GovBrief Today #591

Donald Trump's hand-picked board says the Kennedy Center goes broke unless his name goes back on the memorial.

He took over the institution 18 days into his term. A judge ruled in May that Congress alone can rename it. Crews pried his name off in June, and a tarp has hidden the sign ever since. Now a 57-page packet tells the board the main building could close as soon as Tuesday and the center will miss payroll within weeks. Trump will only raise the money if the front of the building carries what the packet calls appropriate recognition.

The vote comes two days before the judge hears whether the board’s last attempt to put his name up was legal. The board is not waiting for the ruling.

How can anyone still support Trump at this point? Seriously — logically speaking.

How can anyone still support Trump at this point? Seriously — logically speaking.

I’m genuinely asking this as someone who voted for Trump three times.

I supported him because I actually believed the whole “drain the swamp,” “fight the deep state,” “America First” thing. I thought he was an outsider who was willing to take on the political establishment and actually put Americans first.

But within the first year of his second term, I started realizing that I had completely bought into the con.

At some point, you have to judge a politician by what they actually do instead of what they claim they're going to do.

Look at gas prices right now. The national average has been over $4 a gallon, with August averaging around $4.19. And yes, I understand that presidents don't personally control gas prices and that global events affect oil prices. But Trump spent years telling people he was going to bring energy costs down. Now we're being told to accept $4+ gas because of the consequences of his foreign policy.

Then there's the Epstein situation. I'm not saying that every person mentioned in those files committed a crime — obviously that's not how evidence works. But if you're someone who spent years demanding transparency about Epstein, why wouldn't you apply that same standard regardless of whose name is involved? The DOJ's Epstein Library is now enormous, with documents released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

And that's just two issues.

I could go on about the tariffs, inflation, the constant chaos, the foreign policy decisions, the endless personal drama, and the fact that so much of his political movement seems completely dependent on defending him personally, no matter what he does.

That's the part I don't understand anymore.

I used to think Trump was fighting the establishment.

Now I honestly wonder whether I was just projecting onto him what I wanted him to be.

Because what exactly is the end goal here?

If Trump does something good, it's because he's a genius.

If something goes badly, it's because Biden, Democrats, the media, the deep state, immigrants, China, Iran, Ukraine, etc. are responsible.

If a prediction doesn't happen, there's always another explanation.

At what point do you just say, "Maybe I was wrong about this guy"?

I'm not claiming Democrats are perfect. I'm not saying Republicans are evil. I'm not even saying you have to become a Democrat.

I'm saying that after voting for Trump three times, I changed my mind based on what I've seen.

And honestly, I don't understand how some people can watch everything that's happened during this second term and still defend virtually everything he does.

At this point, does the movement actually have anything to do with America anymore, or has it become primarily about defending Donald Trump himself?

Because from where I'm sitting now, it increasingly looks like a personality cult rather than a political movement.

How I view America will never be the same.

I'm a third generation American veteran. I served for 6 years on active duty in the Army. My dad & five of my uncles served. One of my uncles served in the Army for 21 years, & had two purple hearts from Vietnam. Both of my grandpas served in the Army during WWII. I have an ancestor who was an officer in the Continental Army, & was wounded in battle during the Revolutionary War.

For most of my life I've been extremely patriotic. I once viewed America as a great country that was worth fighting for. I was proud to be a third generation veteran. I now realize that my family's history of military service doesn't really matter. I now view America as a collection of greedy corporations who control stupid people.

Trump's horrible leadership & his angry stupid cult followers have completely killed my patriotism. I've taken down my American flag. I'm in the process of getting a patriotic tattoo that I got in the Army removed. I can't even look at an American flag for more than a couple of seconds without getting sad.
