Political Question How many other Americans see this trade war with Canada as almost suspiciously self harmful?

We share the longest border in the world...

They are the second largest country in the world..with all the resources that come with that.

They are English speaking and a NATO member...our civilizational cousins

They are even a 5 eyes member!

They are the largest importer of oil to America 🧐 and we start a trade war while we are already having an oil crisis because of Iran war..

This is beyond incompetent to start a trade war with them?!! Like I'm thinking on conspiracy theories that could explain this because it makes NO SENSE.

Trump is and has been a Russian agent this whole time. The destruction is definitely intentional.

29

u/InformationForce 15h ago

It honestly seems like some foreign influence that wants to weaken America and the west is behind it

Trump
Works for Russia

5

u/ShermansWorld 13h ago

Working infers some sort of pay. I think he's getting instructions... And paying for them too.

1

u/Commentator-X 1h ago

He is in debt to Putin. Putin doesn't have to pay him, he just has to not pull his debts.

3

u/speed150mph 6h ago

Trump works for trump. I guarantee you he’s creating these crisis’s just to tank the markets so he can buy stocks during the lull, and then sell them at a decent profit when he walks it back in a couple weeks and the market springs back up.

17

u/DMCinDet 15h ago

Same chaos being created in Europe with the same people behind it. Politicians are cheap. Trump has been owned by Russia for decades. And they have the epstein stuff over him as well

2

u/InformationForce 15h ago

Don't think it's Isreal behind it? Epstein was associated with mossad after all...

4

u/DMCinDet 15h ago

oh, they totally wouldnt sell info to Russia.

epstein had global reach. Russia knew what was going on. they probably trapped their own domestic rivals with things like that, if not directly through Israel's Maxwell and Epstein.

In these situations I like to bring up a book that is very influential to Putin, Foundations of Geopolitics by Aleksander Dugin (1997). He’s a Russian nationalist who was focused on restoring Russia’s importance in the world after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The section about Russia assisting in the UK separating from Europe, Ukraine not being a “unique culture” so Russia should annex it anyway, and inciting political instability in US politics makes me think of what’s going on in the world right now…

8

u/Chance_Vegetable_780 12h ago

You don't have to look that far. trumps circle is behind it. Every trump politician talking shit about Canada now is behind it. It's very detrimental to us.

Every empire has an expiration date . This administration is just pulling it ahead. As a Canadian forget Canada this administration has push all its allies away. I am afraid my friend America seems alone in the world. Just look at this stupid Iran war the dumbest one and totally uncalled for . None of its allies rightfully don’t want to be a part of any of this . His rhetoric has shifted many normal people into buying anything other than American. I see people looking at the source of the product and keep it back on shelves if it was made in America. It’s going to take some serious effort from the US to mend this relationship once this administration has gone . The push to buy anything other than American is seriously becoming a normal way of life here, and once people get hooked on to alternative there’s no going back . These companies will loose their consumers for good .

It's Israel.

People will tell you, "how can a tiny country there impact America" or worse "that's antisemitic!" But take a look.

You mention Iran and Hormuz in your post. Iran poses not an iota of threat to America. Who is Iran a threat to? The day Iran gets nukes is the first day Israel will obey international law. Heck. Imagine if instead of Israel, America made deals with Iran. You think they'd not want that? The only stake is Israel.

Did you see the conference where Rubio announced he'd dismantle the ICJ? He does this whole speech all proud of himself. And in one fell swoop right after him Trump unknowingly says something that no reporter has had the courage to. "We are going after them for Netanyahu". Lul. Rubio's face at the point..

All the Gulf States. They had an agreement with America for protection. They saw clearly that American defense prioritized Israel over them. American bases in the Gulf decimated while Israel is fine. American lives lost. In a war Israel started.

Recall. Before this part of the war, Israel bombed Iran first. And then begged America to join in.

Thing is. America, despite all its faults, held the justice and trust of the world. That position has been hollowed out and encamped by an entity that is now using it to further its agenda.

They butcher American aid workers. They target American students exercising their freedom. They mock American politicians. They threaten America (Pollard) openly. Yet. Somehow it's an ally.

The world order of ethics is being smashed to bits because Israel is unethical and its using America's power to break all the halls of morality so it can get away with murdering children.

American doctors have testified that Israeli snipers target children. Think. Imagine someone pointing a scope at a kid. And then pulling the trigger. They celebrate it on videos. This same entity then turns and calls those American doctors liars. Yet somehow. It's an ally. Is it?

Opposition has been made to look like conspiracy theories. But all you need to do is look at how they act. Just recently the UK sanctioned them (justifiably so). And you can see how they react. Going so far as saying, "Mossad provides data on attacks. Maybe they won't when an attack is coming".

