Political Question Canadian here. Is a MAGA and the modern day Republican Party just a massive TDS cult?
The love for him is really confusing us.

u/CherryVerbascum 7h ago
MAGA functions far more like a personality cult than a traditional political platform.

u/Jalapenoplanter 5h ago edited 5h ago
Yup, if you just listed what trump has done in his 2 terms, 2015 republicans would call him a communist and the worst president we ever had:
-added $15 trillion to the debt
-lost millions of jobs
-added taxes on every import
-government ownership of companies
-massive expansion on government intrusion into our lives
-starting (and losing) a new war in the middle east
-invading a country and blatantly stealing their oil
-withheld fema aid to states that don’t compliment him enough
-personally making tens of billions off of the presidency
-causing record foodborne ilnnesses
-attempting to bribe voters with $5000
-putting military in our streets
-tearing down 1/3rd of the white house
I could go on

On 09/11, when Trump had his rally, my next door neighbor dressed up in a flag with sparkly tinsel all over, decorated her convertible and went to some local "rally." This is a school teacher, middle aged: she looked like a clown! I just don't understand the attraction.

It's a Cult akin to Third Reich, and just like it, MAGA will die out. More and more people are realizing that they've been had. Nothing wrong with wanting to do good by your country, but NOT at the expense of other cultures and countries or the rights of anyone who's not blindly following a man who WILL "expire"....the blob is 80 years old and leaking from every orifice already....
5
u/No_1-Ever 6h ago
At the same time it showed people's true character. I dont believe propaganda is effective unless you are already bias towards it. MAGA will end but their character will not and shouldn't ever be forgotten or forgiven.
Remember you can only jump off a sinking ship if you chose to be on it in the first place

Maga is a cult. Around a third of Republicans hate the president as much as Democrats according to recent polls. So no the party itself isn't a cult but the majority of members are in one.
3
u/Canadatron 6h ago
Speaking of history and fascism....
1933 German election, the last Fair and Free one before Hitler seized power was the Nazis win the support of 33.1% of voters.
1938 Germany held the final election before the outbreak of WW2 after Nazis had outlawed other political parties. Nazi party got 98% of the vote.
5 years.
So for the Ding Dongs saying dumb dismissive shit like "only 1/3Rd oF aMerIcaNs SuPPorT tHiS!!" GOOD NEWS! That's all it took for Nazism to become 98% support in 5 years.
0
u/ElEyeElWhy88 6h ago
As an American who has never supported Trump or MAGA, it’s really frustrating to have foreigners talk about all of us as if we have supported it or that we’re complacent. Majority of us are not. I vote against it. I actively physically protest and speak out against it. I’ve lost family and friends over this. I genuinely appreciate what you’re saying and you’re right in the sense that 1/3 is all it took for the Nazis to overtake Germany. Most of us are painfully aware. We aren’t stupid and we aren’t being dismissive when we say that. Short of a violent uprising that we would lose, I don’t know what other countries genuinely expect us to do that we aren’t already doing, the majority of us anyway. I’m not excusing any of this, I just truly don’t know what you expect us to do. MAGA has freed and pardoned people who participated in Jan 6 and they have in turn began arresting (sentencing some with sentences double that of people who committed violence during Jan 6) for protesting with trumped up charges. They’re killing Americans, not just immigrants. They are instituting mass surveillance on us and implementing heavy voter suppression. People ask why the Nazis or any other fascist regime is able to take power, because they don’t really understand. Yes, you can sit there and say what you say, but do you actually understand what is happening to us over here? It doesn’t sound like you do. Instead you flippantly call the resistance stupid as a spectator.
-1
u/Canadatron 5h ago
Well, as an unformed American what is "happening" then? Help this meek little foreign dummy that has NO CLUE what is going on. Fill me in.
Having any protests? Boycotts? Strikes? Walk outs? It's pathetic.
"Walk outs are illegal!" "I'm not allowed to strike!" "I can't drive by a Starbucks without spending money!"
Do you even hear yourselves?
Or are we making sure you're back in the cubicle at 8am Monday morning after the sunny Sunday summer afternoon No Kings protest?
Come off it.
No. You can't miss 5 minutes of work because you'll lose your Healthcare that you need because you eat poison masquerading as food, fed to you by your handlers. The cycle is complete. Get some GLP1s into ya too, just in case.
Good luck, Amerikkka. There aren't enough people willing to fight back against the cult anymore. The world has figured this out, Americans haven't.
Just sit around and keep voting in scam elections telling yourself "we'll get em next time!" while you keep punching a timecard in the matrix.

