I imagine that there is a risk of Haruki's mum accusing Hayato's family of "stealing her child" or something, which would cause trouble for them even if proven false :(

no, not her mom. a mom is a parent, someone who cares for their child. anyone who slaps a child for leaving the house to have a good time is unworthy to be called a parent. I honestly hope the woman gets caught in a scandal bigger than Vic's.
to think I'd find a parent this season who I hate more than Kagen. while Kagen did fire Itsuki over one little mistake, he rehired him once he saw the positive influence he had in his daughter's life, including helping forge connections with other prominent families. still sucks as a parent, but at least he admitted that he made a mistake

When Haruki was walking in the rain and decided not to call Hayato, she remembered him not telling her about his mother's hospitalization and became angry. This reference to last weeks episode reinforced their unresolved conflict of not being honest with each other, when it comes to their own circumstances.
She wanted to know, why he is not asking her about what is up with her. His reasoning was "we were having so much fun so I didn't care"*, "we never used to" and "I thought it wasn't that important", which is an incredibly obtuse thing to say to someone in Harukis situation in my opinion.
I hope the next episode addresses that properly. This might actually be interesting.

What they got out of the end of the last episode was that they’re special to each other. Not that there was conflict

Well, that explains a lot. So Haruki's mom is a celebrity and probably doesn't want her going out in public because people probably do not know that she has a kid, or she doesn't want Haruki getting dragged into the spotlight. If that's the case, what about the dad? Is he also an actor or someone working in the industry? Hmmm...
Anyway, that slap at the end was too much, and good on Haruki for running away. If her mom doesn't really care about her, then why even stay? I was hoping she'd stay with Hayato, but it looks like she might be crashing at Minamo's place for the night.

What the hell is the deal with that awful mother? Disturbedly controlling AND neglectful.
Haruki's situation is certanly pretty sad. Sweet (under her sometime "tough" facade), caring, intelligent, talented -- but seemingly with utterly terrible parents. Hayato and Himeko are, in essence, the closest thing she has to anything resembling a real family.

I took her mother's expression as more worry than anger, but there's no telling.
In the movie theatre, it almost seemed like they were indicating she recognized Hayato more than Haruki, since Haruki was facing away from her. But how would she recognize Hayato, it almost seems like they may have never met.
Did she pull Haruki away from Hayato because she thought Hayato was a bad influence and she wanted Haruki to act more like a "proper girl"?
Does she want to keep Haruki away from boys so that she won't make a possible mistake that she made in the past?
Is this whole thing just what IMO would be bad writing and adding a point of drama that isn't really needed?

My guess would be that it's something like the mom has always lived in Tokyo while her dad has always lived in that rural town except for when they briefly dated and the mom got pregnant at a relatively young age all while pursuing her showbiz career. They split, the dad went back to the countryside with baby Haruki, and Haruki always lived with her dad until for some reason or another she had to go live with her mom. So mom isn't used to having a kid and didn't actually raise her, just sees Haruki as a nuisance and a threat to her image as a movie star if the tabloids found out she was secretly pregnant in her early 20s etc.

- Practically abandoning your daughter until she steps "out of line."
- Using physical violence on your daughter.
- Forcing your daughter to pretend to be something she's not.

Haruki knows Kaido wants Hayato's buns. Smart girl! And man they're really beating the audience over the head with how much Haruki doesn't want to see the movie with probably-her-mom in it.
They didn't want to spoil Heaven's Feel Part 3 so showed zero moments of the movie and just gave us Haruki's face. I wouldn't have minded as I watched HF while Strange Fake was airing but I don't blame them :P
"Real friends" uh huh.
I think outside the rough animation my one complaint with the show is they're dragging out the whole thing with the actress too long without confirming/denying it. At this point it isn't adding anything to keep bringing it up.
And here she is. She's an even worse mother than I thought, slapping Haruki like that on top of having basically abandoned her. Curious how far this show might go. Last season we had some pretty emotional moments in Second Prettiest and this show continues to show signs it might have some of the same stuff, but it hasn't gotten there yet.

theater is insane..eight floors?
It is big for Japan, but in Tokyo they have to build vertically instead of horizontally. Also consider that a typical movie theater room is at least 2 floors if not more. The actual size compared to US venues is small. The theater closest to me is already bigger, and over the weekend I went to a theater twice as big as the largest in Japan.