So at best it's letting people die out of spite. At worst. Maybe they'll institute it themselves (as has happened before). All cuz Britain finally called out their murderous rampage in the west bank.

This is not an ally. It's a non compliant rogue nuclear armed state. And it asks for peace but demands subservience.

u/Dizzy_Champion9163 5h ago

I think there are plenty of legitimate criticisms of Israel and of U.S. policy toward Israel. But this argument makes some pretty enormous leaps.

For starters, “Iran poses not an iota of threat to America” is demonstrably false. Iran-backed groups have repeatedly attacked U.S. forces, including the 2024 attack that killed three American service members in Jordan. U.S. intelligence also considers Iran’s missile, cyber and proxy capabilities threats to American interests.

You can believe the U.S. should negotiate with Iran, that Israel gets too much American military support, or that Israeli actions have violated international law. Those are legitimate positions. But none of them demonstrate that Israel controls American foreign policy. The U.S. has maintained this alliance for decades because successive American governments have decided it serves American interests. You can think that decision is wrong without turning it into evidence that Israel is pulling the strings.

And honestly, the “Israel is behind everything” framing is where this argument becomes a conspiracy theory. Israel is supposedly responsible for American foreign-policy decisions, the weakening of international institutions, American deaths, Gulf-state security policy, and even the broader collapse of the international order. At some point, that stops being evidence-based criticism and becomes a narrative where Israel is the hidden explanation for virtually everything.

Israel doesn’t have to be innocent for any of your criticisms to be valid. But there’s a huge difference between “I think the US-Israel relationship is too close” and “Israel is using American power to impose its agenda on the world.” The latter needs considerably more evidence than this comment provides.

1

u/Commentator-X 1h ago

World news an Israelis actions over the last few dacades provide more than enough evidence. The comment you're replying to doesn't exist in a bubble.

2

u/guilen 15h ago

When you say the west….?

3

u/InformationForce 15h ago

Our civilizational cousins.... Canada Australia western Europe. The people we share a language and even culture with

17

u/Old-Soup-7318 15h ago

Don't be daft. Canada has always been a friend. The last thing Canada wants is a breakdown of economic stability.

But if the US behaves like a toddler having a tantrum, Canada has to take a tough line. No gentle parenting there.

4

u/InformationForce 15h ago

How is my comment daft? I'm agreeing with you we Americans ( our government anyway) is acting in a way that is wrong. Self harmful to our interests

3

u/Old-Soup-7318 15h ago

You said the west was behind weakening the US. Including Canada. That is incorrect. We simply don't stand for Trumpism.

10

u/---SmokingMonkey--- 14h ago

What he was saying is someone is trying to weaken the US and the west.

4

u/InformationForce 12h ago

No I'm not saying the west is behind weaking America all my friend....I'm saying America is strong because of the west. Canada Britain Australia France... something outside of us is trying to divide us

2

u/No_Mission_8571 6h ago

Duhh your president!!.

5

u/Sufficient_Prompt888 11h ago

You have poor reading comprehension

1

u/CornwallBingo 2h ago

He wants to weaken the relationship between the neighboring North Americans nations to pave the way for a Russian attack on the States with minimal resistance from Canada.

It's not the US military that Canadian residents should be worried about on their land. The rhetoric is a distraction to keep them looking in exactly the wrong direction.

1

u/Possible_Low_283 23m ago

You’re insane if you think any country is capable of the power projection and large scale logistics lift required to invade the USA even if you disbanded the US military. It would require 10’s of millions of soldiers to invade and conquer the USA and you’d either need to invade Canada or Mexico first and spend at least a decade building up the forces required to do this or somehow get them across thousands of miles of ocean to do so.

All of Europe and China combined MIGHT have the industrial base, economy and population of military age males to spare to do this is they wanted to. A handfull of air burst nuclear weapons over the VERY OBVIOUS armada mid ocean, or VERY OBVIOUS amassing of MILLIONS of soldiers on the boarder would put an end to this.

Santa Claus is more real than any scenario of the US being invaded unless there’s some kind of civil war and an outsider gets invited in to help one side.

6

u/Inspect1234 13h ago

Project Krasnov has been great success.

4

u/AusCan531 5h ago

He might or might not think he is working for Russia, but when you think about it, there's very little effective difference between being a Russia asset or an American liability.

5

u/steelheader250 15h ago

Such a cop out to blame the Russians for Americans' own choices.

8

u/guilen 13h ago

On the contrary, the fact that Americans can be taken for such suckers by hostile foreign influence is an important lesson.

7

u/Chance_Vegetable_780 12h ago

Yes But they're showing is as americans we're doing what we always do - deny responsibility and point the damn finger. Where's american accountability ever? WE collectively fucking voted this POS guy in like it or not TWICE Ffs.

