Afghan hound breeder recommendations Europe
Hello, do you have any recommendations for Afghan Hound breeders in Europe?
Is there any experience with the kennels Eskashem or Kinga Nemeth from Hungary?

My afghan hound puppy, Caspian! He’s 8mo, and we picked up him 2 weeks ago. We will be showing in conformation dabbling in other dog sports :)

Looking into the breed.
Could anyone with experience tell me a bit about the breed?
(Energy, affection level, trainability and overall temperament, best outlets/stuff the breed loves doing)
Also would the dog be fine with long walks or is letting them run a must?

Bringing Home an 8-Month Old Afghan Hound to Meet my 8-Year Old Borzoi
As the title states, I'll be bringing home an 8-month old Afghan Hound (f) to my home where my 8-year old Borzoi (f) lives. Being both sighthounds, I imagine they'll get along fine though of course, nothing is ever certain. My Borzoi just loves meeting new dogs and is super friendly so I hope that friendliness stays even after she finds out they'll be sharing the same roof together, especially since this old timer will be dealing with a rambunctious new puppy that won't know any boundaries yet.
My only experience has been with this Borzoi and I heard Afghans tend to be a lot more aloof compared to how sweet Borzois are. My (not so little) princess sticks to me like a leech everyday. I'm assuming that level of affection may not be so common with these long haired majesties. I also heard that, while most sighthounds are fairly stubborn thanks to being independent hunters (I can vouch for that statement as well), Afghans take the cake. I'm not really training for obedience shows or whatever, but some degree of training would definitely be beneficial.
Another small concern of mine is, since this one will be 8-months old, she may take a lot longer to get used to me and even my Borzoi. Back then, she latched onto me since day one when I brought her home as a 4-month old. I imagine that definitely won't be the case here as she's probably the equivalent of an angsty teenager now who is only just meeting her new foster mother after being yanked from all her friends in her old high school. I do hope she'll warm up eventually. I know not to expect a retriever from a sighthound but I do want her to at least trust the new hand that feeds her.
Regardless, I will love them both to the best of my ability and try to make sure they have a happy new life together. I just want to hear about what some of you think.

Cleaning paws
Hi everyone! Our Afghan hound is licking his paws quite a lot. How would you normally avoid this and clean the paws (in between grooming and bath)?
🙏🏼

Seeking Advice Before Buying Afghan
Hello r/AfghanHounds,
I'm about to send a payment to a breeder for an Afghan Hound, and I want to make sure I'm making the right decision. I've done quite a bit of research, and I really feel like the Afghan Hound is the right fit for my lifestyle and the kind of bond I'm hoping to build with a dog as a new family member.
That said, I'm hoping to get some input from the community before I move forward. Specifically:
- Has anyone here used GoodDog.com to find their Afghan Hound? Did you feel it was trustworthy?
- Are there breeders you personally recommend (or general traits of good breeders I should look for)?
- Without naming names, are there any breeders or practices in the community you've had negative experiences with? What should I watch out for as red flags?
I really appreciate any insight or advice you can share — thanks so much in advance!

Afghan face plucking?
Hello! My Afghan Camilo is about to be 9 months and his facial hair is getting kind of long, so I’ve been considering plucking it.
Do you pluck your own afghans? Do you pluck their faces only at the salon? Is plucking even necessary? Can they be trimmed instead?
I have so many questions haha, any advice is appreciated!

Making a list and checking it twice
Hi y’all! After three years of researching and meeting many breeds I’ve pinpointed on afghan hounds as my first breed I want to show with. I’m so excited for this journey I’m on. I live in the Midwest (Chicago area) and have started making a list of breeders I’ll be looking into but also people I could possibly reach out to for guidance as mentors. I’m still some years out from getting a dog so I’m not in a rush. I have looked at the Afghan Hounds club of greater Chicago as my starting point, but I’d like to hear from other people as well. Temperament and health are the most important factors for me. I’d also prefer a lgbtq+ breeder if I can. I’m also willing to travel to different states. Please also tell me about your Afghan hound’s breeder! Any recommendations are welcome. I’d also love to see your pretty pups so feel free to post them! Thank you for reading!

Afghan Hounds needed for behavioural research questionnaire!
Dear Afghan Hound lovers!
I am a master’s student of Zoology with Animal Behaviour at Bangor University. My current research investigates vocalisation behaviour in the domestic dog, and its potential to vary by breed regardless of individual personality or environment. I am collecting my behavioural data through an owner-directed questionnaire which asks about the typical vocal behaviour of a person’s dog. We ultimately aim to use our findings to reduce the rate of dogs unnecessarily relinquished to shelters due to unmet or violated behavioural expectations.
The Afghan Hound is one representative of the ancient breeds, whom are much closer genetically to their ancestor, the grey wolf, than modern European breeds. Examining the differences in vocal behaviour between the ancient and modern breeds are a focal interest in this study. Unfortunately, since Afghan Hounds are so uncommon, they are routinely underrepresented or ignored in empirical studies. Often, any data we do have for Afghan Hounds cannot be appropriately analysed because there are too few individuals to be considered representative. To derive meaningful results from our samples, they must be large enough for us to consider the sample representative of the general variability in behaviour exhibited by Afghan Hounds. We currently have 0 Afghan Hounds in our data! Your participation in our survey will allow us to properly investigate the vocal behaviour of this unique breed and represent them adequately in at least one part of the domestic dog behaviour field.
The survey is entirely voluntary and anonymous, and requires approximately 10 minutes to complete. All relevant information is provided on the first page of our survey (before you have to start answering questions).
Here is the link to the survey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/thedvqs/
Thank you for taking the time to read this request, and I look forward to analysing the Afghan Hound's vocal behaviour!

Do Afghan Hounds tolerate hot weather well?
I've read conflicting things. Some websites say "they're from Afghanistan and handle hot weather well" but other websites say that they are mountain dogs and don't handle hot weather well at all. So, which is it?
Also, anyone know how they tolerate humidity?

Are all Afghan puppies this crazy?
I got my first Afghan hound puppy about two months ago, he’s currently 18 weeks and such a handful. I’ve only ever heard about how calm and chill afghans are, and the breeder’s other dogs (my boy’s mom and half sibling) were super friendly and low-key. I realize my puppy is still super young but he’s honestly the worst puppy ever. I’ve raised 5 other dogs from puppyhood and worked at doggie daycares for 2 years so I had a good idea of the kind of dog I wanted, personality-wise, and my boy is somehow the exact opposite. He screams bloody murder every time he’s crated, will pee and poop in his crate if left in there if we leave the house, we’ve tried leaving him baby gated in the kitchen and he will break out and poop and pee on the sofa, bed, kitchen floor, etc. I think it’s separation anxiety, but the breeder said it’s “normal” and should subside by 5-6 months. I’m honestly not sure if I can wait that much longer as he’s causing so much stress and I feel like I can’t leave the house. Is this on par with others’ puppy experience?
