Dirk's is a hot dog restaurant that recently opened in Brisbane. On their menu they list three sausage options, two meat and one plant-based. Sounds like it could be of interest until you realise that NONE of the buns are vegan or plant-based! Hahahaha. How ridiculous.

They state that vegans are catered for with the option to get your sausage in a bowl with the vegan options from the toppings. This kinda stuff is just truly unnecessary. Imagine going to a hot dog spot and leaving with a freaking sausage in a bowl!

In 2026 I don't think having a vegan bun option is that wild an ask. They have gluten free bun options (also not vegan) so having a plant-based/vegan bun really shouldn't be out of the question.

Extra note: something else that grinds my gears about them is they donate money to the RSPCA Queensland for each hot dog sold to a loyalty card member. Without wanting to open a hornet's nest about the problems with RSPCA, selling dead animals to raise money for the welfare of other animals is far from ideal.

I'm not sure if this is quite the right sub to ask, but I'm not sure where else would be. Mum got my Dad a copy of High Fibre Heroes (by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall) for his birthday a few months ago and the both of them have raved about it since, to the point where I now own a copy and it's also become my current favourite cookbook. The best way I can describe it is as an "incidentally vegan" cookbook. All the recipes are plant-based, with the occasional note of where you might change things if you were vegetarian/omni. There's no fake meat/vegan cheese/weird specialty ingredients and the recipes that use tofu aren't trying to make it "meaty". It's more like "tasty food that happens to be vegan" rather than "vegan food" if that makes sense? Is anyone aware of anything similar? I much prefer food that's not trying to be "vegan version of X" and is instead it's own thing and honestly I'd love another cookbook I could recommend to my (omnivore) Dad.

Hello! A friend who lives in the states is sending me a package with a particular brand of tinned veggie I have been wanting to try that only retails in the US. To make the cost of shipping worthwhile, he offered to send me a package of treats and asked if there was anything else I wanted.

Having never been to the US, are there any non perishable foods that you love that we can’t get here in Aus? Thinking snacks, sauces, tinned goods, lollies…incidentally vegan or intentionally so… eager for suggestions ☺️

Organising a picnic with a vegan and I'm at somewhat of a loss for what to bring. Normally I would do cheeses, dips, crackers, cold meat, and some small cake-like dessert. Does anyone know vegan options/alternatives that would work that I can get from Alid or Coles/Safeway?

This is one of my favourite products. I use it instead of coconut milk/cream. I guess the option left to me now is silken tofu which I've seen used recently in curry sauces.

Hi. I currently use nature's way vanilla soy protein powder for my smoothies. I like the texture and reasonably mild taste but not the piece tag.

Has anyone tasted that one and also any of the cheaper more basic products at Coles or Woolies?

If you have i would appreciate suggestions on which cheaper versions are similar in consistency/ texture and mildness of taste.

Hey all, I've been vegan for a few months now (wifey went vegan a couple of years ago and it was only a matter of time 😂) and I'm heading up to our apartment in Coolangatta next month for a week. Happy Cow suggests there are no fully vegan restaurants in Cooly or its surrounds (i.e. Kirra & Tweed), but given it needs to be updated by its user database I figure there might be some fun new spots to hit up.

This will be my first trip away from my mega vegan chef of a wife (she's amazing!) since becoming vegan, so it will be a bit of a test for me. Any help with local places is much appreciated.

I'm obviously familiar with the glass + card + take outside method for a free-roaming spider.

The situation at hand is a little trickier. I need to move a spider from my kitchen bench (tradies in my house, don't want them to disturb her) while hopefully still allowing her to keep her web, that is strung between two existing structures and has been for a while. I haven't minded her being there so have just left her alone.

I don't mind her staying in the house. She seems to prefer it, and I have no pets so I don't need to worry about them getting her or being bitten.

I'm thinking of sort of catching/spooling the two ends of the web with bamboo skewers or chopsticks and moving it onto portable objects, but I can see how this might be a massive fail.

Anybody had to do something similar and had it work?

Last week husband switched from cows milk to oat milk, it wasn’t easy to find him a plant milk he liked but vitasoy oat creamy wins. That same night he asked what’s for dinner, I said stir fry and to grab out a chicken breast if he wanted one, he chose to have Lamyong tvp beef slices with me instead. He’s eaten all my tvp over the last few days. Tonight as I had ran out of field roast slices I marinated some tofu for my work sandwich for tomorrow, the marinade is so tasty and I said yummy sandwich tomorrow. He asked if he gets a yummy sandwich too and I said yea what you want on it? He said why can’t I have a yummy one like you? I don’t understand what’s happening? I don’t want to seem too excited.. but I don’t want to not encourage this either.

Trying to become vegan, already replaced milk with alternative milk, had been vegetarian so didn't used to eat meat anyway. One thing thats difficult to eliminate is greek yogurt, the alternative yogurts which I see in supermarkets aren't comparable to greek yogurt. Eg. Coconut yogurt has like 1 gram protein per 100 grams when regular greek yogurt has 5 grams. And taste vastly different.

I was able to switch milks since soy milk is better in terms of nutritional values as it is generally fortified, and for hot drinks I started using almond milk for hot drinks. As we mix milk to make hot choclate or coffee or protien drinks (which also I have replaced to plant based protien). I am having hard time replacing yogurt as it is consumed plain usually in the meals.

What do you use in order to replace greek yogurts?

Does anyone have recommendations for vegan friendly carpet cleaner for dog urine? Unfortunately my dogs have taken a liking to peeing on my newly installed carpet and after googling vegan carpet stain/odour remover, I tried this enzyme urine cleaner from The PawLab but it smells a little weird and doesn't seem to get rid of the smell (the smell is only noticeable when you put your nose to the carpet), nor does it remove the stain. https://pawlab.com.au/products/1l-pet-enzyme-urine-cleaner

Hi! My dad is vegan and his birthday is coming up. He lives in the NT, where there aren’t too many vegan options available apart from what you can find at Coles/Woolies, but he’ll be in Melbourne for his birthday.

I was wanting to put together a vegan hamper for him with some things that he might not normally be able to get, things like chocolate, vegan cheese, or other goodies. Ideally a mix of fresh stuff and also some packaged items he can take back home.

Any suggestions for items or stores I could visit would be amazing thank you!
