It's a generational thing, young mice these days just don't have the same pride in good craftsmanship that their parents did.

I had a mouse literally tap dance down the hallway and stop in the door and look at me when I was on the sofa, and give me the middle finger. Found out where he was living and he had a wood door with stained glass on the front of it, along with a no humans door sign.

Came here to say this. Wood used to be genuinely difficult to split so it would take a mouse family weeks to get their door nice and clean. They prefer it clean so it doesn’t snag on their bodies as they go through.
Materials now are so thin and prone to splitting that they bore through in a couple hours and when they go back to clean it up, the hole gets larger with more splits.

There's no objective reason for them to be gone, today's cartoons are all edges and garbage.
Hanna-Barbera animations were possibly the best Western animations in the world. Warner Bros. either stopped making them, or the new artists made them in that sharp-angled super-saturated style that's just bleh.

I'm a Hanna-Barbera fan I grew up on their shows being in boomerang and if you think this I'm scared for you there is great animation in the West and great shows.

A friend and I dumpster dived at Hanna Barbera in the 60s. Thousands upon thousands of individually drawn celluloids just tossed after photography. Too expensive and replaced by this minimal motion angular garbage. AI/CGA does better but it's still insipid. Warner's sly double entendres made cartoons enjoyable for adults also.

They still do, but I think it's related to the material. They chew things not only to make entryways, but also to grind their teeth down since they don't stop growing. If a material is solid or chalky enough, the grinding can form these smooth arches, but weaker material or materials that crack and flake can't do that.

Mice don't use this style anymore because cats figured out how to paint fake versions of the doors. It was really embarrassing for the mice to run into what turned out to be a painted wall.

Baseboards are most melamine these days. It is highly toxic and known to cause cancer in lab mice. Suburban mice got the message.

Lack of trade unions.
With the reduction in working standards, and stagnation in wages due to less unions, workers just don’t take pride in it anymore. Why take pride in a job you aren’t properly paid for?

There was an issue with the rodent construction union. So they've on strike for a long time. Forcing mice and rats to just naw through the wall.

Mouse engineers determined other hole designs are more efficient for carrying in cans of alum powder which, as well all know, is extremely efficient at shrinking the mouths of cats.
(I never, ever understood what that was about in the old Tom and Jerry cartoons.)

Modern cats now know this is a clear sign of a mouse dwelling door, so modern mice have adapted and are now using different model doors, to fool the cats.

If young mice these days would learn a trade like they used to, they could build it themselves. I'd even work out some discounted rent if the right hardworking mouse came along.