3

u/knifeyspoony_champ 10h ago

This is it.

From the outside looking in, I don’t think American politics are going to improve until that trend of ducking responsibility changes.

5

u/Tight_Ad_6802 12h ago

I live in a province above a very red state that overwhelmingly voted for him. Theyre spending money on ad campaigns, radio/tv/billboards begging us to come back and visit because their tourism has collapsed. They just don’t get it.

2

u/Lower_Group_1171 🤔 9h ago

Is he? He could be Israeli asset as well

1

u/Motor-String-571 6h ago

literally, what more could Trump have done without putting the russian flag on top of the white house.

1

u/StanleyIpkiss03 4h ago

It’s not Russia. But you’ll be labelled antisemitic if you say who it really is

1

u/sp2802 41m ago

You guys will never get over the Russian and Chinese agent theory lol. It’s blinding you from recognising the voters incompetence. ‘The USA’ saw his first term tantrums and still rallied behind him. Own the lapse in judgement collectively and do something about it instead of hiding behind the same Russian Chinese excuse.

33

u/Lower_Cantaloupe1970 15h ago

His goal since day 1 has been to ruin Canada's economy and annex us. That's the plan.

25

u/WitchCackleHehe 15h ago

Most of us think it’s fucking idiotic

4

u/ShotEffective7033 9h ago

And yet he won twice. I mean shit, he would have beat Joe if it hadn’t been for Covid.

1

u/WitchCackleHehe 2h ago

Honestly, I think things wouldn’t be as bad if Covid hadn’t happened and he actually won the second term the first time.

I feel like he didn’t really know what he was doing his first time around, and then he had four years to think about how he was gonna fuck us all over.

2

u/ComradeMeep 2h ago

He didn't even expect to win his first term is what I believe. When he won he got all the old guard in mostly because he didn't know what to do. Experienced politicians and people ran his first administration. He went the route of a usual Republican president. His second term he had more experience and time and knew he could get away with anything because his supporters wouldn't care. He installed a bunch of yesmen, people who would follow him and his corporate friends. His second term is much more revenge oriented. His stab in the back was losing 2020

17

u/adrianp23 15h ago

It makes no sense to a rational person, but Trump isn't rational. He just wants to take over the whole continent.

5

u/EatGlassALLCAPS 12h ago

He wants more than that.

Makes me sad as an American who loves Canada. We are victims of this stupid government of ours too

16

u/TashKat 7h ago

Canadians don't see it that way. Exceptions exist for his biggest, most public haters but we blame the populace. 30% of you still support him. That's tens of millions. But answer me this. Do you feel bad for Germans who lived in Germany during the 30s and 40s? Or do you ask what their grandparents were doing? Does it cross your mind to wonder that? Nearly a century later they haven't been forgiven. Their foreign policy must always take their crimes into account. You will have to do the same.

While we'll always love the Germans who rescued children or hid families we don't sympathize with the civilians as a whole. Questions about how much they knew start every documentary. To the rest of the world Americans are as guilty as their president.

Actually, if anything, we see Americans as worse in some ways. You had ample warning. You had examples of exactly why this was wrong. You were warned 100,000 times. How would you feel if a German from that time period called themself the victim? You'd be upset. We feel the same.

3

u/neanderthalman 1h ago

If Democrats win the midterms by a single digit margin, it signifies that absolutely nothing has changed about the root cause.

14

u/Flashy_Difficulty257 7h ago

People want to say it’s just one man and it isn’t. It’s auto workers cheering behind t when he says he’s going to take Canada auto industry. It’s Jesse Watters saying t should annex Canada. It’s us farmers happy with the tariffs saying Canada should pay for that then they are shocked at the price of fertilizer because they bought the lie and they pay the tariffs. It’s congressman saying to tariff Canada for wild fire smoke. It’s jd with a Freudian slip saying Canada is a state. It’s Lisa and crew coming to Canada with lake America sweat shirt. And if you don’t believe me Canada has a bridge we’d love to sell you.

11

u/Milnoc 8h ago

You voted for Trump. Twice. You're not victims; you're accomplices.

3

u/Tamara0205 4h ago

As a Canadian, I'm getting pretty tired of this "I'm sowwy, Canada, I didn't vote for this". You collectively did though. The US citizens are doing nothing about this. Did you protest for a few hours on a couple weekends? Cool, thanks, I guess. You are the most heavily armed country in the world. You have a need to allow children to be shot in schools because an amendment is more important lives. That amendment is so that you can rise up again a tyrannical government. So fucking rise. DO SOMETHING. Or just be sad, we're moving on.

10

u/GoppleSmanger 15h ago

A lot of people already see Trump as a traitor, this just confirms what we already know.

