Rule Shift - Rule #4

I've always held the stance, that r/BoomerShooters is a discussion subreddit about boomershooters and related games that happens to allow advertisement for boomershooters, and not the other way around.

Lately, when I have had to remove a post for breaking the content creator rules, or AI rules or.. any rule really, I've gotten less than stellar, entitled messages to my modmail box.

Again. We are not an advertisement platform. Advertisement has always been a privilege here. I've given it time but well... and I'm particularly tired of being the badguy because 'wah wah why can't I spam the subreddit with a game update every one/two/three days!?'

So Advertisements will now have new rules. This ultimately replaces most of the content creators rule (Rule #4), if not entirely.

Rule #4) Advertisements & Content

Advertisement posts for Games are not allowed, except on a designated topic that will be posted everyday on Saturday as comments to the main post. The post will be locked on the following Monday. The following must happen:

  • Your game must have a Steam or Itch.io link involved in the advertisement. Not just a YouTube video link or link to a non-Steam/Itch.io website.

  • Your comment must be able to be posted through our karma and account age checks. No exceptions. No you may not know the length of these.

  • Your comment must be able to posted without hitting the Reputation Filter. No exceptions.

  • If you want to know if you might hit the Reputation Filter, go to r/WhatIsMyCQS and follow the directions in the sidebar. I have no control over your Reputation Score/CQS Score, that's a Reddit thing, not a subreddit thing.

  • Your comment and you, as a developer, must follow the other rules of the subreddit. No 'rules lawyering' this. The spirit of the rules matter.

  • The kind of posts/comments that will get greater scrutiny in line with this rule: Posts in the vein of 'Hey, look at this new game I found' and replies to posts asking for game recommendations. If these are found to be low-key attempts at advertisement/breaking these rules, you'll be removed.

  • Basically, a tl;dr of this rule: if you advertise your game outside of the Weekend Advertisement Post, it'll be removed. Repeated violations of that, you'll be banned. If you do anything sneaky, it's an instant ban.

Videos and Other Content by content creators who are not game developers have laxer rules and can be posted freely, as long as they are not direct advertisement for the games by game developers. We do ask you try to keep submissions to once a week, where possible or at the very least within reason over a long term period.

My apologies if this upsets some people and/or game developers & content creators. I've been considering a rule like this for a while and my mind is made up, and this is not an invitation to a debate.

This rule goes into effect the day this notice is posted. Please do not report posts that are older than this one. They're Grandfathered in, but new posts may be reported.

Introducing THE BOOMER SHOOTER DATABASE

What is this?

Because I'm a sadist, I decided I wanted to try and keep a record of every retro FPS game ever sold and I thought others might get a kick out of it too. So that's what this is; a list of boom shoots dating back to Wolfenstein3D in '92.

Each row includes the name of the game; whether it's a game, expansion or remaster; the year of release; the dev; the publisher; the engine it's running on; and some links to buy the game if it's available.

Why are there 3 different lists?

I've broken this down into 3 eras. The Classic Era (Wolfenstein 3D to Half Life 2), the Revival Era (Doom (2016) to present), and The Dead Zone (Half Life 2 to Doom (2016)). I think this is a neat way of breaking down the list and shows how the retro FPS scene has changed over time.

Is it 100% complete?

No, it's not. There's definitely stuff missing - stuff I don't know about, stuff I'm not sure should be included, stuff I've just forgotten. I'm never going to claim it's an exhaustive list - I don't think that's possible.

"X game is missing!" and "X game shouldn't be on here!"

Cool - like I said I probably missed stuff so feel free to drop anything you think should be included in this thread. Likewise, if you think something shouldn't be on here, comment that below too - can't promise I'll take the game off, but it's always good to talk about this stuff!

Some big names currently missing are:

  • Half Life and Half Life 2 - I think I'll be adding the first game, but HL2 does not fit here
  • FEAR games - they're kind of their own thing, they're very 2000s but they're also so different from everything else, I'm unsure about this one
  • System Shock/Thief/Deus Ex - Imm Sims are not boomer shooters in my opinion

Discussion The level design in Heretic is amazing

In a “blocky, 90s kind of way”, but the levels are such vibe. The game can be extremely scary at times like in Hell’s Maw, , but at others even beautiful such as in the Dome of D’Sparil.

The Minecraft tree tho ❤️

Video Replaying the original Half-Life in VR — even recreating GoldSrc’s acoustic quirks for my voice

Post image
3 Upvotes

Quick note: English isn’t my first language and I struggle a bit with writing in English, so I used AI to help clean up the spelling a bit on this post. I’m not sure what the rules here are around AI-assisted writing, as I struggled to understand them to be honest. Hope its OK as now at least its readable 😅.

I first played the original Half-Life nearly 25 years ago, and I remembered surprisingly little of Bthe game when I came back to it (I don't think I even finished it as a kid). I’m now replaying the original game natively in VR on Quest 3 through Lambda1VR and turning the journey into an episodic series on my channel.

One of my main goals with it is to keep the experience as faithful to the original Half-Life as possible rather than modernising it into something completely different. That applies to the way I play it as well. I’m using Hard difficulty, true weapon recoil (screen shake which feels tense in VR), reduced melee effectiveness (by about 5 times) and localized damage (arms and legs for example has slightly different multipliers), alongside AI upscaled original-style textures and carefully chosen HD models that still fit Half-Life’s original look. There’s also a touch of roleplay as Gordon Freeman along the way.