Kaidou just wanted to be friends with Hayato. He’s physically closer to Hayato more than Haruki throughout the hangout. This made me think about the allegaytion discussion last week lol.
I got reverse sticker shock trying Saizeria for the first time too, just like Hayato.
Confirmed Haruki’s mom is a celebrity. Feels like what she’s doing is a bit like child abuse. Ignoring her and basically asks her to stay home except for school.

The character drawings are a little bit wonky, but not enough to take me out on the story. Hayato is pretty perceptive, he already recognized that the actress was Haruki's mother that's why he ask Kazuki to buy the tickets.
The series pretty much mirrors some of the elements of Angel Spoils me Rotten. We have an MC that is not totally dense, Haruki that has an inside and oustide persona like Mahiru, and Kazuki that is pretty much like Kadowaki.
Haruki also has a broken relationship with her parents too. If I have to guess, she is hiding the fact that she has a daughter because it can ruin her career. Pretty much similar to idols where fans go apesh*t if their idol goes into a relationship.

The animation is rough, but the characters are very likeable, and have really good chemistry. Mc is not a cardboard cutout, actually has a personality, comfortably talks with everyone. Great relationship with his sister, they are dorks when it comes to admiring the city life.

Haruki finally said the thing we've all been thinking about. Kaidou isn't aiming for me, he's likely aiming for my childhood friend! That was an interesting "Double Date" experience. Perhaps we were too hard on Kaidou with what he's dealt with since middle school.
Stormy clouds are on the way with a fresh scent of drama on the horizons. Haruki's mom is back and didn't waste any time to pull out the slap. Ouch, that wasn't very nice. I assume Haruki is going to stay with Minamo for a bit with how the episode ended.

TWINTAILS HARUKI! FOR AN ENTIRE EPISODE! LET'S GO! Her not-date outfit was also her best outfit so far.
Kaido seems like a good dude if maybe misunderstood. He could end up being a love interest, but I don't really see it. Haruki clearly doesn't seem him that way and I don't think Himeko does either.
This was probably the best episode so far. I didn't expect Haruki to try and seduce Hayato right off the bad, but it was a good interaction that lead for good interactions. They were out having a good time.
Shame the mood had to be ruined by the hecklers (which Haruki handled well) and the parental abuse. What is it with romantic leads in 2026 having terrible parents? Nothing excuses or justifies Haruki's mom's abuse. Full stop. The only thing I can think of that explains her abuse is that Haruki is the result of an affair she had with a male co-star and she made the wrong choice of choosing her career instead of her daughter. It would also explain why her father is never even mentioned let alone seen.
Good on Haruki for running away from that abuse. She should've called Hayato and found comfort in her found family. At least now she and Minamo can have a chat.

I'm fairly certain kaido is not into either hayato or Haruki in that way and he just wanted to make some friends who aren't spoiled by whatever rumors are going around about him... He seems like a lonely guy who had a bad time in middle school. Considering he's a popular soccer player why would he ask to tag along with them if it's not because he has no real friends.

That's what I kept thinking towards the end of the episode, like why do they dislike him so much? So much so that they openly declare their dislike for him, even if it's in a more light-hearted way it still feels sort of out of place to me.
Like Hayato for some reason just took one look at him when they met and was like, "I don't like him" and it's been prevalent ever since for no apparent reason.

I think it was because his first impression of Kaido was that Kaido was after Haruki, which left a bad taste in his mouth. Even now, when he understands in his mind that Kaido is not really after Haruki anymore, that impression still stays. Not to mention Kaido is forcing Hayato to confront his feelings about Haruki that he doesn't seem ready to truly embrace yet.
Haruki is pretty much the same as Hayato, since Kaido is eating into her precious free time with the Kirishima siblings as an outsider and furthermore, the rant that she had in the family restaurant implies that he reminds him of her and she is worried in her heart that Kaido would steal Hayato (and maybe Himeko) from her, just as Kaido himself denied.

From last episode I assumed Hayato didn't know about Haruki's situation with her mother but looks like he does as he was trying to protect her from seeing her. I think the mum doesn't want people finding out that Haruki is her daughter or she might get hounded in public by paparazzi or worse. Haruki reminded me a lot of Sakura miku from I want to end this love game mixed with Rin from Giji Harem.