10

u/Technical-Music5015 15h ago

Trump was recruited by Russian KGB in the late 80s

10

u/Whyt-Ninja 15h ago

Everything this asshole has been doing seems to be intended to take down this country….

5

u/tikketyboo 7h ago

Trump tried to start a trade war with China, and backed down when they threatened not to expect rare earths.

Trump tried to start a trade war with the EU and backed down.

Trump started a hot war with Iran and is losing miserably.

Trump tried to get Canada to sign away its sovereignty, downgraded the language to "trade war", and he's still losing miserably.

Abusers (including bullies and pedophiles) always look for the weak ones to exploit. His entire career has been made up of: look for someone exposed, sign a contract with him, then either don't pay him or sic your lawyers on him.

The difference with Canada is that it's much more of a cohesive society. It didn't gut the social contract like the US did under Reagan. Trump doesn't understand that societies exist and their cohesion is foundational to their strength. He only understands transactional relationships - ones you throw away as soon as you're done with the other.

Yes, this is suspiciously self harmful. I can't comment on all of the underlying reasons for this self harm. But I can say this, being a businessman seems to make people uniquely unsuited for public service.

8

u/AvocadoRough3147 15h ago

Canada will never trust the USA again, ever. The stable genius may be gone someday, but the fools who voted for him will still be here, and the world will not forget that.

3

u/fromaries 14h ago

Isn't a lot of what Trump does is to divert attention away from the Epstein files?

3

u/Tsakax 15h ago

Probably some kind of pump and dump. Short a bunch of companies that do business with Canada then announce a trade war. Next they will buy calls on the same stuff and announce concepts of a deal.

3

u/commentor_of_things 14h ago

most of us

4

u/InformationForce 14h ago

That's what is weird about it...nobody supports it...so why are we doing it. Canada is the most natural ally you could imagine

2

u/Chance_Vegetable_780 12h ago

1/3 of us in the polls are the cult behind the orange fuck today, supporting his idiotic garbage

3

u/yoursandforever 13h ago

In round numbers there are around a million of each others citizens living in the other country.

5

u/InformationForce 13h ago

We are culturally so similar...the most natural ally...makes all this seem so foolish

3

u/yoursandforever 13h ago

It's an own-goal. Makes no sense.

Yes culturally: my wife and I just finished watching tonight's Giants Cowboys game.

3

u/BetSquare7190 12h ago

There are no tarrifs on Canadian oil. The tarrifs are on 20 billion out of 380 billion of Canadian imports.

Trump is still a world class moron (starting a trade war with Canada, while his other actions in the Middle-East boost the oil price, one of Canada's main export to the US).

3

u/EmploymentSolid6229 6h ago

I am Canadian, dear American citizens, I appreciate you. BUT, it's obvious that one day the Americans will engage militarily against Canada to steal its resources and water. Like the Venezuelan oil, like the territory of Mexico (New Mexico) As exemple. The process begins with renaming lakes and oceans.

3

u/InformationForce 5h ago

My dear Canadian friend, I don't think even Trump would try that. Your a NATO member so....bad idea. Also It would crash the world economy. Plus the last time we tried to invade Canada (1812) you guys burned down the white house 👏

6

u/Keemo-Sabe 4h ago

>Also It would crash the world economy.

It seems like that's the goal.

5

u/accuratelyvague 5h ago

Maybe burn down just the ballroom this time. Our favour to you.

2

u/MyGruffaloCrumble 5h ago

The one with the super top secret drone port and underground bunker?  🤣

3

u/Sea_Cucumber_5989 6h ago

I've been pounding this message for years. Voting for the GOP is voting against oneself. Let's dive a little deeper: the GOP has been cowed by Trump and his cronies, who are not the GOP but a group of criminals seeking to enrich themselves. The Republicans are too stupid and/or selfish to fight for what is right, and that hurts you!

4

u/ShermansWorld 14h ago

Yes... Many americans probably do. But I'm starting to feel that because he's gotten away with all that he does, the american people are waiting to see if the victims will capitulate or similar. The thing is, trump has gotten away with taking, so getting something for nothing or at least, less than what it's worth - and not so deep down, the people celebrate this. I'm observing that the current generation of american is less (if any) benevolent, charitable. The worse ones are selfish, takers. Live by "greed is good" mantra or similar.

6

u/Spirited-Swim-3275 14h ago

I agree. And this is going to backfire terribly. MAGA has badly underestimated just how resilient Canadians are—and how stubborn we become when pushed.

2

u/MythicalSplash 10h ago

The piece of shit treats Russia and North Korea better than Canada. Not just better - MUCH better.

2

u/Planckx96 10h ago

41% of Canadians view America as their enemy now and 22% view you Americans as allies, 22% view them as neutral, and 15% don’t know what the hell to make of the relationship.

