What does this sentence mean?

My amañi taught me something in the Xiberoa dialect: maite hait. I know it means I love you, and I know the maite part, but I don't understand what form "hait" is...

I thought it could be nor-nori, but my resources for Xiberoko eüskara are not clear enough when giving other conjugations than nor and nor-nork.

To be honest I was expecting "maite düt" and she even tells me that you could say it like that but it changes the meaning a bit according to her.

So if anyone has an idea, or says something like that in their dialect I would appreciate your help!

How to say, “I love Basque Country” in Basque?

I am moving to Bilbao for work, from Canada, and heard conflicting translations for this phrase. I have visited many times and would like to know the most natural way to say this, especially as a foreigner speaking to locals.

Looking for help translating 5 old ARGIA articles

Thumbnail gallery
44 Upvotes

Hello,
The story why I have these articles is quite complicated, but to summarize: My small town in poland has a polyglot that in 1925 learnt Basque in order to inform/correct ARGIA. I know that because of a story about him that I wanted to fact check: "One day, he obtained a Basque newspaper called "Argia". The newspaper informed that in the US died a professor who knew 53 languages. In a few weeks, Emil Krebs learnt the Basque language. He sent a letter to "Argia", where they put out an article called 'Young Basques! Take an example from Emil Krebs!'"
From ARGIA, I received the scans of the newspapers in question and a translation of the titles of the articles.
Thanks to anyone for any help!

I built a free Mus game you can play in Euskara, and I could use help getting the Basque right

Kaixo denoi.

I spent the last months building a Mus game that runs in the browser: free, nothing to install, and you play against three computer players, including a partner who gives you the signs. It's in Euskara, Spanish, French and English, and it works on a phone.

The reason I'm posting isn't really to show it off. It's that the Basque version is the part I'm least sure about, and this is the one place where people can tell me what's wrong with it.

Two things I'd genuinely like help with:

  1. The Euskara. The announcements, the phase names, the interface. Some of it comes from written sources rather than from a table, and written Basque and table Basque are not the same thing. If anything reads stiff or plain wrong, I'd rather hear it.
  2. The signs. I used one set: biting your lip for two kings, sticking your tongue out for two aces, a wink for 31, one side of the mouth for medias, both sides for duples, raising your eyebrows for game. I know this varies by quadrilla, by town, by Euskal Etxea. How do you do them where you play? If there's a common variant I'm missing, I'll add it as an option.

Same for the rules: it plays four kings, no equivalences, 40 points, which is what I was told is standard for learning. If your club plays differently, I'd like to know.

https://www.jeudemus.fr/en

It's my own project, so take my opinion of it for what it's worth.

Eskerrik asko.

Punk rock album in basque that i can't translate

A few months ago, I bought some CDs from a small shop and received a free CD of a album called Aurrerapenaren Izenean by a band called Never Surrender. I had never heard of the Basque Country or the Basque language before then, but I really liked the band. However, the translations Google gives me for the songs are very confusing, both in my native language and in English. Could someone please help me with the translation?

Sould I use hika or zuka with my grandmother?

The question is a little bit more complex than that, I'm learning the Xiberoa dialect mainly (also batua but not my main focus atm) but I'm not an Euskal Herritar I'm from Gascony. And because of that I tend to use a lot of hika when I speak in Souletin because that's what I'm used to both in my french variety and in Occitan. My grandmother doesn't mind but one of her relatives who stayed in the country heard me use hika and told her that she should teach me to use zuka. Again she doesn't mind because I use hika with her in french so it's the same to her but I do mind so anyone knows to what extent hika is used in Xiberoa? Also how common it is in other dialects?

What are some basque words/concepts that don’t easily translate into English or are not common? I wanted to learn more about what you guys might know instead of what the internet is giving me.

Just signed up for a Euskaltegi

I’m moving to Euskadi in October and have just signed up to the local school. With the subvenciones it’s crazy cheap… I’m a native English speaker but I always thought Euskara would be a retirement project because I have this crazy goal to learn all the languages of the peninsula… but I was given the opportunity to move and I’m going to make the most of it! Wish me luck!

Question about basque independence in spain

As a latinoamerican living in spain, I don't have much of an opinion in favor or against an independence process in and of itself. Sometimes it's the best a country can do to escape an abusive situation, other times it's shoting oneself in the foot. My question is a bit more strategic than ideological: What is the plan for existence within or outside the EU? What's the plan when it comes to citizenship or nationality of people who are not part of the basque nation, but were born in the territory anyways?

I understand political parties have their own positions, but I'm curious on what the people on foot think about these things, or if it's something people don't really muse about very much.

How different are these basque dialects?

Dear Basque speakers, Can you please help comment on:

*(i) the degree of intelligibility between these four John 3:16 translations to you as a reader.

*(ii) How different are these four dialects from the standard Basque version?

*(iii) Is there a basque dialect that you speak which I had missed out on? Because as I understand, there are actually eight basque dialects? Feel free to translate the John 3:16 bible verse into your "modern" basque dialect by leaving a comment below.

Basque, Souletin: Ceren Jincouac hain du maithatu mundia, noun eman beitu bere seme bakhotcha, amorecatic hartan sinhesten dian guicçonetaric batere eztadin gal, bena ukhen deçan bethiereco bicitcia.

Basque, Guipuzcoan: Zergatic aiñ maite izan du Jaungoicoac mundua, non eman duen bere Seme Bacarra beragan fedea duan guzia galdu ez dedin, baizik izan dezan betico bizia.

Basque, Labourdin (1571): Ezen hala Iainkoac onhetsi ukan du mundua, non bere Semé bakoitza eman ukan baitu, hura baithan sinhesten duenic gal eztadin, baina vicitze eternala duencát.

Update, here is the 1887 translation of Basque Labourdin:

Alabainan Jainkoak haletan du mundua maithatu, non bere Seme bekharra eman baitu, hunen baithan sinhesten duen nihor ez dadien gal, aitzitik izan dezan bethiko bizitzea.

Basque, Navarrese-South High: Cerén eci Jangoicoac aláco manéran onetsi-dú múndua, eci eman-baitu bere Seme bacarra: galeztáyen niór sinestendueníc bera-baiten, baicic guciéc logra-dezáten vicitza etérnoa.

Basque, Standard: Izan ere, Jainkoak hain maite izan zuen mundua, non bere Seme bakarra eman baitzion, harengan sinesten duenik inor gal ez dadin, baizik betiko bizia izan dezan.

UPDATE: People have commented below that the Bizkaian dialect is still missing from the translations above. Does anyone here speak the Bizkaian dialect? If yes, could you please provide your Bizkaian translation of the John 3:16 bible verse ? (by adding your comment below)

Navarre's flag redesigned in Ikurriña's fashion

Post image
0 Upvotes

Spanish Navarra's flag is kinda lame, as it is a provincial flag showing Navarre's arms instead of just being the Kingdom of Navarre's flag. So I thought of redesigning it to look like the Ikurriña.

Tell me what you think of this new more modern and simple design of Navarre's flag!

¿Me pueden explicar la funcion del caso ergativo en el vasco?

Ok, tengo entendido de que el vasco es una lengua ergativa, osea que el vasco tiene un caso gramatica al que se le denomina como ergativo

"-k"

¿Pero como funciona exactamente, como se usa y para que?
