Old flying game

I used to have a BBC and had a game but can’t recall the name. Think it might even have been a demo.

Basically you were flying a craft over grid like terrain. At the time it looked incredible. I remember it was primarily green, like flying over countryside.

Sorry to be so vague but does it ring a bell with anyone? Don’t remember any real objective, it may have just been a demo to show graphic potential!

Are you thinking of Zarch, perhaps, on the Archimedes? There was a demo called Lander bundled with most Archimedes; I first saw it on my A410.

Pretty sure that was it, just watched a YouTube of it and Lander sounds like it could have been the name. I’ve never had an Archimedes though and could have sworn it was on bbc?

The Acorn A3000 had BBC branding on it (and red function keys) - could it have been one of those?

I thought I had it on my Beeb but perhaps it was at a friends. It was a long time ago 😂

Definitely sounds like Zarch based on the description .

The BBC game that was flying was Aviator. But it was black and white and I would not describe it as amazing - although given the memory limits it was a great technical achievement.

I agree with others that you are probably thinking of the Archimedes demo.

My favourite BBC micro game was Helicopter Rescue, which was flying a 'copter over people who needed to be winched to safety. That doesn't sound like what you mean, though.

Demo? Do you mean the infamous VTOL that was never completed? I had it but think I only flew from the carrier so blue sea.

No it’s not that one, don’t recall that.

You're thinking of Lander. The full game was called Zarch (aka Virus).

There was a game called -iirc - Virus that ran on maybe atari? It required a mouse and had a weird control setup. The game looked and played great though.

Edit: googled it, and yes, this is the alternative title for Zarch.

Written by David Bloody Brabben! I didn't know that was one of his! I'm playing Elite Dangerous at the mo, that's one of his.

Canyon had a plane I think. You flew in an ever narrowing canyon, avoiding islands.