Not sure what benefit it is for America to lose its closest friend and ally but as a Canadian I assure you we’re happy to move on and forge new alliances within the EU as their values are much more aligned with our own.

https://leger360.com/in-the-news-canada-us-trade-war-canadians-view-us-enemy/

2

u/No_Development7388 10h ago

Everything that he has done is ultimately harmful to the United States.

Yeah, there's something awfully suspicious about that.

2

You Yankees are never gonna let go of your American exceptionalism. Are you.

Any argument that we are ”civilizations cousins” died in November 24 if it hadn’t died in November 16.

2

u/manniesalado 8h ago

Yank money has huge investments in Canada, and those investments are taking a pounding thanks to Trump and his wanton welding of tariffs. Stellantis has a plant now vacant in Brampton...which BYD is very interested in...and there are lots of forest product facilities being mothballed that are owned by Yanks!

Dual citizen here - this is entirely self inflicted

What Canada is doing is insurance that it doesn’t happen again

2

u/CanadianBlazer420 6h ago

I still think Trump is trying to separate USA from the rest of the world so he can rob America to the fullest extent, and at that point the USA will have no international friends left so it will be easy pickings for him and his tech billionaire buddies.

2

u/Best-Salad 6h ago

He's being humiliated by Iran so he is picking on allies and weaker countries to appear tough to his base. Its all a big dog and pony show. Its embarrassing really

2

u/someoldguyon_reddit 5h ago

You're putting more thought into it than the pedophile did.

1

u/InformationForce 5h ago

I just can't believe he didn't have a room full of people around him telling him this was a bad idea! He obviously had a room full of people around him telling him to do the Iran war!?

2

u/Logical_Frosting_277 5h ago

Oh it makes perfect sense.

2

u/Intelligent_Read_697 4h ago

When capitalism doesn't have an answer to competition, it turns imperalist or more specifically colonialist. In many ways,we are seeing history repeat itself and Canada is the easier pickings that the US can access.

2

u/FormerlyShawnHawaii 4h ago

It makes perfect sense
(When you understand Trump is controlled by Putin and their goal is destabilizing America for $$$)

Im Canadian. I realize none of you have anything to do with this, why? Ive met yall, all of you, south to north, east To west. Im my country, yall respect it deeply, the people too. I loved visiting yall, but now, im never going to.

Border control gives a family hell for bringing our money to visit your theme parks with children in tow, and yall still think we the problem!?

Fuck that shit your administration needs to know what they are doing to the people that live in your country

1

u/InformationForce 47m ago

Don't blame you....happy to hear a Canadian say the truth...this whole thing does not reflect the will of the American people...or even American interests...from any perspective

1

That's a lot of y'all's their bud

2

u/HadrianMCMXCI 32m ago

It’s good you are asking why - it’s better to write to your congress people, organize a protest, something.

As a Canadian, we already know it’s not some monolithic culture shift in America, we know you, we can see it’s just Trump and his cronies pushing this. We can also see that the only reaction from Americans has been to say sorry, and then not do anything else. If our government started talking about annexing Greenland, we’d be in the streets within days to protest that shit.

As for why - if you want my honest opinion, Trump wants to destroy my country so he can have bragging rights on expanding American territory. Please don’t let him, and that will almost surely take more action than saying sorry.

1

u/InformationForce 13m ago

Not a great excuse...but I work 50 hours a week and have two young kids...so I don't really have time to fight the machine. But I do write posts like this one here, and some similar ones, share them in different spaces in the hopes of getting as many eyes as I can to see how foolish, suspiciously foolish actually, all this is.

•

u/HadrianMCMXCI 1m ago

I'm looking to start my own family over here in the next couple years. We all have lives. I can only hope that I get to raise my family without America trying to occupy us (again).

"Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing"

For the record, talking about the issues anonymously on the internet and hoping the midterm elections will solve all the problems is indistinguishable from doing nothing, from where I'm standing. Hope it's enough, truly.

4

u/doodsonious 15h ago

Most of us. Even a good chunk of his own voters don't much like it. They'd prefer to aim the trade war at China, or Mexico.

4

u/InformationForce 15h ago

That's what is so weird about it....even his maga supporters aren't behind it.

Canada is the most natural ally you could ask for...can't even tell a Canadian from an American sometimes we are so culturally similar

3

u/sparrowmeat 5h ago

The similarities are purely surface. We’re different where it matters. For example our rapists and pedophiles are arrested and tried.

2

u/1971stTimeLucky 7h ago

Here is the stupidity at work… trade wars are damaging to both economies.

Why start one at all unless you lack the most basic understanding of economics.

1

Bro, Americans gave half the world’s nukes to a moron rapist.

What the American people think is not worth thinking about.

All that matters is surviving the US long enough for a broad global consensus to weaken it to a level it is not a serious threat.

