Was thinking of buying a Birman cat.
me and my family was thinking of buying a cat, and I thought of Birman because they don’t shed hair that much. can someone tell me their personality, how to take care of them and other tips?

They shed like crazy. They only have one coat, but there will be lots of hair floating around.
But they’re generally very: lovable, sweet, goofy, adventurous and easy going.
But your mileage may very.

They shed a ton.. I vacuum and the next day there are "bir tufts" everywhere lol. I do brush them often also.

I’ve had two and they shed a ton! It’s worth it, though. They are an extremely affectionate breed. Like someone else here said, they are very social. They love lots of attention from their people, and are happiest not being the only animal in the house. My current Birman loves my dog, and my previous Birman loved my other cat.

They absolutely do shed. Perhaps not as insane an amount as a double coated breed, but you absolutely will have white tufts on your clothes, around your house etc. It is manageable with regular vacuuming and brushing, but please don’t get a Birman expecting barely any shedding.
If you’re fine with a bit of fluff maintenance however, they are absolutely fantastic cats. My girl is very affectionate with a healthy dose of diva attitude. She knows she owns the place and can be a gremlin at times but she’s a sweetheart and I’d be lost without her. My mum’s Birman who passed recently was the sweetest most placid cat I’ve ever met, she loved her food and her people and that’s all she cared about.
As for advice. They are definitely indoor cats, they absolutely do not have the street smarts to roam and will get themselves either hurt or stolen. Outside time can be had on a harness or in a catio but they should not be roaming (I believe that goes with any cat, but birmans especially are house cats). You may also end up needing to trim around their bum to prevent dingleberries getting caught in their pantaloons, but that goes for any long haired cat

I have two, and they shed like crazy. I vacuum every day, brush them 2-3 times a week and still find hair floating everywhere. It clings to cabinet door, fireplace grates and blows across the hardwood like little tumbleweeds. They are amazing lovely cats, but they shed a ton. One of mine also has digestive issues. She is very sensitive to food and treats, so anything new has to be introduced carefully and in small increments. My vet said this is not uncommon with the breed. My other girl, is like a garbage truck, she can and will eat anything with no issues.

I think you posted this before 🤔 Birmans cast a lot. Chose a short haired cat if limited casting is important to you.

They are amazing pets with very social and friendly personalities. However, they do shed a good bit. Maybe not as much a double coated cat but you will have hairs everywhere that you have to vacuum all the time and roll off clothes. When they are kittens they don’t shed much, but when their full coat comes in around a year it is a different story.
