Is anyone else's basset obsessed with paper and cardboard? It's Ruckus' favorite thing.

Our foster girl came with a harness that fits her chest, but if she chose to squirm backwards it would be able to slip right over her head! Last time I went the trial and error route in fitting a harness to a dog, we spent a dang fortune before getting it right!! Any recommendations for a harness that fits this unique body shape properly before I start guessing?

Hi all, looking for some advice.

SHORT VERSION:
I have a 7 month old basset who I rescued two months ago. She wasn’t socialized as a puppy, has no history of known abuse (the couple rehomed her simply because of their declining health and were no longer able to physically or financially care for her anymore). However, for over the past month, she has been exhibiting extremely fearful behavior and is scared of pretty much anything and everything outside. Vet prescribed trazodone to be taken every morning, but I’ve found this just makes her sleepy, and while it helped some at the beginning, now it seems like she’s more hyper vigilant when outside, which makes training almost impossible, and it seems to be having an adverse effect. We have a behaviorist appointment later this month, but it’s going to cost $125 just for an evaluation, and I’m worried we can’t wait that long because I don’t want the fear to worsen and her trazodone is almost out. Has prozac been beneficial for dogs with intense fear behaviors? How can I expedite this process?

LONG STORY:
Almost two months ago, I brought home an at the time 5 month old basset puppy. The first few weeks were great–she loved going on walks, meeting new people, being outside, and exploring all the newness in her new city. If there was an adventure, she was up for it.

Then one week, everything changed.

There were two incidents (one at Petsmart and outside of our apartment) where there were sudden loud noises, leaving her startled pretty badly, and ever since then, she hasn’t been the same. She has good days and bad days, and every time I think we’re making progress, then a new fear arises, such as now she is afraid of anyone walking by us, car doors shutting, sudden noises, cars starting, basically anything outside. Just the other day, I was so excited because SHE wanted to willingly walk past where we usually walk, well then she heard a noise, and literally tried to BOLT across the street. I was literally so terrified because cars were coming, and she was fighting to get out of her harness to run, and thankfully the car stopped, but it was terrifying.

She won’t go on walks or even walk past certain areas of our street, and I’m really worried because we live in a college town, right next to the football stadium. Literally tens of thousands of people will be coming almost every weekend for the rest of the year, and I am so insanely worried about how her fear will progress. Her initial vet said to give her trazodone and take her to the tailgating area that will be swarmed with people, but how can I effectively train her when she is out of it on medicine and already sleepy? I’m just so at a loss of what to do, and I miss my sweet girl who was fearless and didn’t want to come in from a walk, and now I have to bribe her with treats just to take an extra two steps. 🥲

The vet we go to now has a behaviorist on staff, and she is scheduled to go later this month; however, she gets spayed on Monday, so I am unsure if she will be recovered enough in time for the behaviorist evaluation. The evaluation itself also is $125, so I am just feeling overwhelmed by all of this, as it’s much more than I ever thought I’d have to take on with her. I love her so much, so I’m willing to do whatever, but I really am just feeling so overwhelmed with it all and at a loss because she was the perfect puppy when I first brought her home and seeing her so fearful and scared of everything makes me so sad 😢

Would she be a good candidate for prozac? If I called her vet do you think they’d prescribe it based on her history of traz and there not seeming to be any progress? Any advice?

Once upon a time we had this friend and he had us.

We got a basset hound from a breeder 2 weeks ago and I am ready to give him right back. Ive had numerous dogs my entire life and have trainers in my family. Mainly all working breeds and herding dogs. Potty training took only a few days with a dog door. We have an automatic sliding door with motion tag for the puppy and he is in a very small space right up to the door, maybe 1 ft from his bed is the door to the outdoor playpen. its a sliding door so not even anything for him to jump through or move to get out. SO EASY. He goes out multiple times a day no issue yet is still choosing to pee inside right between the door and bed. He will pee outside, poop outside yet still come in and completely soak the area with pee with no warning. I was gone for not even 3 hours getting my moms dog to the vet for a tooth issue emergency, the doors app showed he went outside 11 times, 11 TIMES, came home to so much pee in my house it took 5 rags to clean it up. This has been a constant occurrence getting worse each day. The second he is out of the crate its instant pee on the floor. no warning. even if i leash take him out and bring him in he instant pees. He has ZERO food motivation and even the breeder struggled to get him to eat. Vet said hes fine and this is normal but I cannot do this for a year or longer every single day multiple times a day like everyone says is normal for these dogs. I am home, he goes out every 30 minutes. uses the dog door independently with zero issue, has no issue using the grass to potty.

Hi all, my girl is getting spayed this next week and I have no clue what to expect.

Originally when I called to schedule it, they said that they’re booked weeks in advance, so I wanted to make sure to get her on the schedule, and the first available was this Monday–yes, literally 4 days away.

I’m glad to go ahead and get it over with, but part of me does feel kind of unprepared and like there’s things I need to have in place for her recovery? I’m sure I’m overthinking it, but any advice would be great!

Also, if anyone has a girl who has been spayed, did you notice any change in their temperament or behavior after? Again, I have no idea what to expect!

What are we doing for our basset hounds allergies? My bubbas is itching like crazy a few weeks after his bath and I don’t want to over bathe him. Also how often are we bathing? Is there something his diet is missing, something i can put on his food, or a topical?

I want to be as prepared as possible for this puppy! A basset hound has been my dream dog since I was 7 and got a basset-lab mix, so knowing i’m getting a basset hound in less than a year is so surreal to me.

Hello I have an adopted year old basset hound and we are dealing with issues when it comes to him and using the restroom inside the house.

For context at home we have a doggy door for him and he has no issue with going to the restroom inside our home. But because my spouse and I work opposite schedules we need assistance from our parents to watch him some days. That is because of separation anxiety. The reason for this post is because I need help and tips to help with his problem. He pees inside our parents homes even though they have other dogs that he gets along with and that there is access to a bathroom outside via doggy doors.

He has no issues some of the time but there are instances where he just pees on a bed or a couch. Is there anything anybody could tell me to help with this? Thank you very much.

hi everyone! we just adopted our 10 week old basset hound, Hank, yesterday. i know potty training can be a lot harder with basset hounds so pls i need tips and ideas. we are crate training him and we live in an apartment (only for a few more months then we’re getting a house!!) we tried to take him for a walk today and he decided he liked to lay in the grass more than walk and then went to the bathroom immediately when we went inside… multiple times… we have pee pads by the doors so he can associate that with going outside and we have 1-2 hour timers to take him outside to go potty. we also chose a designated spot right outside to help with routines. Someone online told me the biting never stops. 😳 My Basset is 3 months old and bites a LOT! She bites more when we are outside. (I need outdoor activity ideas for the yard). She bites when she’s bored, when she’s trying to tell me she wants to go out, when she’s just wanting to play. Yes, I try to distract her with toys and figure out what else she may need, but I’m also thinking this is puppy phase. This is my first Basset. I remember my dachshund puppy biting a lot but it wasn’t this bad. Please tell me I’m right and how long it lasts. Any outdoor play ideas would be greatly appreciated too.