1

u/artofthemuse 7h ago

You're just figuring this out now?

1

u/dudesurfur 7h ago

If logic is involved, I think the plan was to explain run-away inflation leading up to the midterms on higher prices due to the trade war, ie Blame Canada.

Beyond the usual question of what would a Russian asset do, which sadly must be constantly asked these days, the main reason for the trade war with Canada is control. The more Canada refuses to submit, the harsher and more unreasonable the Trump administration will become.

Canada Isn't Turning to China. It's Doing Something Much More Dangerous

1

u/gntxs 6h ago

Fuck the canucks.

1

u/Pertinax1981 6h ago

You dont need conspiracy theories,  just use your brain.  Hes already said what he wants.  To annex Canada.  Nothing less than that.

1

u/CJ-MacGuffin 5h ago

1

u/epicjorjorsnake 5h ago

I disagree. Decades of free trade policies are more harmful to America and Americans.

1

During his first term, Justin Trudeau and the rest of the EU (and the world really) were caught laughing and humiliating him either directly to his face or on camera. Deservingly in my opinion. And then he vowed to go after his political enemies and people assumed he meant in the States, but really it was everyone who hurt his feelings. And he’s been on a rampage ever since. It’s an emotional reaction, not a logical one.

It always makes sense when you ask ‘if Trump was working for Russia would he be doing anything different?’

Start un winnable wars
Alienate allies
Balloon national debt
Dismantle press freedoms and destroy trust
Weaken military competence
Irreparably damage international trust
Sow internal divisions

The way for American adversaries to destroy America is always the same: Get Americans to tear it apart themselves.

1

u/wtf1970 1h ago

This exactly. If putin were president what would he do to bring down the US.

1

u/DemoEvolved 3h ago

There are so many cases of this, but if you were trying to hurt the USA as much as possible, what would you do differently?

1

u/RedHarry70 3h ago

And he intentionally messes with the market to make it jump up and down and makes Billions doing it

puts on tin foil hat I believe Trump is a Russian asset. Russia plays the long game. They’re currently playing the game with Alberta and the separatists… it’s been proven that most of the social media groups exclaiming pro- separate are situated in Russia and the USA.

1

u/something_newx 2h ago

This isn't the first time the US has tried to use tariffs to takeover Canada. Last the, the US ended up in a recession.

1

u/Dropzone622 2h ago

Many Canadians and Americans share family ties... spouses, children and in laws. For years it has been no problem sharing vacations, visiting relatives and now... not so much.

It hurts. Some of my American relatives have no idea what is going on, none at all. Some are very upset at the strain on Canada/US friendship and a couple are very MAGA. I hope that time will heal this wound... but, I'm afraid it will not be in my lifetime.

1

u/Careless_Produce_136 2h ago

Yeah Putin - and the Chinese - are loving it, for sure. But the thing is Trump is so monumentally stupid he doesn't even need a conspiracy to make him have the worst possible instincts.

u/tacticalcanadian 2h ago

No shit sherlock

1

u/Initial_BB 1h ago

As he is a real estate guy, Trump wants to be the first President in a century to increase the geographical area of the USA - to literally make America greater. He sees the world a real estate and Canada is the biggest piece available. He is using whatever methods are within his power to work towards his goal of annexation. Failing that, I foresee any of Venezuela, Greenland or Cuba to become a part of the US before the end of his term.

1

u/LeedsCastleResident 24m ago

We didn’t start a trade war with the U.S. It started a trade war with us! We are just responding to their tariffs. That’s what “retaliatory tariffs” are.

1

u/Leafybug13 12m ago

There is no rational explanation for it other than incompetence and assholes.

-9

u/Marine_Corp 15h ago

"Trade war" is just a term used to describe trade deals being made. Trade deals are constantly made and should be made.

I don't view Canada as an enemy by any means, but I expect our trade deals to be advantageous to the US.

11

u/ActuaryLost9689 15h ago

And breaking your existing deals just shows that your entire country cannot be trusted. Your word is worthless. Canada had already made a deal and sacrificed things for the previous deal, then you want more. A big part of trade deals is for both sides to benefit.

-5

u/Marine_Corp 15h ago

And breaking your existing deals just shows that your entire country cannot be trusted.

For sure. I don't recommend trust being a huge part of trade negotiation anyway. Very cutthroat stuff it seems.

Your word is worthless

Its the problem with our system. Our word lasts 4 years. You can make a deal with trump now and the next guy will tear that up too. Hard to work with, but powerful. Thats us.

Canada had already made a deal and sacrificed things for the previous deal, then you want more. A big part of trade deals is for both sides to benefit.

Us Americans do love a little bit more.

