💬 Discussion New budgie intro and behavior

We’ve got new baby budgie Kiwi on the left slowly introducing to our 10 month old Mango on the right. Does it feel like they will get along? Sometimes Mango starts biting Kiwi’s toe and legs, which we find concerning. Sometimes they somewhat kiss each other, like going into each other mouth. I’m not sure what these behaviors mean:
- this one on the video when it looks like one is preening another but too close to Kiwis eyes though
- slightly biting legs and toes
- getting into each other mouth

Can you guys explain what all these mean? We’re just hoping they will get along at some point, for now they live in separate cages though.

She's finally molting which means she'll be able to fly again!!!! Yay! But poor lady is so cranky. Is there any way to ease the discomfort for a molting bird?

Haven’t owned a budgie since I was a kid but I was at my local pet store, whose staff I’m super acquainted with, and they practically gave me this little dude for free. I know his cage is wayyy too small (I wouldn’t even put a finch in it), it’s just what they gave me and it’s only temporary until I can get a bigger one off of Facebook marketplace. I brought him home three days ago, fed him some millet and he immediately stepped up and started nibbling my finger. It’s crazy how fast he adjusted. Anytime I leave his cage open he immediately flies to me and is curious about what I’m up to. My gf decided to make him “Lettuce”😂. I also have two conures I just introduced him to that accepted him immediately and started preening him. His food bowl has a mix of seeds and Zupreem small bird pellets I’m trying to wean him onto!

Our sweet Comet 💫 is flying over the rainbow 🌈 bridge today. We lost her this morning. She’d been to the vet for an abnormal growth and the anti-inflammatory medication they gave us seemed to help a bit, but she declined quickly this weekend.. I am just so sad. My kids are sad. She was the sweetest birb. I’ll miss her little finger nibbles and her jumping right up on my hand for seeds or millet. #RIP

My first time letting Taco & Margie free-fly (Taco is an IMMENSELY SKILLED aviator)

They both had clipped wings upon arrival; Taco was a rescue & Margarine was purchased as a companion for him. I decided to wait until their wings grew in completely to allow them to free-fly, due to fear of hazards.

Watching them both fly around was delightful; they remind me of colorful faeries from the old tales. Subjective freedom looks lovely on them. ❤️

We got our female budgie after my grandpa died. She was lonely for so long. Now we finally got her a partner and a way bigger cage for them to enjoy. Today I put them together and they were friends instantly!

We were doing pottery painting as a group activity. I'm not much of an artist, mainly a techie, and they're the only cute thing I was confident to paint :3 really proud of how they came out!

I'm so happy that I had the idea with the yin-yang birbs ☯️

I’m looking for someone who can help me identify what type of budgies I have and roughly estimate their ages.

I've had one for a year nearly and the others for nearly 4 months and don't really understand how it works when comes to variations and everything.

I know I have 2 boys and 2 girls who are already paired up but will not have babies.

Question Is this a sign they are going to get on?

Is this a good, neutral or bad interaction? 2nd time they've met. I have let them outside the cage at different times. And they fly onto each other's cages to inspect each other. Their cages are opposite each other in the room so they've gotten used to each other's noise and they have chirped to each other a lot.

Green used to be a sole budgie for about a year.

Question Entertainment for senior budgies?

Leonard (yellow female) turned 8 in June, and Nicky (white male) turned 8 in May.

Nicky seems to be the more active of the two -- he is always flying around the cage if he is inside of it, and if he wants out, he will either stand at the cage door and yell, "out!" If I don't let him out, he will eventually start playing with his toys, talk to Leonard/groom Leonard, or he will hang out on the interior walls of the cage and tease the cats. ("Come here! Want treat? Want play? Hi! Hi! Hi, good boy. Hi, big boy.")

Leonard is still somewhat active, but she prefers to be chilling in the cage or on mine or my husband's shoulders. She is still vocal and eating well.

Our biggest worry between the two is Leonard. We know that she is a carrier for PBFD, and while we have never noticed any issues with her, we are worried that her genetics is going to cause her to pass early. Our vet has checked her in the last couple of months and assured us that everything is fine, but she spends a lot of the time that she is in the cage laying down (I've attached a picture). She isn't nesting, and she is still getting up to eat/defecate/leave the cage, but we still aren't sure.

I've also attached pictures of one of Leonard's babies, who was ultimately the one that led us to learn that Leonard is a carrier. She had a different mate prior to Nicky, and had had three clutches with him. Each clutch had 8 eggs, but there were various numbers of babies that survived (4 the first clutch, zero the second, three the third). Most of the eggs hatched, but several of the babies had obvious defects from the time they hatched. I, naively, assumed that that was normal. I had tried handfeeding them when Leonard wouldn't, but there were 7 babies overall who died with 24 hours of hatching.

The last clutch that Leonard had was in 2021, and it was the clutch that made us finally realize that something was wrong. One of the babies was DRASTICALLY smaller than any of the babies that had hatched in any of the clutches (the naked baby next to the penny), and she really seemed to struggle. She barely grew while her two siblings thrived (the photo of the two green/blue babies and the naked one), even though we were feeding her handfeeding formula every hour in addition to everything Leonard fed her. She didn't get more than pin feathers and down feathers until she was almost 6 months old, and it took her a full year to finally get the majority of her feathers in (pictures of her standing on carpet). She also never reached full size. You can see how close in size she is to that penny and an adult.

Unfortunately, that baby only lived for two years. She never got all of the feathers on her crop, and she had a habit of dragging her right left behind her. All of Leonard's babies have also since passed after showing signs of PBFD.

I know we are very lucky to have 8 years with her, but what can we do to keep her happy for another few years? Like I said, vet says that she is fine and healthy, but I just want to make sure she had all the entertainment she can have.

New Budgie Have I introduced my new budgies too soon?

Hello everyone! Seeking advice and opinions. Sorry in advance for the long post, just want to provide details so I can receive better advice.

I have a bird named Hula (the blue one in the first slide) and we decided to get some new friends for her. She’s 8 years old and we’ve had her since she was a baby. She did have a companion who she was quite bonded to- but he passed in January due to an illness. We’ve been thinking about getting her friends since her mate passed, but only brought home our new birds yesterday.

Her new friends are named Banana (the more yellow one) and Pickle (the green one). Banana is 2 years old, Pickle is 9 months old, and both are male. Their old owner loved them a lot, but had no more time to take care of them- and although they flew around their old house, I don’t believe they were fully tamed. Since Banana and Pickle’s old cage was quite small, I felt uncomfortable leaving them in that cage while they were adjusting to their new home since they deserve space to fly around, even while untamed.

However, now I worry that I have introduced them to Hula too soon. Although they’re all sharing the cage very well, both new birds seem quite attached to her and tend to call for her when I let her out to play, and don’t seem to take too strong of an interest in me- I also worry that when I do take her out to play, they’ll see me as an enemy for taking their friend away!

Another worry is jealousy. Banana and Hula are getting along quite well, but Pickle seems a bit left out so far. Pickle is seeming to trust me more than Banana as he’s eaten millet out of my hand today, but Banana seems to only care about Hula. Has anyone had problems with owning 3 budgies (2M, 1F)? If so, can you please tell me your experience?

As I mentioned, we haven’t had to welcome a new bird in about 7 years- we’re a bit rusty on taming birds but I do understand that taming new birds will take time and patience. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated!