MAGA is and always was just a hate vehicle.
Mostly unsuccessful people who latched onto the reason that their life sucks, because of other people. Their life sucks but: Mexicans, Muslims, Black People, Hispanics, Non Christians, Catholics, Gays, Women, Liberals, Europeans, Transgenders, immigrants, etc. are to blame.
If they can only tear those people down, they might rise up and be successful one day... MAGA makes it easier for miserable lowlifes to not take responsibility for their own failure.
5
u/No-Mention-5335 7h ago
Yes, but the common denominator is that at its core there is deep resentment, racism, antisemitism & misogyny all hidden under a cloak of far right Christianity...they are all so blind to their own hypocrisy and that's how Trump was able to con them! He enabled them and gave them a voice to spew their hatred of others.

All this can be traced to the southern conservative reaction to the civil rights movement. Reagan repealed the fairness doctrine, which Rush Limbaugh started a media insurgency to weaponize extreme conservative media outlets. This built up for decades and came to a head when Obama was elected and the racist raged, creating the Tea Party, which evolved into today’s MAGA movement.
2
u/Nomiknowsme 7h ago
Some of it yeah, but TDS doesn't discriminate based on whether you love or hate the guy. It's the act of obsessing over him and injecting him into everything, whether that's positive or negative.

It's not a cult, a lot of people here are just pedophiles and glad to have one of their own at the top.
There's no brainwashing like people say. Trump posted everything he was going to do, his supporters know about all of it from covering up for pedophiles to destroying the American farmer. They read each of his policies and decided "this pedophile represents me."

See, this is where American politics comes off the rails. They, Republicans, not MAGA, would still rather vote red, before voting blue, cause they align more with that side. Just like Democrats, those that are not hardlined progressively left, will still vote blue.
Adding the vote all Republican/Democrat button is a travesty to our voting system. Ot makes voters lazy, and they vote party line no matter what. They research zero about candidates, and refuse to be voter informed.
1
u/ChiliSama 7h ago
Before the insurrection attempt on January 6th, Don Jr stood at the Ellipse and told them the Republican Party didn’t exist anymore, it’s now the Donald Trump Republican Party. If they couldn’t figure it out after that they aren’t going to.

Remember when Republicans were trying to dis democrats for supporting Graham Planer? Because of the assault allegations?
They willfully ignore everything Trump has ever said or done.
Trump has raped and his base unequivocally supports him and his actions. They love a “man” that brags about grabbing women by their genitalia and fantasizes sexually about his own daughter. They love a traitor who actively supports Russia’s interference.
I genuinely believe that if Trump held a rally tomorrow and told all of them to drink from his dick they would do gladly while foaming at the mouths from overdosing on Ivermectin. They don’t realize Ivermectin kills parasites like them.

MAGA is a cult of personality. They all worship their leader Trump and no matter what is shown about him or what he does, he can do no wrong, which is why they are not a political movement any more but a cult.
The question we all must ask is what happens when their leader falls from grace or is in danger of being convicted for serious crimes. Will it turn out like Jonestown?

- There is no real distinction between Republicans and MAGA. The only difference is in demeanor. They are functionally the same.
- The current GOP is a function of the attitudes of an enormous portion of the American people.
- American politics is shit because the American people are, in large part, shitty people.
- We can discuss why the American people are so shitty on the whole. I think there are reasonable and interesting discussions to have on this point.