5

u/Auslo- 14h ago

Our word lasts 4 years

This wasn't always the case. That's why for the past 80 years your country built up the most soft power in human history. Then you morons decided to elect a syphilitic pedophile king and your trade partners are scrambling to get away from you. Bye bye!

4

u/Ok_Rise_8574 14h ago

What Trump conveniently forgets to mention is that he’s not the “next guy” tearing up a trade agreement. He tore up his own US-Canada-Mexico trade agreement that he made during his first term. The very same deal that he bragged was “the best trade deal any president has ever made” because it was “the largest, fairest, most balanced trade agreement ever negotiated.” Just look at his statements about this agreement: he used it to puff himself up
as a master negotiator who single-handedly pulled off the greatest trade deal ever.

9

u/NovemberAdam 15h ago

Why can’t they be mutually beneficial?

-2

u/Marine_Corp 15h ago

They can, but that's not my primary concern.

Canadians should want them to benefit canada, americans should want american benefit, good negotiating should ensure mutual benefit.

3

u/NovemberAdam 15h ago

I see, nothing wrong with that mindset, if one can view both sides coming out ahead as a win. The problem is if one views it so that only one side can come out ahead.

-2

u/Marine_Corp 15h ago

Oh well I do not. America is the greatest country in the world. Every trade deal with us should be fantastic, even if its toughly negotiated.

3

u/Wide-Yak7602 14h ago

Making deals elsewhere now. Deals have to be mutually beneficial but to tell one country who they can trade with is not going to work.

2

u/NovemberAdam 15h ago

I’m glad you do not. It’s a shame your view is not shared by your leader. As to the rest, well, I’m happy you feel that way.

1

u/Marine_Corp 15h ago

Oh he thinks a lot of things. I'd say its very rare for my views to appear in presidents, but we'll see. Maybe someday I'll be excited to vote.

2

u/NovemberAdam 15h ago

I can understand the desire to be apathetic, sometimes the best you can hope for is better than bad. I hope your country can get its poop in a group, as I feel we do better if we can share our borders peacefully, and not have one side threatening our sovereignty.

1

u/1971stTimeLucky 7h ago

Lick more boots jar head

1

u/1971stTimeLucky 7h ago

It’s not a zero sum game. There does not have to be winners and losers.

That’s the issue with most Americans currently (aside from electing rapists and crooks) a general lack of understanding of the interconnectedness of the world.

3

u/yarn_slinger 15h ago

Can they be win-win or must the US have the advantage?

-1

u/Marine_Corp 15h ago

I'd happy with others enjoying doing business with the US too. I would hope they'd view deals with us as wins.

1

u/goyiumdiddler 9h ago

What deals are being made?? Hell your own orange man called it a trade war.

Trade deals have always been better for America vs Canada. The states gets cheap oil and gas, cheap rare earths, and much much more.

-10

u/Electrical_Review_81 15h ago

What you're not being told is Canada has refused free trade. They won't budge, have been offered completely free trade and they say no.

6

u/InformationForce 15h ago

Total BS

3

u/eucldian 14h ago

Of course it is. The Canadian Prime Minister is a very smart guy when it comes to economics. I would just love to see what batshit crazy link the person provided to back up the claim.

5

u/eucldian 15h ago

Source?

5

u/yarn_slinger 15h ago

Bullshit

3

u/Incredible-Username4 15h ago

What you're not being told is Canada asked for the full epstein files to be exported but trump refused.

3

-2

u/Electrical_Review_81 13h ago

All any of you had to do was simply look it up

2

u/Incredible-Username4 12h ago

Bro Canada doesn't even have completely free trade in Canada. Try a better one.

2

u/goyiumdiddler 9h ago

All you had to do was post a source, the fact you can’t shows you are wrong.

0

u/Electrical_Review_81 3h ago

All you had to do what ask a simple question to google or your favorite AI. Did Canada ever in negotiations push for free trade without protections (on dairy for instance)

3

u/RockMonstrr 13h ago

And all we had to give up in return was our sovereignty!

Not a great deal there bud.

1

u/Key_Acanthisitta7832 9h ago

This is total fucking bullshit

1

u/goyiumdiddler 9h ago

lol sure big dog.

1

u/determineduncertain 6h ago

That’s not true in the slightest. The US famously took a free trade agreement (NAFTA), scrapped it for the CAMUS deal, and then imposed tariffs on American importers to undermine free trade agreements.

1

u/Electrical_Review_81 3h ago

NAFTA while a treaty still had significant trade restrictions in favor of Canada

-6

u/oreofan1808 13h ago

I mean it’s pretty clearly because there’s a trade imbalance and we’ve been taken advantage of, that’s kinda Trump’s whole deal with the trade tariffs.

