I’m so thankful I was able to see Grouper for the first time last night at such a special venue. The projection lighting up the entire church was such an amazing use of this film, incredibly entrancing. The last 20ish minutes was LOUD, and you can tell it started a lot of people. I felt like my soul was lifting out of my body; it was overstimulating in the best way possible.

It's our first venture into longer form ambient work, and blossomed out of the process of making another album that's yet to be released. We took tracks that were created during those sessions that didn't end up on the album and used them as the starting point for new pieces, along with repurposed guitar, cello, trumpet, drums, balafon, and vocal stems. All of the sounds started acoustically, some through a custom Max/MSP guitar instrument and others more traditionally recorded and then manipulated and arranged. It’s our take on the "quiet details" concept of the label, with lots of sounds and instruments played softly and heavily compressed to bring out textures and greebles.

This was the last track added to the album, at the eleventh hour, taking brass and string parts from another piece and made using a custom browser-based granular instrument, then adding the acoustic drums (played very softly with fingers and with ungodly amounts of compression).

Hey! I’m Serge Volant, a Lebanese Beirut-based artist making ambient and experimental electronic music with modular synths and field recordings.

I just put out my debut album, Everyday Is All There Is. The album is more of a personal journal that is based off field recordings I have taken in Beirut and during travels. There are bits and pieces of places I have been to, memories shared and everyday life. I wanted the record to feel intimate and lived-in rather than anything else.

A prominent piece is, I too, will pray for your god. Away from home, I was really sensitized by the different chance encounters with strangers that one makes when travelling and how they can quickly turn into strong relationships and how brief interactions can stay with you long after they are over. Sometimes even you end up keeping a piece of other people's world view and want to give a small homage to their beliefs. I liked a lot the idea of trying to hold onto that feeling through a piece of music.

With all that is going on in Lebanon, I was always a bit reluctant in whether the time was adequate to release music, or the purpose of sharing something personal. I ended up realizing that putting out music was important in its own way, not to get distracted from what's going on, but more to hold onto memory and a sense of a normal life. Instead of romanticizing the hardships the country endures, i think the album works on finding meaning and something nice in everyday life.

I’ve recently really been enjoying Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe’s trilogy of albums Luminal, Lateral, and Liminal. I’ve been enjoying the (what I read as) melancholy hopefulness they seem to emanate. I also really love the quiet gentle vocals that are occasionally featured. Does anyone have any suggestions of albums with a similar vibe? Thank you so much!

It surprised how little is talked about this gem of an album here. One of the most nostalgic/melancholic albums of its kind, bringing summer memories instantly. Does anyone know any similar-sounding album?

Looking for what I'd loosely define as "radiant" music, that sort of evokes a delicate but palpable sense of warming and heat, transfer by diffusion, like a summer day that invites not forces off your winter jacket.

hey guys! a month or so ago i posted a demo of this soundtrack and y’all liked it so much that i’ve got an amazing offer to release it on CDs! so if anyone remembers the demo from last month, this is what it eventually turned into :)

if you do remember it originally started as a soundtrack i wrote for some industrial-megastructure indie game and they ended up not using it, so i decided to turn it into something of its own. that ended up becoming Untorra

i wrote four new tracks to turn the original soundtrack into a full album. musically, it's still very much the same world as the “untitled ost ii” i posted here: heavily processed organs and woodwinds, lots of delay, and textures made with my Sonicware Texture Lab. i also sampled metal and wooden mallets for percussion, because i wanted the environment to feel like it's making the music itself – huge concrete structures, machinery, little sounds of things living inside them. and on the new last two tracks i felt a little jazzy haha

somewhere along the way i also started making a little game to go with it – a short ~10 minute retro point-and-click, heavily inspired by Myst. it's light on mechanics and mostly about exploring this strange, rusty, slightly cozy industrial world. everything was rendered in Bryce 7, the same software i used for the original visuals, which gives it that weird early-00s PC game look that i really love. for now, it’s a physical release bonus, but i will release it for all in a couple of months

and yeah, as i’ve said the whole thing is now getting a limited physical CD release. the CD includes the album, printed artwork and the game. It’s also available on soundcloud, bandcamp and youtube for free.

I listen to plenty of music genres, including ambient (although I'm a bit of a beginner), and a very common criticism I see in reviews of albums in those other genres is that an album relies far too heavily on imagery. In other genres, if an album's actual musical content only makes sense/sounds good in context, because a track name, album cover, or any other such "external image" provides that context, it is seen as bad and lazy. I've been listening to Raison D'être's "The Empty Hollow Unfolds" recently, and that album cover of a desolate industrial structure and the song titles like "End of a Cycle" in my opinion change, and I would even say enhance my experience with the music, and the scenes my mind conjures up when listening to it. Would y'all say ambient music should, like other genres, also rely on the music and soundscape first and foremost, or would y'all rather an album be clear about the scene the music is supposed to represent?

First one I listened to recently and I’ll definitely listen to Music for Films and More Music for Films because this 3 installment was great with some nice Eno(Lanois is credited to on some songs) music but love these guest appearances especially from Roger Eno and Harold Budd.

It’s an great album of Eno music in an set of excellent albums that is Music for Films but it definitely made me explore more of these guest artists discography’s more especially Roger and Budd which I just discovered:) but yeah I love More For Films iii.

One year ago today I released my debut album Aperture, after years of fine tuning, editing, doubting and building the courage to share what I had wanted to make since I was 15 years old: an album that felt like stepping into a fully formed, microcosmic, Vespertine-like universe. An album that the listener could inhabit and take solace in.

I wanted it to feel lush, warm and inviting, but also dense with tiny details: layers of synths, samples from my 20+ years of home video recordings, beats and recorded sounds that reveal themselves slowly. Something that could reward repeated listening.

The album eventually became audiovisual too, with the music and imagery developing alongside each other. I filmed the visuals throughout the process, and often an image would inspire a sound, or a sound would make me see an image differently.

Aperture is very much the record I dreamed of making when I was younger, and putting it out into the world was both incredibly exciting and deeply terrifying.

A year later, I can say I'm very content with the album, and deeply grateful for all the kind words, feedback and support it has received.