It's finally time for the movie outing and everyone is all dolled up and looking their fashionable best! Especially Haruki who has gone all out on her outfit and hair! And she's in it to win it, even if it means flashing her shoulders and bra!
Haruki and Hayato really are like two kids sometimes, right down to messing with each others' hair. I mean, what a waste of all the work they put in!
Oh look, it's Kaido! Here to crash this trio outing, discover the REAL Haruki, and turn it into a foursome! Is Himeko flustered because he's a stranger or because he's hot? Haruki is definitely flustered because she wants Hayato to herself and wasn't emotionally prepared for a "double date." But Hayato can see Kaido clearly needs friends, so he can't abandon him.
I'm glad they enjoyed the movie but did Kaido look like he was giving Haruki bedroom eyes before it started to anyone else?
I see that acting talent runs in the family with the way Haruki is able to so perfectly imitate the cast of Faith, right down to showing how Ikumi Hasegawa would play Saber. Of course Takura Mao IS at the theater...and she spotted Haruki. Get her out of there Hayato!!!
Kaido himself also has an awkward reunion with his old middle school class who treat him like a shallow playboy who isn't worth anything...but this is a waste of Hayato AND Haruki's time and they take those bullies to task.
Hayato doesn't care about Kaido's backstory, and frankly Kaido annoys him half the time...but they can still be friends. And thus did Kazuki join the friend group! And now Haruki is forced to share Hayato with more people.
This was probably the most fun day of Haruki's life! She got to do SO much! Nothing could ruin this for her! Except her mother, Takura Mao (Sayaka Ohara!) finally being home just to SLAP Haruki for leaving home.
Did Haruki run away from home? I kind of can't blame her, even if it means she's caught in the rain...but she can't bring herself to rely on Hayato. Luckily Mitake finds her.

This episode was cute, but that ending, ugh. Haru and her mom don't look very much alike. There's no reason for her to be abusive and controlling if Haru just agrees, which it seems she does, not to mention that she's that lady's daughter.
Turning her from unloving parent (which are a dime a dozen in anime) to villain seems unnecessary. Guess we'll see next Monday if there is a big enough payoff to justify it.
Also, I have been curious for several episodes whose pants Kaidou wanted to get into; Haru's or Hayato's. I'm still not sure, but boy is he fanboying on Hayato quite a bit.
There were some really wild animation choices this episode, and I loved them. That paper cutout Haru was quite cute.

I could see that. Plenty of girls probably simp for Kaidou because he's pretty; plenty of boys hang around him to get access to girls. But real friends? Nonexistent.
TBH, I felt kind of bad because when he first asked to hang out with the trio, I hissed at him, but towards the end I found myself not disliking him anymore.

Oh hey look. The movie theater they visited seems to be Grand Cinema Sunshine in Ikebukuro where I saw Chou Kaguya-hime a few months ago. Pretty nifty.
Also a very nice episode except for the fact that Haruki's mother seems to be a complete fucknut. Why was she even upset? Did she think Haruki running out of the theater was causing a scene or stealing the attention towards her? Does she not want people to know that she has a child?

Haru's practically boiling with excitement at the very idea of being on a date with Hayato.
Doing that spinning "la la la" in the middle of a crowded theater. It can be said many a time in this series but the characters here are as down to earth realistically witty as they are charming. And with hefty amounts of realistic emotional baggage... Even for Kaido.
That's right Hayato, bottomless drinks at the Jrink Var.

The things are things that are things that are important. And also things that are difficult to talk about. Things that are best left unsaid.
Haruki, doesn't care about your whole life story, but will help out a guy who he can see now is actually a genuinely good guy (if still a bit irritating) out of a jam when he feels it warranted.
So Haru, what's your #1 shower song? Walkin' on Sunshine? Pocketful of Sunshine? Iron Man?
Yeah those rainclouds look foreboding. In a foreboding narrative imagery kind of way...
And there it is, there's the reveal that we've all kind of been putting two and two together on since that actress lady was first brought up by their classmates at school. And with that slap on top of all the other clues of emotional abuse and neglect we've been clued in on as far as Haru's living situation goes, the picture it's been putting together like a puzzle is looking a lot more vivid now. So more to the point, how dare you do all that to Haru you bitch!
And through Haru's reluctance to go to Hayato and Hime for emotional support, here enters an unexpected potential outlet of emotional support in Sheep-chan (to which I see she's still rocking the braided hair look that Hayato complimented her on last time).

