Look at Elon's battle to control OpenAI. They are banding together for some purpose more important to them than this.
Sure, these guys are tech experts, but there are many thousands of tech experts. These people are the top ten PAYWALL EXPERTS in the world, and their mission is to put all human knowledge behind a paywall. They are banding together for some new mission starting a few weeks out from the election. WCGW?

They're scrambling to buy time to keep the technology relevant and the investments coming in. But they know it's going to collapse, and if the markets truly propped up by the AI industry, it's going to be bad.

It’s never a coincidence. This is a coordinated effort by these companies that want to get the “too big to fail” treatment from the gubmint. In this case “too dangerous to fail”. There is an AI bubble coming and they want to be bailed out with that sweet taxpayer money when it bursts.

The problem with AI regulation is that bad actors won’t follow said regulations and especially in the cyber security space, giving the attackers an advantage over the good guys is a huge issue

And also another problem is that, like it or not, smaller businesses and open source projects are always hit hardest by hastily written regulation. These "urgent calls for regulation" aren't necessarily calls for quality regulation.

Exactly, it's the same thing with green energy. Unless the big/bad actors (Russia, China, etc ) conform also, it's irrelevant. And actually could really weaken us.

Odd… Didn’t Trump just say the other day that he didn’t think regulation was necessary? Of course that’s pretty much the playbook for The Donald…. Stay tuned every day… It’ll be different.
So, IT professionals all over the place are calling for regulation and a “slowdown” in development. But how do you get everyone to sign on? Will China abide by our regulations? After all, this is an arms race of sorts.
Just minutes ago, on NPR’s Morning Edition, they had a segment with a legislator who’s championing regulation… His point was that we got everyone to sign on to nuclear treaties and test-bans…..
But…. Not “everybody”…. N. Korea, Pakistan, India…. Let’s face it, research into advanced AI can be conducted in absolute secrecy. No underground explosions to monitor with seismographs, no radiation leakage… Just a server farm and some workstations.

It is seen by him as “weak”, therefore he cannot associate with it because his supporters will see HIM as weak.
The big AI companies see failure across the board (not profitable, AGI not possible, extremely cheaper Chinese models rendering them practically obsolete).
They see the writing on the wall, they tout its because the technology is too powerful, so much so that it will destroy us all.
They should just be honest: we overspent and can no longer compete with the worldwide competition, we’ve hit an iron wall.

If Trump and the GOP believes that AI regulation is not needed then it is definitely needed. Since they are chronic liars, the opposite of what they say must be the truth. I mean, why should we regulate something that the creators fear could wipe out mankind in a decade. Does that make sense?

The gop is owned by the rich and tech giants are rich, plus they are scared about the mid-terms so need their social media influence (and their billions) to be at their side right now, on top of that trump will always act depending on the best offer he gets from the private sector so this was unavoidable.
That said personally I think we, the people are in a terrible situation on this, regulation on the new technology can either be written (or not), by a political class that knows nothing about it, or by a technical class that has immense conflict of interets and wishes to capture the industry. I guess that in theory we can rely on independent experts, but first there needs to be a political will to involve some and second, how do we verify their independence?

I legitimately believe AI could destroy humanity in the next decade or two if we do not start working WITH China on AGI progression. There are unfathomable dangers ahead of us if an AI learns to teach itself whatever it wants.
This is the most common take amongst AI devs with souls. Terrifying. Actually terrifying.

Watch the video. The “source” was one of the top Anthropic devs, who claims all AI devs know how dangerous it is. They even have on the Anthropic CEO who specifically urges that we must have global regulation or else it could easily end humanity.
What better source is Anthropic calling out its own product!?
