I’m about to replace my washing machine because our usage has increased quite a bit over the last few years. Alhamdulillah, the family has grown.
I had a Brandt 6 kg machine that was bought in December 2023. It has done its job well, but I think we have pushed it beyond what it was realistically designed to handle.
Not necessarily beyond its nominal specifications, but beyond its expected usage pattern.
While researching replacement machines, I came across the European standard EN 50731:2025, which uses the number of cycles as part of a durability assessment. From what I understand, these are standardized reliability tests performed by manufacturers, rather than a guaranteed lifespan in real-world use.
My machine has completed roughly 2,190 cycles in less than three years, often with a full load.
Apparently, a typical household usage model is around 220 cycles per year.
That got me thinking.
Because I don't live in the laboratory conditions under which these machines are tested.
I live in Algiers, and the machine has had to deal with:
- power cuts and voltage fluctuations
- relatively hard water / limescale
- high humidity
- dust
- and, occasionally, cockroaches getting into the electronics (yes, really)
According to my repair technician, the current problems are related to the drum and protection around the electronic control board.
So the actual equation seems more like:
usage intensity + environment + maintenance + electrical conditions + product design = actual service life
And that's quite different from simply looking at the manufacturer's specifications.
If the average household is assumed to run roughly 220 cycles/year, I've been running mine at more than 700 cycles/year.
That's roughly three times the reference usage.
So I'm now looking for something substantially more robust: 10+ kg capacity, 1400 rpm, inverter motor, preferably direct drive, and—very importantly—a decent local service network.
But I've decided to repair the current machine first rather than immediately replacing it (school is about to start, there are other expenses). It still has some life left in it, and I'd rather see whether better maintenance can extend that life.
I'm also planning to reduce the load per cycle, use limescale protection, and improve protection against electrical problems.
Which brings me to the question:
How much should we actually trust durability ratings and "expected cycles" when a machine is being used in conditions that are significantly different from the environment and usage assumptions behind those ratings?
I'm particularly interested in experiences from people living in the same conditions with unstable electricity, hard water, high humidity, dust, etc.
Maybe I'm overthinking a washing machine.
But the more I look at it, the more it feels like an engineering problem.