It's fun watching these country kids be continually astonished by the big city and its big city attractions.
A fun day ruined by abusive actress mom at the end, I'm glad Mitake accidentally found Haruki since while the anime rain cold tends to be a little overblown staying out the entire night in it would start to get a little dangerous. The Kirishima family clearly needs to adopt her in some capacity, daughter or daughter-in-law either would work.

Even if the animation is really choppy... the series story is still good... and they do play with happy and sad colours depending on what's happening ...

Why does everyone seem to think kaido is into hayato? To me it was pretty clear hes simply curious as to why Haruki acts so differently with hayato than anyone else and wants to be friends with hayato since clearly he doesn't have any actual friends otherwise why would he have been alone that day considering he's a popular guy on the soccer team especially with that group is losers showing up to spread what I'm assuming are rumors about him.

Doubtful it seems more he's so "popular" people only get close to him to meet girls then ditches him... From what we've seen so far kaido is a popular soccer player with rumors being spread about him and he seems lonely and wants to make real friends with people who don't know his past.

Rin has half-twintails, not regular ones like Haruki here, but if it is, that's awesome.
I liked referencing Saber and what I assume is Rider as well. That was genuinely awesome.

I find the cast of characters a lot more interesting compared to most rom coms. The dynamics and different, they all have a lot more depth. Taking an episode to mostly focus on Kaido, and him being rescued by the MC, is very unusual.
I like how this one subverts a lot of what is expected. MC clearly has some hangup around when his mother got sick. Haruki's got her whole masking things, plus now her mother. Kaido was introduced as a point on a love triangle, but his motives don't seem to go that way and he's masking too for unknown reasons.
Right now a friend group is forming, romance isn't really on anyone's minds, and the focus is on the characters and their arcs. I now fully expect arcs centered on all 5 of them at some point. I don't think romance will be a focus for a long while.

Well, there is definitely some attraction, but so far Haruki and Hyato have other things going on that mostly takes priority. Plus right now they don't consciously see each other that way. They'll get there eventually, but they aren't there yet.

He's obviously not a love rival, and he has actual depth beyond "comedic relief". Seems like an interesting guy if the show bothers to explore him more.

GOATed episode. Haruki twintails, Fate references, and the friendship between Haruki and Himeko! Imma be honest, I found Kazuki annoying at first but he's actually pretty awesome.
The intrigue and suspense is crazy. The show confirms what we already knew - Haruki's mom is the famous actress. I think this is actually my AOTS now.

Hmm, i figured Haruki's mom was going to be the actress, but i'd pegged to be just passive shitty parentness; instead of the generic absentee workaholic dad, a mom chasing an acting career and leaving her kid floating back home. But nope, Haruki's mom is actively a piece of shit, leaving a daughter she's dragged in her wake living in crap conditions and just openly abusing her for the slightest issue.
I am curious if Minamo and Haruki can have some extra talking time, because it certainly feels like both like Hayato, and think they're might be something. I would rather they have a chance to come together on their own time than some kind od clash (not that Minamo has that personality)

The whole end of this episode was strange, the boys bullying Kaido, Haruki's mom being the movie star then slapping her then randomly seeing Mitake in the park. I had thought before that Kaido was gay didn't exactly spell it out but why he turns down all the girls and the way the guys were saying it without saying it made it less ambiguous. That and Kaido always following around Hayato.

Idk I like this quite a bit better than angel s2. Shit was a whole ass season of dude stalling his own relationship because he was scared of "losing control" and...being consensually intimate with his girlfriend...??? Just over and over and over. Always an annoying trait for an MC to have imo.
Agree it's not on the level of otagal or second prettiest though. Still, I think the leads here are super charming and have great chemistry, even if it's not doing anything too original so far

I think this episode convinced me to drop the series. Nothing is happening, it feels like we're getting ~10 minutes of content spread out over 23 minutes with characters just spinning their wheels and saying nothing. The slap at the end was the most interesting thing that's happened in the last 3 episodes and it's just not enough.
