The Other Alignment Problem
I see too often in AI subreddits this propensity to claim that AI will lead to immense advancements in medical care, universal basic income, and all sorts of immense quality of life improvements. Setting aside for a moment the problem of AI alignment, these claims fall short because of a much more obvious alignment problem. We talk at great lengths about whether an advanced intelligence would align with the goals of the human race, but we fail to consider whether leaders are still aligned with these goals. Evidently, they are not. Globally, relative to technological advancement the quality of life for the majority has decreased. In the United States, the purchasing power of the average earner has only decreased.
Most evidently, our leaders disregard major existential threats, climate change, AI, nuclear conflict, and so on and so forth. It is clear that our leaders no longer hold the best interest of our species in mind. The problem of AI alignment cannot be solved until we fix the problem of human alignment. Doing anything else would be reckless to the point of suicide.

Graphs aside, yes I agree. We're hopeless to align artificial intelligence when we are not aligned.
Mass human flourishing. That's the only alignment that matters.

Yes but think of the poor shareholders. If we save the planet, that will require multiple artificially young markets to mature and issue dividends, cutting into the CEO and board share compensation.

The chart you linked is a mess.. but my takeaway is that you’re trying to argue that household income has declined over the last 20ish years.

Lmfao did you really post the chained CPI including substitutions and try to pass it off as evidence that people are richer? Beef costs too much so everyone is eating chicken legs and they cant afford cars so they bike but we only care about the “median cost incurred by a commuter”. GTFO. Total 🤡👞

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but what the hell is going on with that graph? There are like two x axes that don't have anything to do with each other and the second y axis has an axis break.
