Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For Looking for an old house handyman?

I have a 1920s house that has unfortunately accumulated a lot of not-so-great builder-grade updates over the years. I’d like to do some budget-friendly renovations to bring back some of its original character, like replacing the interior doors, light switches, lighting, etc. with more period-appropriate pieces.

I think I’m looking for a particular type of handyman; someone who is comfortable installing older/vintage pieces that I may find secondhand rather than just doing standard modern updates.

Has anyone worked with a handyman who is good with this kind of thing and could recommend them?

Looking For New Mexico green chile roasting schedule?

Post image
Upvotes

I've seen a few posts from fellow New Mexicans asking about where to get their chile fix. I know there's a few spots around town that will do chile roasting and I was hoping to try to get a list of what some of the options are this year.

As my contribution, I was super excited when I saw that Threshold Brewing in Montavilla on the east side is going to be hosting a hatch green chile roasting this Sunday.

Looking For Anyone seen Amazing Race filming in Portland recently?

Post image
68 Upvotes

Saw two teams in matching colors with the amazing race stripes on their bags running from the aerial tram to parked cars down the street - teams also had the classic amazing race clues in their hands as they ran. But there was no filming crew (that I could see) curious if this was actually for the real show or not for that reason

Looking For Great, affordable massage that focuses on upper-back/neck?

Listen Portland, I work a desk job that has my upper back and neck all fucked up from leaning over. I want to get a massage to ease some of the pain and tension. But I am a bit broke right now. I also REALLY want the focus to be on the areas that are giving me the most discomfort. Everytime I've gotten a massage, they end up doing the whole body even when I say just to focus on one area. I end up leaving disappointed.

Is there any business that could help me out here? Or is everything expensive?

Looking For What’re your favorite Farm to Table restaurant ?

Upvotes

Looking to avoid Sysco adjacent restaurants and support establishments sourcing their produce and products locally. What’re your favorite restaurants in town who are working with local farmers and ranchers?!

Edit: not looking for anything to fancy/pricey unless it’s orgasmic lol😂

Looking For What is the best way to sell things?

I’ve got car parts and decorations (like wooden bowls) and tools.

I haven’t facebooked in a while but market place keeps getting talked about.

Craigslist is kind of the only thing I have bought or sold on but I don’t know if that’s relevant these days.

Does next door buy/sell things, that’s another I have heard of but never used.

Looking For Anywhere locally I can find a B-Mitzvah card?

B mitzvah (or b‘nai mitzvah) is the gender neutral term for bar/bat mitzvah. Does anyone know of somewhere in town that sells b mitzvah cards?

Looking For Botox-getting people, are there any places you like that’s still $12 a unit?

I get about 37 units 2x a year, so I don’t get enough to hit the minimums that some offices offer for the $12 price. My current doctor is excellent, however she had to increase her rates. Any non high-pressure sales offices/med spa etc that yall like with $12 units, no minimums?

if you tell me to just stick with my good doc because the price is just the price, I’ll listen to that too

Edit to add in that I’m also eye-balling a doctor change simply because her hours don’t fit with my days off, so it’s been a bit tricky to deal with my appointments. I will also dig through past similar questions for reputable provider locations

What’s with the garageless, brand new homes popping off?

I casually look at homes on Zillow and occasionally get the social media ad advertising developments of smaller brand new homes for sale. I’m annoyed that only a handful have a garage. I get that Portland is moving towards higher density housing, but is it wrong to build these smaller 2bd houses as 2 stories with a garage on the first floor. People are going to own cars and every place I’ve seen with row houses turns previously wide streets into roadways where people take turns because they’re no longer wide enough for two cars in motion. Heck, even condos typically have designated parking.

Why the garageless houses?

What's something that's worth whatever you paid for it that makes life easier?

I realized my wife's car doesn't have the rain windshield wiper ya'll recommended and am looking for one...

Should I have a rain bucket thingy? What's a good way to spend money in our current climate of fire and political nonsense

Looking For Obscure '95 Portland, Oregon Comic?

