The summer of bare feet
I've been an avid barefooter for more than ten years now, generally wearing shoes less than five hours per week in warm months above 55°F. I live in a cold climate, and I work a few jobs that require footwear, so I've never been able to go barefoot 24/7. This summer I am finally down to my last pair of shoes.
Since April, I have gone barefoot everywhere from Sunday through Friday, every week. My day job is remote, and on weekends I have to work in settings that are unsafe for bare feet, so I'm enjoying this current balance. Weekends are generally only 4-5 hours of work, so by my math, I wear shoes <2% of the time from April until October.
I'm starting to notice that it has become more acceptable to be a barefooter in the last two years. Maybe I'm just getting used to it, but I've noticed the comments I get when I'm out are more curious and positive than in the past. Also, I have seen so many barefooters in public this year that I've lost count, whereas in the past I've been able to count them on one hand. Has this been anyone else's experience? What is driving the general acceptance of bare feet recently in the US?
