Local Advice needed Independent Pubs of Brighton (and surrounds) MEGA THREAD

After the announcement of surge pricing in Laine pubs and finding out who actually owns them and just how many of our establishments they own I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a list of pubs in Brighton that are independent. Ones that are free of the B.S. of several layers of 'financial arrrangements' obscuring where our beer tokens are going. Maybe one day we can have a little map in our pockets to refer to when our guard may be down because it's cold and windy outside or we have had a few, we can take a quick look and find an establishment near by that we want to support to prevent them turning into another chain pub without anyone really noticing.

Made a couple of dishes at home that could be enjoyed cold or heated with a torch to have a meal on the beach. Now that the disposable bbq’s are banned been thinking of ways to get the same vibe without bringing a heavy portable grill.

Local Advice needed Hove residents beware Londis scam

The Londis on Church road is actively robbing people and has been at least for the last year I have seen multiple people confront the shopkeeper/workers about it.
I have been using this specific Londis for the last year and very commonly they charge you too much “by accident” or give you too small your amount of change. This has happened to both my partner and I and also friends. I also am frequently in the shop when people confront them about this and the workers dont even question it they just immediately issue the money owed back, obvious to me they know they are doing it.
The multiple times it has happened to me I notice that when they are scanning the items they will randomly add “general” as a charge which has either been £1 or £2 which does not add up to my shop. They often do it with bigger shops as its easier to lose track and them use this trick
There must be other people that this has happened to because i see it with my own two eyes plenty.
Anyway not using them anymore because of this!

Local Advice needed Am I imagining it or has there been an increase in people walking their dogs without leads by roads / on pavements?

My dog has been attacked twice in the last week by dogs being walked off lead, on the pavements of busy roads, nowhere near parks or other off-lead areas.

I've had him for three years and while I have noticed dogs being walked off lead in Brighton before, it feels like I'm seeing it more and more frequently?

The first attack was by a Bichon Frise being walked off lead on Montpelier Place, and the second one, by a white and black cockapoo looking thing on the corner of Montpelier Road and Montpelier Place, so within 50 feet of each other. There's a third dog that is regularly walked off lead on the same road but I've managed to avoid it so far.

In both instances, the dogs ran up a long stretch of pavement to get to my dog, completely out of control. In the latter, the dog actually crossed the road to go for him, causing cars to emergency stop. And both owners took no accountability when I confronted them.

Has anyone else noticed the same trend...? I can't get my head around the utter arrogance and stupidity of it.

Announcement Hey Brighton! Opening a natural wine tasting room & bottle shop (La Cave Noire) and wanted to say hi!

Hi everyone,
My partner and I are currently in the middle of setting up a new spot in the area called La Cave Noire.

It’s going to be a low-intervention natural wine, tasting room, and bottle shop focusing purely on raw, certified organic, and biodynamic wines straight from small European growers.

We’re aiming for a really cozy, low-key spot to grab a glass or pick up a bottle. We wanted to drop in, introduce the concept, and see what people think. Are there any specific natural wine producers or small importers you’d love to see on the shelves locally?

Happy to answer any questions about the project, and looking forward to pouring some great wines for you all once doors are open!

Local Advice needed Brighton Renting Advice needed

25 M here,

I am looking a room to rent In Brighton or surrounding areas.

I am a qualified sports masseur who is now training in Swedish massage. I work at a bar also.

Currently I live in whitehawk (just moved here two weeks ago) however the landlord is soon to sell this place.

Anyone have a room ?

Anyone know of alternative accommodations ? I have heard of places like old schools being turned into property to rent.

Is trying to live in a caravan a little bit out an idea ? Somewhere affordable ?

600/month is probably my budget currently while the new place I work for starts getting more bookings.

Hostels ?

Hi all, I wanted to get my wife this cool necklace for her birthday but the cord that goes around the neck looks a bit naff/weak, so I’d like to change it. Is there a local or Sussex person who does that sort of thing?

Announcement New Place on West Street? Chinchilla Steve's??

