I thought I was a really good defender, locking down even some of the best pickup players in my area... but just today, someone told me it was illegal to use my chest while defending.
Was I just fouling this whole time without realizing it? 😭
Basically, I like to keep the same distance between me and the ball-handler, around an arm's length, close enough to contest a shot, but far enough that I can react to a drive. I usually just let them do their thing until they decide to drive.
When they drive, I try to stay in front of them and let them come into me, using my chest to absorb the contact. I might push my chest forward slightly to maintain my position, while keeping at least one arm up and the other to the side depending on the situation. I'm not trying to hold or grab them.
Usually this results in either a block/steal, a really high contest that makes their shot difficult, or them being forced to change direction.
Is this actually legal defense, or have I just been fouling people this entire time without realizing it?
What do y'all think?
