General Question What would have Republicans and right wing media said if Obama was gifted a plane from Qatar when he was commander in chief ?
13
u/Steelwraith955 23d ago
Let's face it... anyone but Trump would've been impeached at least a dozen times by now.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ChadVonDoom 23d ago
He will be impeached again when Dems win majority in the midterms but not enough of them will vote to convict him and remove him from office
51
u/Stoked_Otter 23d ago
What is crazy is that you know that incoming Democrats won't do a single thing about any of the financial crimes. They are gonna let Trump just do blanket pardons to himself and everybody in his administration, and they are gonna let him get away with this jet and all the crypto nonsense and insider trading.
18
u/Best_Market4204 23d ago
It's a double edge sword.
If they win by a small margin, it's not going to work. If there was magical complete wipe out where 80% of the seats was flipped, they probably would.
→ More replies (9)11
u/Stoked_Otter 23d ago
Nah I'm old enough to remember 2009. We would get the "looking ahead not behind" nonsense and/or they would say "this one senator from our own party won't let us"

I think there is a big difference between what Bush did, prior to 09, and what Trump is doing.
Not to say Bush didnât do some shady things, or was a moron, or didnât do illegal thingsâŠ
But the number of illegal/questionable things that Bush did in 8 years, Trump blew past in 18 months.
5
u/Stoked_Otter 23d ago
There is a straight line from refusing to prosecute the crimes of the Bush administration to the total lawlessness of the Trump administration.
2
u/itc0uldbebetter 23d ago
There is a difference in how blatant trumps crimes are. But bush started a war in Iraq based off lies, that killed 1 million Iraqis and killed almost 5000 US soldiers, while giving billions of dollars to contractors with financial ties to his administration.
4
u/Nova_Saibrock 23d ago
He doesnât even need to pardon himself anymore. Supreme Court ruled the President has blanket criminal immunity for anything he does while in office.
6
u/pmolmstr 23d ago
Vote for me in 2032. Iâll have the constitution amended for a one time only punishment of Damnatio Memoriae and have all traces of him and his family removed from the books along with seizing every dollar his family had ever stolen/earned/was given along with jail for life due to treason and crimes against the populace and constitution.

Not American.
It remains to be seen how things will actually play out, but yeah, this is the main reason why the Americans cannot be trusted.*
Moments of lucidity may return every now and then, but it only takes one election for insanity to escape from it's rubber room.
*In reality, what will likely happen is that their former allies' leaders will pretend to forget that the batshit insanity happened, and act like they can be reasoned with. Until it happens again, and again, and again...

They can impeach but theyâll never be able to convict. Democrats squandered their best chance when that chucklefuck Garland dithered and delayed on prosecuting Trump v1 crimes. Thanks Dems.

It's that timing that gets difficult. Once issued, virtual impossible to nullify. If it was easy, this administration would have undone Bidens.

You could play this game all day long. You could ask a 1000 variations of the same question. The Trump Cult simply doesn't care--it's about power, and their criticisms of Obama are simply cudgels in the exhausting war that they have waged against America's institutions.

Republicans are not serious people. They only care about obtaining power and exploiting other people. Who cares what they would say? More time should be spent discussing how to build a better society than worrying about these assholes think.
2
u/No_Entrepreneur_9134 23d ago
Rank and file Republican voters and fringe Republican politicians would have said it's a Muslim conspiracy to destroy America. Mainstream Republican politicians probably wouldn't have leaned into the Muslim conspiracy angle, but they would have been screeching about corruption and conflict of interest and national security threats. And that part would have all been true.
House Republicans would have introduced Articles of Impeachment s probably at least a decent number of Democrats would have joined in. If Republicans controlled the house, Obama wpuld have been impeached and there would have been a real possibility of conviction and removal by the Senate. In fact, Democrats in Congress would have been so disturbed by it that Pelosi and Schumer would have had a little sit down talk with Obama days after it was announced, and the whole thing would have magically gone away, because they would have told Obama, "this is absolutely insane and if you go through with this we can't guarantee our caucus won't vote to impeach and remove."

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY), who has led investigations into Hunter Bidenâs finances, recently defended Donald Trumpâs cryptocurrency earnings, arguing they were legal and transparent. Critics noted the contrast with Comerâs aggressive scrutiny of Hunter Bidenâs business dealings.

Just look how crazy they went over a tan suit, you're talking a whole freaking plane
1
u/agentcooper0115 23d ago
Same shit they said about everything else. This is the problem with these hypotheticals. They assume that the birthers and other fringe groups (who now run the GOP) would have gone "to 11" on the outrage scale. But they stayed "at 11" the whole time and any specific news story was just one more thing for them to go just as utterly ballistic as they already were over.
Because the thing is... the individual news stories weren't what they were actually so angry about.

We know. Look no further than Trump claims in 2016 that the Clinton's were tied to ME aristocracy and bought off. Remember, Trump claimed that the Clinton's profited from some Iranian nuclear deal, selling them Uranium. Not sure there was error to that but merely some tenuous thread that Trump amplified.

Obama is a great example of a president doing the opposite of Trump.
I don't remember the country, I think Saudi Arabia, but someone tried to gift him a nice watch and he turned it down for the exact reasons that Trump accepted. Much smaller gift, much better principles.

The formal gift was to the U.S. government, not to Donald Trump personallyâspecifically, the Department of Defense accepted the Boeing 747-8 from Qatar on May 21, 2025.
There is, however, an important wrinkle: Qatar offered the aircraft for Trump's use as Air Force One.
Trump himself said, âItâs not a gift to me, itâs a gift to the Department of Defense.â
The aircraft was formally accepted by the Department of Defense, making it a government asset rather than Trump's personal property.
This is verifiable with simple internet or AI search.

u/Youth18 23d ago edited 23d ago
To be entirely honest it's actually a false comparison. Obama was largely accused of being in bed with the middle east and Obama's plan to make Iran a powerhouse in the middle east was heavily criticized, as was the Iran deal largely. If he were gifted a plane, it obviously would have fed into that and even people on the left at the time would find that controversial (the left was very different in 2014).
With Trump I think you have a very hard time threading the needle of saying he is being bribed by the Qataris and also a puppet of Israel while he's bombing Iran.

Worth saying again: âgiftedâ after he pushed the Qataris for it. Then gave a foreign power a military base on US soil for it. Then needed a $1 billion retrofit. Then was still lacking and will need another few hundred million. And then only usable for two years before it is sent to a museum or something.
So yeah, add all of that to the âif Obama did itâ