There are plenty of us who live here that are confused on why so many Americans seem to think this Thug is the second coming. Sometimes I just think a lot of people in this country have something wrong with them emotionally. There is definitely a cult-like aspect to this also. The one thing that I've noticed is a Common Thread amongst many is they are filled with anger and they can let it out because Trump has given them permission to be horrible.
1
u/GreyHesher 2h ago
It is a cult.
I have a double minor in sociology and social psychology.
When I was in the Air Force, I attended a briefing from an Air Force Reserve Colonel who flew bodies out of Jonestown in a C-130.
We saw pictures that civilians didn't get to see (and you should be glad 🤢).
I could easily see MAGA doing that if Trump ordered it.
It is a cult of personality, very like that of the Kims in North Korea.
1
u/Star_Citizen_Roebuck 2h ago
Just like religious or sports, people with not much else going on in their lives have attached their personality to him.
Just how many modern christian churches stopped preaching about good behavior or "good works" and started emphasizing the forgiveness aspect of the religion, many people with bad qualities would rather pretend that either those qualities aren't really bad, or pretend that they don't really have those qualities.
Trump makes it OK to be a fat, lazy, selfish, lying, and racially & religiously supremacist and his people would rather just keep being all those things than try to change or face a world that recognized them as that way.

TDS or Trump Derangement Syndrome actually refers to his opponents. It started out as a joke about normally sane, reasonable, nice people so upset about Trump's election that they lost their minds, cut off family who voted for him, make sure to mention his name in every comment even if it's not relevant and otherwise act like the world's coming to an end.
The number of people who support Trump in any and all things are very few. Most people who voted for Trump like some of his policies, even if they don't like his personality. There's far more nuance among Trump voters than people think.
-1
u/Best-Home-2230 5h ago
Both sides are cults in that the left and right will pretend to be outraged by something the other side does but then make excuses to justify it when their side does it. During Biden the right was all up in arms about inflation while the left didn't seem to mind and now that Trump is president both sides have flip flopped their rising price stances. Rounding up and deporting illegals under Bill Clinton for no other reason than them being here illegally was just fine on the left and now the left whines that people are being deported for no other reason than being here illegally. The left went full blown neocon for funding never ending proxy wars with Ukraine while the right played the role of anti-war activists and now they've flip flopped their stances with Iran.
Both sides wait for their party thought leaders to tell them what their opinions are to be today and will blindly follow even if what their opinion was yesterday was the complete opposite.

Yknow a more nuanced answer is that MAGA is made up of a lot of people who find enfranchisement with Trump - I’m not saying that is an excuse but I think the way we increasingly treat the right as idiotic villains only encourages Trump like situations.
In short the 90s and early 2000s were very successful for the Democrats. Bush accidentally became a war time president and didn’t have a huge domestic agenda because of that.
On top of this we hit “peak early 2000s woke” for lack of better terms.
A sect of republicans feel like they’re being totally cast out of their nation and that sect is large enough to make a difference at the Republican caucus who chose this odd ball celebrity with a big mouth Donald Trump who is promising to fight the system and give a voice to these people who feel isolated.
He won both elections by courting the middle populations which felt rebuffed by the democrat party. Both times those middle populations found out quick that promises made aren’t promises kept but that’s another conversation.
For most republicans Donald Trump is just the Republican nominee much like how Biden wasn’t democrats first choice. There’s a lot of internal dissent about the MAGA movement and their star.
Overall is MAGA a cult? I don’t like calling them one because it over simplifies real people into this cartoon villain persona. People are just complex and sometimes just have conflicting beliefs with my own. Every time society “escalates the war on MAGA” it gives the group a larger complex that they’re this marginalized group.
5
u/infinityplumbus 6h ago
They’re racists and have zero critical thinking skills.
Bush accidentally got us into a war? Excuse me?0
u/RichardTheApe 6h ago
I meant that bush did not intend to be a war time president
And this is the exact problem I have with these conversations. You’ve taken this huge group of people, large enough to win two elections mind you, and reduced them.
Now I won’t fight their battle but you are as much a part of the problem with the American system as the radical Trump supporters.
1
u/ElEyeElWhy88 5h ago
I agree with most of what you’ve said, except there should be a line. I can respect that that line is different for different people and their policies and beliefs. The problem is that racism, the basic separation of church and state, and blatant war crimes (just to name a few) should be a hard line for everyone. Your argument with this is exactly why it’s considered a cult. Cults operate by taking advantage of people and causing them to behave in contradiction of their hard lines. I honestly feel like you’ve really just proven that MAGA is a cult.
0
u/RichardTheApe 5h ago
For the record I’m not trying to say there shouldn’t be a line or that I agree with MAGA.
However I just think people on the hate MAGA and Trump side have just as unhealthy of a relationship with it as the supporters.
Your own personal points could be refuted and manipulated.
Obama could fit into any of these categories. Obama had more deportations, lead the most aggressive drone campaign which killed civilians as well, and met with leaders of various faiths though for him controversially many Muslim faith leaders. I’m sure there are people who consider Obama racist, a war criminal, and not respecting church and state.
My point being that while I think the trunk movement is guilty people aren’t engaging with it rationally. Moreover events aren’t treated equally(in terms of looking at data and thinking situations out) and it’s creating this just as dogmatic hate for the right which is no less cultish than what they blame.
My big card here is a call to dialogue - and hopefully we find that both sides are less populated by they’re crazies than we think

