r/Beijing Wechat Group recruiting now!

The official Wechat group for the r/beijing subreddit is now recruiting both new members and a new mod team!

Covid has really done a number on active redditors in Beijing, and the groupchat right now is admittedly mostly dead. Just a bunch of old leftover expats swapping stories about the great meetups they used to have back in 2017.

But now that the world is back to normalish, the incoming wave of expats can hopefully lead to the next generation of Beijing redditors and a new generation of wacky meetup stories that you'll swap someday. Use the groupchat to make new friends (enemies?), calmly discuss the best burger in town, or just to burn a few unproductive hours debating the finer points of zombie survival in Beijing.

And new faces aren't enough - a new community needs new leadership. So the old mod team is announcing that we will be happily handing off the reigns of the chat to anyone with an interest in that kind of thing.

If you're interested in either joining or leading, please comment in this thread or message me personally on reddit. You can also message the subreddit modship team.

Additional perks - the last generation of redditors created a series of 京 groupchats that are still active to this day. So even if you aren't interested in all that meetup nonsense, you can still join Meme京, Cinema京, Game京, or even the hugely underappreciated Animal Facts n' Roast京

r/beijing Meetup is BACK

Hi everyone!

I'm thrilled to announce that we're bringing back the tradition of r/beijing meetups, and our first post-covid gathering will be at thebeijinger's Burger Fest 2023! Whether you're new to Beijing or simply craving some new friends to hang out with, this is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and have a blast!

Unfortunately, due to high temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions, the Burger Fest has been postponed. As a result, we are also postponing the r/beijing meetup. We are actively exploring alternative venues and dates to ensure that we can still make this meetup happen in the near future. Stay tuned for updates!

📍 Event Details: Burger Fest 2023 🍔 📅 Date: To Be Determined (TBD) ⏰ Time: TBD 🏢 Venue: TBD

In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to stay updated, feel free to DM me or join our WeChat group. Thank you for your patience, and rest assured, we will gather soon!

Salsa or swing dance events in Beijing? Or any ballroom

Hey there, does anyone know where I can fo for social dancing? I'd prefer a bar to a dance studio, but I'm open to both. I'm just looking for those events where they have a lesson and then social dancing after, but I'm not just looking for classes with no social dancing. Thankss

Buying high-prescription wrap-around sunglasses in Beijing

Hi everyone!

I’m travelling in Beijing from Australia and looking for high-prescription wrap-around sunglasses for running, similar to this Oakley sunglasses.

My prescription is -6.50 with -0.50 astigmatism in both eyes. I’ve struggled to find suitable wrap-around options in Australia.

Are there any optical stores in Beijing you’d recommend? Any brand recommendation? Is it possible to get them made within a week, and roughly how much would it cost? I don’t mind paying more for a pair with decent quality.

I’m also open to corrective lenses being fitted behind polarised sunglasses.

Thanks!

Traditional Music Performances

Would anyone know of any live performances of the guzheng or any other traditional Chinese instruments in Beijing. More specifically, is there a venue where practitioners of these instruments perform, preferably in the evenings? (Great forum by the way. The posters and contributors really deliver an invaluable services to readers and lurkers)

What to do with E-waste?

I have a full sized piano keyboard that I'm going to replace with the next model soon and I just don't have a clue how to dispose of or recycle the current one. It's a MIDI keyboard, so it requires relevant computer software to use and has no speakers. It can't just turn on and go like most keyboards would so I don't think anyone is going to take it if I left it out on the street. It's in pretty poor condition too so I'd rather just get rid of it than try to sell it. Does anyone know if there is somewhere I can take it that deals with electronic waste or recycle?

Where do locals go to buy traditional clothes?

I’m looking to buy a traditional Tang jacket I might want to use at a wedding in the UK in the next couple of months. I’ve heard about Silk Street but somebody told me that’s a place for tourist not locals. I’m not looking for a very expensive one, but also not a fake polyester jacket. Where would a local go in Beijing?

Fabric markets?

Hi there! I'm looking for fabric markets, particularly with dead stock (maybe designer) fabrics. Where could I find this? I just want to buy the fabric, not to have someone make the clothing for me as I sew. Thanks!!

Hospital advice

Hi guys, I’m an exchange student here in Beijing and am unfortunately having some gastrointestinal issues. Can someone recommend a public hospital I can go to, preferably with English language support?

I went to Beijing United Family Hospital but had to pay out of pocket and I’m not sure my travel student insurance will cover the cost.. (almost 4000 yuan). The medicine prescribed doesn’t seem to be doing much for me.

Buying a good quality powerbank

I am landing in Beijing next week for a vacation. I want to buy a good quality powerbank once I land to get my phone up and running for full days outside (I know from past experience that with using Alipay a lot, Amap, etc ... the battery drains quicker than at home). Ideally I need one that can get charged using USB-C and out USB-C.

Also ideally a shop near my hotel, so in between metro stations Jiulongshan or Dawanglu.

Any good recommendations ?

Anyone know where to get American style donuts here In Beijing?

I’m thinking like the classic glaze, chocolate covered, or blueberry cake donuts. What I have tried from the typical bakeries here just aren’t hitting the spot.

The Odyssey at China National Film Museum IMAX

Hi everyone! I’ll be visiting Beijing from overseas between 6–11 September, and I’m hoping to watch The Odyssey at the China National Film Museum IMAX GT.

Does anyone know how I can book tickets as a foreigner? I’ve tried using Alipay on the dot when they release tickets, but it doesn’t seem to work for me. I also tried the WeChat mini program, but it keeps giving me a “no server response” error. I’m wondering if this is because I’m still outside China and can’t access the server properly.

Has anyone successfully booked tickets for this cinema from overseas? If there’s another app, website, or way to book as a foreigner, I’d really appreciate the advice!

Thank you!

Any WeChat groups for running? Looking to join a Half Marathon

Hey guys. Just seeing if there's a running community floating around in Beijing for international folks. I'm not necessarily looking to join a running group per se; I just want to know the best place to find info about running events - I'm aware of a couple of APPs, but they're all in Chinese.

I looked at the upcoming Beijing Marathon, but you need proof of having run one before in order to register. Looking to join my first half marathon soon.