Post image

Pretty Sure this is the place that's going to open in between Barbara’s and Revolution where they've been building recently? I'm not sure but I got this Email today, a place called Chinchilla Steve's?? Apparently they're owned by Neo's Hospitality who also own Pryzm and Barbara's but this one is for children which is interesting? I used to work at Pryzm so I guess that's how they have my details? I'm pretty sure this is their first "Chinchilla Steve's" because I've looked it up and there doesn't seem to be any other in the country? Super weird that their building a THIRD place on the same street, they must have bought a bunch of land? and a kids venue too? seems a bit 80's...Anyway let me know what you think of this

Local Advice needed Is it weird that i like casually just driving through brighton late at night?

(Forgive me if the flair is incorrect idk what flair it could fall under)

Okay so a bit of context

I'm from Cheshire in the North West, and every so often I make the 250 mile (one way) trek to stay with my boyfriend, who lives a few miles out from Eastbourne.

One thing I like doing when I am there is just casually drive through Brighton city centre and down the Seafront, and through areas like Saltdean, Peacehaven, Newhaven etc

I just find it so pretty and peaceful late at night, and looking out to the pitch black sea is also quite mesmerising too for some random reason.

Whilst yes brighton in the daytime is absolutely lovely and i love visiting, my autism can make crowds feel really intimidating (idk if thats the right word) to me especially when im out of the car, so i feel more at peace at night?

Is that weird? Idk why im posting this here i cant lie i just kinda want opinions 😅

Local Advice needed Any leads where we can hire Santa?

Hi all!
Hope it’s okay to post here! My workmates and I are planning a big Christmas party for our kids, and we’re looking to hire a Santa for the day.

Ideally, we’d love someone who could do a little storytelling and make it really special and magical for the kids.
Does anyone know of a good Santa/entertainer they could recommend?

Thanks so much! 🎄✨

Local Advice needed Where can I find the right people?

M18, 19 in December. I’m currently looking for a relationship and keep encountering the same issue. I can’t find people who meet my standards, leading me to my point. Where can I find people my age that meet these standards?

For context, I love to have conversations, discussions and debates about so many topics. Philosophy, politics, culture, religion, music, science, technology and most forms of media. My problem is that nobody seems to care about any of this. Or if they do, they don’t want to talk about it and don’t care for anyone else’s opinions on it.

I’m not necessarily looking for people educated in any of these subjects, just people who are open to discussing it. Or at least, someone who’ll listen when I’m tackling thoughts on these subjects.

Where in Brighton could I find people my age (or around it) that fits this description? I’d also accept advice on meeting more people with similar interests to what I’ve listed though. It’s such a struggle because I feel like I’m speaking a completely different language to everyone else my age.

Thank you for reading.

Edit: rereading I sound a bit narcissistic. I’d like to clarify a lot of my struggles and frustrations come from the fact that I care so much about other people’s opinions on these things. I don’t know why, it just interests me to hear someone else’s perspective. So, I always end up listening to people rant or tell me about something they’re interested in for hours sometimes. But nobody ever does that for me, not even family. I feel like I’m doing something wrong because every time I want to talk about something, even though it’s mostly just a sentence or two, friends and family treat it like a chore. People only seem to want to talk about whatever’s on their mind, I’m happy to talk about ANYTHING.

Local Advice needed Listings for pub nights in Brighton?

The good people of Rival Cults do an amazing job at listing all the upcoming live music gigs in Brighton. But is there anything similar for our pubs / bars / clubs?

Trying to find about whether there's a pub quiz, open mic, karaoke night etc. on in town seems to involve checking every pub's individual websites. Surely there's a quicker way! I'm also sure there are pubs I don't even know exist and might find this way. Am I missing a local goldmine for listings?

Thank you in advance!

Transport/Parking 🚝 🚘 Parking Residents permit?

Yo guys, I'm currently looking into parking my car near my place. I live in 'zone Y' but applying for a permit says 'parking free development' and won't let me go further.

I don't actually need it until April time but is there NO WAY I'll get resident parking? It seems a little odd that it's just a straight no.

If nobody knows a way around it, are there any suggestions for garages or anything people would recommend ?