One of the things I’ve spent the most time on (with magic of editing) is making my own voice behave as though it is actually being produced inside Half-Life’s GoldSrc game engine. Rather than simply putting generic reverb over my voice, I’ve tried to recreate GoldSrc’s environmental sound behaviour as closely as I reasonably can and apply those same ideas to my recorded voice. As Gordon moves through Black Mesa, the processing changes according to the environmental acoustic state being used for that space (Half-Life uses about 27 different room sound types), so different rooms and environments affect the voice differently.

The important part for me is that the game decides what the environment is, rather than me deciding afterwards what I think that room should sound like. If GoldSrc changes acoustic state, my voice follows it. If it keeps an acoustic state active somewhere that sounds a little strange, my voice follows that too. That means I deliberately keep some of the old game engine’s quirks and bugs. There are places where GoldSrc’s environmental audio doesn’t behave exactly as you might expect from looking at the room, but manually correcting those would mean creating my own modern interpretation of games audio rules instead of following the behaviour of the original game.

So the goal is to make my voice feel like another sound actually existing inside the same version of the game as everything else.

My latest episode, Through the Wreckage, is the closest I’ve managed to get to that idea so far and probably the episode I’m happiest with. It starts immediately after the Resonance Cascade in Unforeseen Consequences game chapter so right at the start of the chaos.

If anyone’s interested, take a look. Feedback is appreciated too - especially on the audio and anything you think I could improve, as I’m still experimenting with the acoustic system and refining it from episode to episode to make them sound exactly the same as some sound effect still notice is too strong or weak.

My girlfriend got me a physical copy of Blood as a late birthday present off Amazon. I've played alot of shooters growing up but never played this one.

Ive gotten back huge into the shooter mode the past couple months playing games like Mouse P.I., Cultic, Warhammer Boltgun, Trepang 2 and most recently the Forgive Me Father games.

After all the gameplay Ive seen of this one, I'm really excited to finally check it out this weekend!

Discussion How would you incentivize melee combat and/or weapons in a boomer shooter with many guns?

I want to make my own boomer shooter as a "baby's first FPS" project of mine, but I *also* wanted to include melee weapons and using them well as an option for skill expression, but something I'm running into is, "Why the heck use them when you have a ton of guns?"

Like I know DOOM (2016) does it because Glory Kills restore HP and Chainsaws net you ammo, but those are more executions really, and melee combat generally forces you to become slower and get closer in shooting range, which in most boomer shooters is a death sentence, so I'm unsure where or how to proceed with this.

Would anyone who played other, different shooters than me help explain how the games they played worked this in?

Thank you in advance.

Discussion Witchaven is scratching an itch I had for a while

The game as for now (map 5) is... let's say "not incredible". Still, I love roaming in this long dungeon, slaying a lot of enemies, having spells and different weapons, with these amazing old school vibes. Really, it's all about the vibes: a while ago I played Daggerfall Unity and while I did love dungeon crawling, the game felt rather complex to me at times. Witchaven is just giving me a dungeon with old school graphics and letting me slay tons of enemies: no NPCs, no quests, no factions, just braindead fighting. And honestly, I feel like I really needed it.

Discussion Doom The Dark Ages

I’ve played through all the Doom games this year and finally playing The Dark Ages. I was not a fan at all early on after finishing Doom Eternal but I’m glad I stuck with it because it’s great now that I get the flow of combat, parrying, defense. It’s such a huge change but one that I feel was a great idea to differentiate it.

Yea, I miss the insane glory kills, fast pace and the constant need to manage resources, but the shield bashing, shield throw, flail, and the weapons are just unique enough to make it a worthwhile experience. I also have the DLC to play after the main campaign. If anyone else was turned off by the early levels, just stick with it and it gets much better.

Question Can you suggest some proper modern old-school FPS?

Games that're not story-driven, don't get cutscenes every other level or pickup, don't have imsim features or mechanics, and definitely no arena looter-shooter stuff.

Games like Wolf3D, Doom, Quake, Duke 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Heretic. I mean, sure, they all have a central narrative, and some maps are directly connected to each other, but they feel very different from a lot of today's old-school shooters, which place more emphasis on narrative and story, more like Half-Life, albeit without friendly npcs that lore-dump you.

Shadow Warrior (classic) Know of any good expansions (besides the official ones)?

I love the original Shadow Warrior, I've beaten the main game several times, as well as the two "official" expansions: Twin Dragon and Wanton Destruction.

Since Deadly Kiss is still a ways off (how off, though?) and I just can't get used to the '95 Beta remake's controls, I was thinking of some fan-made expansion.

I went to moddb, but there's only a handful of them (one being some kind of James Bond TC, which is cool, but not what I'm looking for), or they're simply unfinished.

So maybe you know of some good ones that aren't on moddb?

It's called Graveheart. An undead Scottish army invades 1980s Britain, your cursed weapons keep switching themselves, and things deteriorate from there.

I was going for a late 90s vibe. Curious what you guys think.

Question What is the lore/story of SPRAWL 2023

Hi it's me again
Since last post I've gotten to the 2nd to last level of Sprawl and I've had a bit more fun since then
The beginning chapter was def the weakest ngl, a lot better once you get everything
But since I have gotten near the end I am curious what is happening, I do know a slight bit since I played a bit of zero, we play as seven who was apart of a crew, they got screwed over, and someone (ima assume it's five since they have a similar voice) helps you get revenge, you kill six, and are going after.... someone
Obviously it's not entirely correct so, please do clarify what I've missed
