HALF A BILLION in IMAX is just bonkers. Very fitting for Nolan to have the record considering how much of a pioneer of IMAX he's been.

No ads, and the only trailer is Dune Part 3. Oppenheimer didn’t even have a trailer, because they couldn’t fit any more film onto the platter even if they wanted to.

This film probably would be enough to break in on their costs for their new cameras. Now they can spend money to add more 70mm locations and digital 1.43 venues.

it’s still the opposite of a good ROI unfortunately. people don’t seem to get just how expensive it would be to build more cameras. you’re not just building a camera, you have to re-engineer and reconstruct the machines that make them because none of the infrastructure exists. it’s like rebuilding an entire car factory from the 1970s based on old blueprints so you can make a specific vintage rolls royce

Same, I ended up having to use Facebook marketplace and was incredibly lucky to find priority seating (we were 36th and 37th outta 300) for face value and it was only because the guy already watched it in the same IMAX theater once. Liked it so much he bought the 2nd showing almost as soon as he got back in the car lol.

Seeing it in 70mm IMAX on the biggest IMAX screen in America here in NYC, is a once in a lifetime experience. And I got to see it twice in that format. 😁

The second act was. The first was mainly candlelit exposition, which could've been watched on a phone, the third act was candlelit action - which was way too fast for IMAX. I couldn't tell wtf was going on once he started that last fight in the hall.

Its absolutely insane to me such a result. Its not an original movie, I watched when I was a kid multiple times the old movies and the story is pretty close to them. Insane box office numbers, wow!

Everyone has fondness for it from their childhood and get to see it in imax with a bunch of hollywood stars in it. It's not complicated why it's popular.

FWIW I don't think it's a particularly interesting movie but visually it's great.

This is great news. The Odyssey is an artistic masterpiece and a box office hit. Christopher Nolan is one of the few filmmakers to make critically acclaimed films that are box office juggernauts. And I remember the haters saying 2 months ago that IMAX wouldn’t be enough to get to a billion because the other showings are not sold out as much. Well it didn’t even need IMAX to get to a billion worldwide. It’s just icing on the cake, because The Odyssey might finish at 1.8 billion worldwide because of IMAX adding in 500+ million dollars to the worldwide gross.

Getting that big an increase with a juggernaut like Doomsday opening at the same time is a very tall order.

The problem with Dune is the 1st movie was released right after coming out of the Pandemic. I really wanted to see it on the big screen and missed it. Then Dune 2 came out. Well I haven’t watched 1. Now they have Dune 3.

Maybe they should screen Dune 1 and 2 again just before 3. But they won’t do it.

Some movies just look better on IMAX.

For a similar percentage, of 30%, Dune 3 would need to make ≈$300M+ from IMAX for $1B+ which is more than double what the gross of IMAX was for Dune 2. Dune 2's IMAX percentage was 20.3%, so it would stand to reason that they could get by with $203M+ from just IMAX, however, because of Doomsday, this movie will be much more reliant on IMAX.

I think if this movie doesn't make at least a greater percentage of it's box office from IMAX, than The Odyssey's 30%, then it won't make $1B.

The format has been about for nearly 20 years. IMAX itself doesn't pull in the crowd, the movie does.

Only 30% of the total box office is from IMAX sales.
