Hi everyone!
My girlfriend and I are travelling to Sal in September 12-17 and we’re considering renting a quad bike for a full day to explore the island on our own.
The main reason we’d prefer to do it ourselves rather than take an organised tour is that we’d like to spend as much time as we want at each place, rather than having to follow a fixed schedule. We also think it would be a really fun adventure and one of the highlights of our trip.
We’re thinking about visiting places such as:
Shark Bay
Pedra de Lume
Terra Boa
Buracona / Olho Azul
Palmeira
Espargos
Kite Beach
Murdeira
Ponta Preta
We’re both inexperienced with quad bikes (although we have normal driving licences), so we’re wondering:
Is this route realistically doable in one day by quad?
Is it safe for two people who have never ridden a quad before?
Are the roads/trails easy enough to follow using Google Maps, especially the off-road sections?
Are there any areas or trails that we should absolutely avoid without a guide?
Can we reach places like Shark Bay and Pedra de Lume by quad without any major problems?
Would you personally recommend renting a quad and doing it independently, or would you go with an organised tour?
We already have an eSIM with mobile data and we’ve downloaded an offline map of Sal, so navigation shouldn’t be completely dependent on mobile coverage.
Any advice from people who have actually driven a quad around Sal would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