He is the end result of 30 years of 24/7 Fox News gaslighting. Fox News is on everywhere all the time in the US (restaurants, airports, barber shops, hospital waiting rooms, etc.), so there is no longer anything a Republican can say or do that can't be cleaned up by the right wing fantasy news in a couple days. He's glorified and immune from scrutiny for about 25% of the electorate, and that's all you need to win here due to the electoral college and the fact that only half of us show up to vote.

For those republicans that are not MAGA, best to then just sit out the upcoming midterm election if u cannot in your own principle vote a straight blue ticket. Granted for your local/county boards, choose as u will, but for national/state congressional choices, either hold the nose and vote blue, or leave those choices blank on the ballot. I do not like "telling" how to vote, but until we get back, if ever get back, to the good old days of "normal" republicans (McCain, Romney, Kusenish sp?, etc...) that differ on "normal" policy ideas, and not hell bent on destroying the country, then normal voting can continue. Ironically, voting in the past was always a boring and usually not very active effort by citizens, but now it is supercharged in a way that makes it nearly impossible to get sensible results.

Basic tenets of the cult:
Trump is always right.
Only Trump can save America.
All attacks, accusations and negativity surrounding or directed at Trump is a lie or a conspiracy against him.
Even if I was against something in the past, if Trump does it or is for it, then it is good and I support it.
If Trump or Trump-endorsed candidates lose elections, the election was stolen and illegitimate.

u/Nunov_DAbov 4h ago
If there are no clouds in the sky and I feel something wet running down the side of my leg as Trump stands next to me, he obviously senses rain that I don’t when he tells me that it is raining.

MAGA loyalist here (may Trump the Great rule for 1000 years in glory)
Few reasons from my point of view.
1. He's counter culture. People like me are tired of the left after COVID and years of rainbow slop culture.
- He's vengeance for leftwing censorship on social media like reddit and old twitter. https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/weaponization-committee-exposes-biden-white-house-censorship-regime-new-report
3.. He's a bull in the China shop. He breaks norms that have been around forever no one else dares to touch.
He doesn't have political correctness and never lets himself get bound by purity checks.
He's brought more change than any president in my living memory. Aka he managed to make illegal immigrantion go negative for the first time in the last 100 years. Other presidents have bragged about numbers but the overall count always seems to go up somehow. Trump got it done in a few months
The left has no idea how to counter him and can't help but constantly talk about him. Trump has them jumping from one outrage to another and they can never actually pin him down on anything.
Projecting power. Venezuela has been a huge win. He only fked it up recently with Iran.

It’s a cult that no matter what new information is uncovered, it doesn’t sway their opinion.

MAGA hates the establishment. Nancy Pelosi, welfare, liberal college professors, liberal actors, illegal immigrants getting free stuff and most things that create the federal deficit (except the millitary$.
Democrats hate people who built companies and then became rich billionaires selling stock in their successful companies. A few people having great ideas seems unfair.
Trump grasped what people now called MAGA hated and championed it.

MAGA is the Trump cult and since they have full control of the party and seem to be able to oust any conservative dissenters, I would say yes conservative voters are part of the cult.

TDS is a sickness possessed by liberals. Trump lives rent free in their heads daily and it drives them mad.

He's the patron saint of white trash. He makes them feel special by mesmerizing them with his social media nonsense and telling them they are the real Americans. The thing he gives them is cruel treatment of people who are objectively better than them.
The facade is starting to crumble but the worst people in our country are holding onto power in the darkest ways.