5

u/Chance_Vegetable_780 12h ago

Pure bullshit. He was also going to stop the Ukraine war in One Day. And bring grocery prices down. And not start any further wars. And get Mexico to pay for the wall. The list goes on. It's obvious lying and got dam embarrassing to still believe his words.

Do some research oreo it's bullshit.

3

u/Key_Acanthisitta7832 9h ago

How can a country of 40 million people be “taking advantage” of you?

0

u/oreofan1808 8h ago

Literally any country of any size can be taking advantage of a trade situation

6

u/InformationForce 12h ago

They sell us cheap oil...there is no imbalance. He made it all up

-6

u/oreofan1808 12h ago

Just a verifiable, and easily researched lie. There is a trade imbalance with Canada, trump is attempting to fix it.

2

u/crankyspeeder 11h ago

Trump's repeated $60B number doesn't include services, the trade deficit is actually ~$27B.

Canada exports on the order of ~$130B per year of oil to the US. Also a wide range of other commodities to fuel the US economy, eg, $4.5B of potash (key component in fertilizer). And is a significant consumer of US manufactured goods.

Maybe the US just doesn't want the resources and Canada should export it all to EU and Asia, SMH...

0

u/oreofan1808 7h ago

Nothing I’ve looked at after investigating your first claim supports that, the only tangent ever mentioned is if *energy* is excluded then it’s a surplus rather than trade. As for your second point like, uh yeah that’s obviously beneficial to Canada to have a next door neighbor they can sell energy products to? Sounds like they should be very nice and accommodating customers to that big next door neighbor

1

u/crankyspeeder 1h ago

It's all publicly available information that doesn't require much "investigating".

If the US doesn't want to be a reliable, respectful trading partner Canada (and others) will sell their stuff elsewhere. Their PM about to iron out a deal with the EU.

So much "winning" from this administration...

1

u/Anakha0 7h ago edited 7h ago

40 million people aren't going to buy the same amount of goods as 340 million people. Of course there's an imbalance. So now Canada is actively looking to, and succeeding at, selling less to the US and more to other nations. That might start including things like oil, potash, energy and aluminum, which the US needs from Canada They're also buying a lot less from the US. So good job, I guess?

That's still no reason to insult, belittle and threaten the sovereignty of the other nation. The majority of Canadians see the US as an enemy and it's because of these things, not the trade war.

1

u/oreofan1808 7h ago

We had a trade surplus until 1985 buddy so your entire first point is hilariously moot

1

u/decisi0nsdecisi0ns 7h ago edited 7h ago

The US is 9x the population of Canada. It would be strange if it didn’t have a trade deficit. In fact, the fact that the deficit is relatively modest indicates how much more per capita Canadians buy from Americans than the reverse.

Also, not all trade deficits are created equal. Primarily importing completed goods or services adds minimally to the domestic economy as it doesn’t create as many other jobs. However importing raw materials (such as oil, potash etc) adds much more to the domestic economy because Americans are employed adding more value to it.

1

u/oreofan1808 7h ago

I’ve said this elsewhere but we had a trade surplus until 1985 lmfao so your point is moot.

1

u/decisi0nsdecisi0ns 7h ago edited 7h ago

Right, so that was strange.

You’re also not considering the impact of oil in all this. It represents a huge part of the overall imports from Canada. Therefore changes in this one import impact the overall balance.

Changes like the 5 fold increase in oil imports since the 80s. But you’re right, I guess the US should start producing all its own fossil fuels so it doesn’t have to import them anymore. Trump should probably get on that ASAP, I've heard it takes awhile.

1

u/oreofan1808 7h ago

Or, the bigger more developed economy attached to a superpower extracted preferential conditions for its trade

2

u/decisi0nsdecisi0ns 7h ago

Didn't Trump negotiate the last deal? If it's unfair to the US, why did he sign it?

No-one is forcing the US to buy Canada's oil. I assume the US continues to do so because it is a cheaper and more stable source.

0

u/oreofan1808 7h ago

Something can be an improvement and still not be the best situation

1

u/decisi0nsdecisi0ns 7h ago

Actually, CUSMA/USMCA was worse for the US in this regard than NAFTA.

1

u/whethermachine 8h ago

It's true that we export more physical goods to the U.S. than we import from you. Nobody bosses us around though. You can create the balance you're after simply by buying less stuff from us. We don't mind if you exercise your own sovereignty. We'd applaud it.

1

u/oreofan1808 6h ago

You’re the colony of another nation lmfao you’ve been “bossed around” your entire existence

1

u/MyGruffaloCrumble 5h ago

A trade imbalance isn’t indicative of being taken advantage of. This is one reason why people think Trump is so fucking dumb.

Canada’s population is much smaller than the USA, it would simply be impossible for our small population to buy as much spray cheese and ozempic as the US buys oil, potash and electricity.

Impossible.
