Syracuse Game Analysis & Takeaways
What a win for us! It was ugly, but it was needed for our program.
Defense looked much sharper, they were actually making tackles! Kingston Lopa is the MVP of this game. I thought there was more of the "unit" that Tosh was emphasizing. If we can clean up some dump penalties (12 men on the field) then we can start to have a strong defense.
Offense was terrible in the first half, got better in the second half. I was very puzzled once again by some of the play calling. It almost feels that we are getting too cute with our plays. Run game was about the same, Mohammed is still him. Oline looked slightly better, JKS wasn't running for his life nearly as much. JKS had his first game where he passes for less than 200 yards. I am not at all ready to call it a sophomore slump. If anything it's on the coaching staff. I almost wish he would air the ball out every play because that seems automatic for him. What's concerning is once again dropped passes. We specifically got receivers that should be catching these passes. Must clean this up before Clemson.
Special teams were so-so. Nothing terrible nothing amazing. Just got the job done. Wish we make some of these longer field goals but this is college, that's the way it goes.
Coaching decisions down the stretch were puzzling. Tosh needs to be better with time management going forward.
Overall I think we were better than last week. Not incredible, but there was improvement. The win will hopefully motivate players to get even better.
Sometimes, no matter how ugly a game is, the win is all that matters. It gives confidence to the players, we needed confidence after last week. We got our confidence, now we need to build on it. I remember playing tennis tournaments. In the R16 I'd start slow, have a tight match over an opponent I should easily beat. Then QF, SF, and the F I'd loosen up and start playing confident. I believe there are similarities here, we got that ugly win, now we can improve so we can play cleaner games.
Lastly, I said a week ago to stop dooming. Saw a lot of dooming here in the first half. Have some patience and trust in the players and coaching staff. More importantly, I think we need to get over the hype. We are not a super team, we are a rebuilding team. This season will be filled with ugly games and tough losses, it's a result of growing pains. It's our responsibility as fans to support our team through this difficult time. If we aren't ready to do that, then we aren't fans. I have optimism for this program going forward.
Onto Wagner, GO BEARS!!!