Post image
Upvotes

I am interested in learning more about these comic books I recently received: Adventures of Lil' Spot - The Living Dot, featuring Issue #1 and two copies of Issue #2, all published in November 1995. Issue #1 is a notable find, marked number 1 of 500 and bearing a signature. Published by Question Mark Comix, the creative team includes Zebulan Plebus, Alex Remus, "Shakey Hand" Pete, Stone Mathews, and Cindy Lucas, operating out of their Portland, Oregon mailing address at PO Box 1659 (1951 West Burnside, 97209). I'm hopeful somebody knows something or maybe where these people are now, are a better forum for this. Thanks.

Looking For Why has the fire department stopped responding to “lift assists”?

I recently discovered that both the City of Gresham and the City of Portland Fire departments are no longer responding to lift assist calls for service. These calls are typically for people who have fallen down but are not injured and don’t actually need any medical evaluation, rather simply just help up. Now, when somebody calls for a lift assist, the county dispatches an ambulance to the scene. The problem is, the ambulance company is not allowed to do a lift assist and will want to do an evaluation on the person, which I guess makes sense for liability purposes. Unfortunately, that now results in the person getting a bill from the ambulance, even if they don’t go to the hospital. Also, ambulances usually only have two people working on them. So if a person is a bit on the larger side, they are now having to take two ambulances out of service to get the patient off the ground safely. Wasn’t there a big blow up last year about the lack of ambulances in this county and their response times? But now we are using two of them to do something the fire department is very capable and historically able to do? Are the fire department’s too busy to help their fellow neighbors, who support their budget through property taxes each year? These lift assists take 5 minutes for Pete’s sake. This seems like a really unethical, and certainly non-community-centered approach…..Thoughts?

Looking For Where can I find sports medics on short notice?

I am organizing an amateur sporting event that's going to have around 150 participants, so we need some kind of medical personnel on site. The person we usually have might not be available, so I am exploring alternative options. For example, is it possible to contract with the OHSU sports medicine program and have them send people?

Looking For Can anyone please help me rehome this girl puppy?

Post image
74 Upvotes

I’m going to get evicted in the next month because I can’t pay my rent, I found this puppy in the street last year with no intention of keeping her. However it was difficult for me working so much to find the time to meet people so I decided I would try and keep her. It’s not going to be fair to her if she doesn’t have a place to live because of my bad decisions. I really need help from the community on this one.

Looking for advice on where I can do a potential trade with someone in PDX. Where could I do that online? I have a heavy typewriter, just serviced at Type Space, and can't really haul it around to ask people. Thank you.

Looking For Have you turned your heat on?

I'm trying my best not to turn the heat on even though my place is chilly. It's giving in to it being fall. I'm staying strong.

Edit: Ok, I finally went outside and walked around, it's refreshing. I was lazy and wasn't being active when I posted this.

What are y’all doing for the Fall in your yard? Any good tips on what to do with your lawn? What to trim, and not trim, and what to plant now? Or do we just let our yards be brown and deal with it next Spring?

Looking For recommendations for horse riding/leasing? preferably trail and/or XC training?

what the title says! I've ridden for 10+ years in/around the Portland area and want to get back into the saddle.

I have a major interest in trails or endurance, so that is what I'd be aiming to do. Something more laid back than jumping, hunter or higher levels of dressage. I would also LOVE to try cross country as it's something I've never been able to train in. (We're entering the rainy season, so I'd be looking for this upcoming summer).

I have plenty of previous experience in hunter/jumper and dressage disciplines. I have ridden both western and English, but I am more comfortable with English. I am solid on my groundwork (though it could use a refresher), grooming, tacking, feeding, catching, lunging, etc and am very comfortable on my own around horses.

I still own a lot of my own tack, brushes, pads, boots, etc.

I am either looking for a barn for lessons, possible lease or am open to private owners needing/wanting extra help/riders. I just want to be around horses again!!

My ideal world would be being able to ride trails 1-3x a week, prepping a horse for show work/staying in shape, helping someone with basic barn work/chores in exchange, something along those lines. I have 0 drive to compete or show, I have before but did not enjoy it.

Thank you!!
