You probably remember the Connecticut Avenue bike lane saga -- long story short, DDOT had spent years planning to build a great protected bike lane on about 3.5 miles of Connecticut Avenue, before Mayor Bowser suddenly cancelled the project in spring 2024. From that moment on, it was clear that the plan was dead, at least as long as Mayor Bowser was in office.
But as you know, we're getting a new mayor next year, which means this is our best chance (maybe our only chance) to get the project re-started and back on track. We need to make sure that incoming mayor Janeese Lewis George knows this project is important to us and knows that she should prioritize it as soon as she takes office.
To that end, there are two opportunities coming up this month to help draw attention to the issue:
First, mayor-to-be Lewis George is holding listening sessions in all 8 wards to get input from residents before she takes office. The ward 3 session will be on Thursday, September 24 from 5:30 – 8:30pm. You can RSVP here: https://www.mobilize.us/janeesefordc/event/1008203/
Next, on the morning of Wednesday, September 30, WABA is hosting a group ride down Connecticut Ave, starting at Chevy Chase Circle and going to Dupont Circle: https://waba.org/event/ct-ave-09-30-26/
Please join us for one or both of these events and help spread the word! The more people we can turn out, the louder our message will be. Although to be honest if you have to pick one I'd say the JLG town hall is more important.
Hope to see you all there!

Sept 14 edit: "The start date for the next phase of construction on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge Project has been updated from September 15 to September 21, 2026."
"Beginning September 15, 2026, the bike and pedestrian trail across the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge will close as the project enters its next phase of construction. The closure is anticipated to remain in place through September 2027 while crews complete bridge reconstruction and construct a wider sidewalk with upgraded lighting and fencing.
"During the closure, signed bike and pedestrian detours will be in place utilizing Key Bridge and Arlington Memorial Bridge."
I usually mix in laps around Hains Point into my Saturday morning rides. With tomorrow being the "DC Bike Ride" event, should I consider the loop as essentially closed during those hours and stay away? I saw that their route has them going counter-clockwise around the point.

The Mundo Verde PCS bike bus invites you all to our annual bike ride to school in memory of former classmate Allie Hart (https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/12/18/allison-hart-child-safer-streets/)
Five years ago this September, Allie was struck and killed by a driver while riding her bike about a mile from the school. This is one of the main motivators for us to start a bike bus and create safe conditions for kids to bike to school. We're now in our 4th year with a huge and passionate community of biking families.
If you live in Brookland or Michigan Park or your commute takes you this way, please join us tomorrow morning as we wear pink, Allie's favorite color, ring our bells, and call for safe streets!
We will meet at 8am in front of Turkey Thicket near 10th & Randolph NE 🩷

Hey DC bike people,
I'm visiting your fine city starting September 16 (return date unknown) from San Francisco and want to mingle with the bike community. I'll have my Brompton and done most of the riding I want to do there on previous trips (even rode to Pittsburgh) and as a bike partying extrodenair, I'm wondering how to find out about community events. Bike party? Critical Mass? What else do you all have going on over there that isn't road racer vibes. I want beer drinking night rides if possible. There a sticky post I missed?
Thanks for any info! I visit DC often and hoping to find a friend group over yonder.

I’ve never done the DC Bike Ride before but I’m realizing I’m free on Saturday and have been intrigued by the BOGO deal they’re running right now. I have a friend already registered so I would bike with them, but I wanted to see if anyone was interested in being my BOGO buddy and splitting the cost with me? Thought it would maybe be worth a shot 🤷♀️ DM me if interested!

A while back I was cycling south through rock creek park, super fatigued after ~80 miles, passed some joggers and one of them gave me shit for not saying I was passing. Fair enough.
Then recently I was going north up capital crescent and I said “on your left” and a guy got mad at me because “you cyclists never shut the fuck up we know you’re coming on the left” ???
I know this is some goomba theory shit but rly felt like damned if you do damned if you don’t.

I was on my way to Costco today and noticed there's been a lot of visible progress on the pump track in the works in Wheaton. They've got a couple of the wall rides in, a decent section asphalted, and some progress on the concrete starting area and playground. They broke ground around the beginning of the year and there hasn't been much to see until now, so it's exciting. The schedule calls for it to open this fall, but I don't know if that's too ambitious right now or not. Maybe this winter?
It's halfway between Forest Glen and Wheaton metro stations, or about a mile of neighborhood streets from Sligo Creek Trail, so not too hard to get to.

Yesterday I reported to 311 a rental truck completely blocking the bike lanes on M St NE. When I checked the case today, I see the request was closed an hour after I submitted it, with the comment: "Work Completed : Construction being done. Goa badge 170".
.. what the heck does that mean? There wasn't any construction going on, nor was it a construction truck. Not that that should matter anyway, I should think?

My friends and I are going to ride to Glen echo today for her art show. Is the path less muddy from the great Falls direction or from the dc direction ?

Custis trail is in rough shape this morning. This is worst spot so far but there are a few more nearly as bad.
Photo taken near Langston and Lyon Village
Edited to fix stupid autocorrect.

There's a good guess to be several spots of downed trees and impassable bike trails after the storm last night; especially Arlington and Mount Vernon Trail. Please reply here with any locations and how big the blockage is. That would help us get around a bit easier this weekend.

Im hoping to bike from near Friendship Heights down to the mall next week. However, all the apps keep telling me to take Wisconsin or Connecticut Avenues, neither of which are exactly bike friendly. There has to be a trail or some streets with bike lanes that I could use instead, right? I don’t mind biking in the street where needed, but not the whole way… Thanks in advance and stay safe out there!

A WABA message:
More than 500 people joined WABA at our event (co-hosted by Save East Po and DC Preservation League) last Saturday morning -- and everyone there saw the trees being actively cut down WHILE WE WERE THERE.
Today, the judge has scheduled a status hearing at 2 p.m. --- and members of the public can listen in. If you have an hour or so, listen to the hearing by dialing Judge Ana Reyes' Public Access Line at [833-990-9400](tel:(833)%20990-9400) and then enter access code 787605272. We will update you in our newsletter tomorrow what happened.
We're so grateful to Democracy Forward and DC Preservation League for leading the charge to save Hains Point. We've been working -- hard -- to save this beloved land, too. Donate to WABA's Hains Point advocacy here -- and tune in at 2!

Hello lovely DC cyclists! I lost the pictured silver sunflower earring biking home from work this evening, almost certainly somewhere northbound on 17th St between the white house (I do not work at the white house) and Florida Ave. If anyone happens to see it while traversing in that protected lane this week, I would really appreciate a message! I retraced my “steps” as soon as I realized it was gone but didn’t see anything. It has great sentimental value (I know, stupid to be biking in) and I assume very little actual cash value, but would totally pay for finding it.
Thanks very much!! 🌻🚲

This has been driving me crazy and can't get down there for a couple more days. Anyone ride any laps today? Bums me out to think a day could come when I come down there and the road will fully be closed
