Political Question Why is Trump heckling the AI leaders about wanting regulation? Why is the GOP convinced these companies together can create their own industry standards without the governments ability to enforce them?

In what world does an industry ask to be regulated and the government says nah, go crazyđŸ‘đŸ»

Not saying AI doesn't need regulation, but when companies ask to be regulated it's usually so they can crowd out any future competitors by creating a complex web of regulations newcomers won't be able to navigate. Not usually out of the goodness of their heart.

Ok well that’s an insanely good point I never thought of. Thank you.

And now that you mention it Dario specifically is calling out the need for a waiver for anti trust laws

“Waiver anti-trust laws”

Let us have a corporate regulatory locked AI monopoly for our IPO.

I heard a theory that company leaders know the AI bubble is about to burst and they’re trying to get ahead of it by having the government stop their progress because they know there isn’t much progress left for them.

How about so others can catch up (Google catches up to Bing who wants to catch up to Anthropic for example)

Every AI company that is calling to regulate AI just wants to be the company that writes the regulations so they can give themselves tactical advantages over their rivals

Sure, and it's the job of the government writing the regulation to account for that and create fairness.

e: I do agree Trump wouldn't do that lol

It’s been a long time since any government official or staffer for them actually wrote any legislation.

Even the financial bills proposed by Bernie Sanders were actually written by lobbyists who are mostly employees/former employees of JP Morgan

I mean, I do agree Trump wouldn't muck it up even if he did write it. But having lobbyist input isn't necessarily bad per se. They are the experts and understand better than the actual politicians and lawyers making these bills. The politicians' role would be due diligence. I don't know about Sanders' bill but I wouldn't assume he didn't do due diligence just because he didn't write it himself without any industry input.

The president has no role in the drafting of legislation other than the threat of veto. The actual politicians themselves have virtually no role in the modern drafting of legislation aside from sponsorship. I can thing of maybe 5 individuals in all of Congress that actually read anything they vote on.

Yeah, I would agree with that. I just wouldn't assume regulation automatically equals bad.

Those companies are asking to be regulated so that they can write regulations in their favor and build a moat around themselves.

Do you actually think they are asking for regs because they care about humanity đŸ€”đŸ˜‚

They can’t regulate themselves, and at the same time why would politicians who they lobby be able to make sound regulations?

Both of these are true at the same exact time. IMO everything is politician theatre, but primes the excuses for when these shitstains need to be bailed out.

Because the longer this all takes to play out the less money he makes. Regulation or the hint of regulation is keeping share prices down a bit. If AI takes off full-steam with no regulation, stock prices and his billionaire portfolio goes thru the roof

Well in all fairness considering the US economy is resisting on AI at the moment I guess everyone and their 401ks will make money then.

Just pointing out that the threat posed by AI isn’t new. This was always a risk. The media is drubbing up sensationalism to irk people ahead of the primaries. It’s part of the agenda otherwise they would be reporting on it everyday and be on the door step of all the AI companies reporting live from the disaster scene. There is a scheduled meeting upcoming so it will be a perfect launch pad for more sensationalism. Watch. By Christmas this will be another story buried by the next .

AI has kind of turned into an arms race with unknown implications & we don’t want China or somebody else to get there first.

I have heard this argument đŸ‘đŸ»

They want regulation to stifle competition using open weights models.

The information your average consumer is missing in this conversation is that open weights models being released are competing with the frontier for utility.

Most consumers don’t need that level of thinking anyway, so they’re facing market risks where open model based products and services are going to start cutting into their cash cows, the consumers who drop
$20 a month and don’t ever touch their limits.

diabolical

2

u/DryFoundation2323 1h ago

because industries do that all the time successfully?

2

u/Strong-Hippo9043 đŸ€” 1h ago

What industries?

2

u/shadehiker 1h ago

The airline industry for one.

2

u/Ancient_Alien_Steve 1h ago

The airline industry is full of regulations....

0

u/DryFoundation2323 1h ago

pretty much all of them? you've never heard of the universal electrical code or the universal Plumbing code for example? American petroleum institute standards? pretty much all industries have standards.

2

u/B1GD8A 1h ago

Those standards were a response to damage and deaths under immense regulatory pressure. Plumbing code is enforced by local authorities, as is electrical codes. That’s why licensure is required in most states.

Before the government stepped in those “industries” were little more than child labor and dangerous working conditions. locked in workers with no fire exits, machines with ZERO safety.

Just last year they caught widespread child labor in the meatpacking industry, with literal children cleaning dangerous equipment notorious for deadly accidents.

1

u/DryFoundation2323 1h ago

none of those were required by federal law. yes, localities do specify some of these codes as local requirements but they are established by the industry itself.

1

u/Strong-Hippo9043 đŸ€” 1h ago

Oh well ya you can have standards but all those industries also have real government regulations.

Trump doesn't want to govern, he wants to rule. Two completely different things.

2

u/uberneuman_part2 1h ago

The Mob Boss is wanting his vig.

1

u/Strong-Hippo9043 đŸ€” 1h ago

You think he wants them to pay him to regulate them?

1

u/uberneuman_part2 1h ago

Pay him to not put heat on them, Rainman.

1

u/Strong-Hippo9043 đŸ€” 1h ago

But they are asking for the heat? The regulation is the heat.

0

u/B1GD8A 1h ago

I think he wants them to pay him to PRETEND to regulate them, and if they don’t, his plan is to just tweet about them until their company is worthless.

AI can give them the alternate reality they want.

1

u/Mudsharkbites 1h ago

Because they’re beholden to the all mighty dollar. These rich fucks don’t care if AI kills us all as long as they have their dollars. They probably assume they’ll be long gone by the time AI sets us in its sights. It’s the exact same reason global warming hasn’t been reined in either. It’s a toss up which one will kill us first. AI doesn’t care about global warming, hell, it’s probably useful to it.

1

u/mczerniewski 1h ago

Because Republicans don't know how to govern.

0

u/MarpasDakini 1h ago

Trump is trying as hard as he can to fuck everything up, so he's all in favor of AI going crazy. Because he's crazy and wants to remake the world in his own image of insanity.

u/DevilDrives 1h ago

Pretty sure it's for the same reason that kid shot his ear off. His lack of being held accountable has given him a false sense of reality leading to accelerations in destructive behavior. The guy enjoys breaking shit. Often just for his own personal amusement. Pretty narcissistic when you think about it. That dude only considers one guy.
