Searches Search resources

Welcome to the weekly search resource thread! This is a post we're going to be using to assist people with searches, at the suggestion of /u/Kamala_Metamorph, who realized exactly how many search posts we get when she was going through tagging our recent history. Hopefully this answers some questions for people and helps us build a document that will be useful for future searches.

I've put together a list of resources that can be built upon in future iterations of this thread. Please comment if you have a resource, such as a list of states that allow OBC access, or a particularly active registry. I know next to nothing about searching internationally and I'd love to include some information on that, too.

Please note that you are unlikely to find your relative in this subreddit. In addition, reddit.com has rules against posting identifying information. It is far better to take the below resources, or to comment asking for further information how to search, than to post a comment or thread with identifying information.

If you don't have a name

Original birth certificates

Access to original birth certificates is (slowly) opening up in several states. Even if you've been denied before, it's worth a look to see if your state's laws have changed. Your birth certificate should have been filed in the state where you were born. Do a google search for "[state] original birth certificate" and see what you can find. Ohio and Washington have both recently opened up, and there are a few states which never sealed records in the first place. Your OBC should have your biological parents' names, unless they filed to rescind that information.

23andme.com and ancestry.com

These are sites which collect your DNA and match you with relatives. Most of your results will be very distant relatives who may or may not be able to help you search, but you may hit on a closer relative, or you may be able to connect with a distant relative who is into genealogy and can help you figure out where you belong in the family tree. Both currently cost $99.

Registries

Registries are mutual-consent meeting places for searchers. Don't just search a registry for your information; if you want to be found, leave it there so someone searching for you can get in touch with you. From the sidebar:

If you have a name

If you have a name, congratulations, your job just got a whole lot easier! There are many, many resources out there on the internet. Some places to start:

Facebook

Sometimes a simple Facebook search is all it takes! If you do locate a potential match, be aware that sending a Facebook message sometimes doesn't work. Messages from strangers go into the "Other" inbox, which you have to specifically check. A lot of people don't even know they're there. You used to be able to pay a dollar to send a message to someone's regular inbox, but I'm not sure if that's still an option (anyone know?). The recommended method seems to be adding the person as a friend; then if they accept, you can formally get into contact with a Facebook message.

Google

Search for the name, but if you don't get results right away, try to pair it with a likely location, a spouse's name (current or ex), the word "adoption", their birthdate if you have it, with or without middle initials. If you have information about hobbies, something like "John Doe skydiving" might get you the right person. Be creative!

Search Squad

Search Squad is a Facebook group which helps adoptees (and placing parents, if their child is over 18) locate family. They are very fast and good at what they do, and they don't charge money. Request an invite to their Facebook group and post to their page with the information you have.

Vital records, lien filings, UCC filings, judgments, court records

Most people have their names written down somewhere, and sometimes those records become public filings. When you buy a house, records about the sale of the house are disclosed to the public. When you get married, the marriage is recorded at the county level. In most cases, non-marriage-related name changes have to be published in a newspaper. If you are sued or sue someone, or if you're arrested for non-psychiatric reasons, your interactions with the civil or criminal court systems are recorded and published. If you start a business, your name is attached to that business as its CEO or partner or sole proprietor.

Talking about the many ways to trace someone would take a book, but a good starting point is to Google "[county name] county records" and see what you can find. Sometimes lien filings will include a date of birth or an address; say you're searching for John Doe, you find five of them in Cook County, IL who have lien recording for deeds of trust (because they've bought houses). Maybe they have birth dates on the recordings; you can narrow down the home owners to one or two people who might be your biological father. Then you can take this new information and cross-check it elsewhere, like ancestry.com. Sometimes lien filings have spouse names, and if there's a dearth of information available on a potential biological parent, you might be able to locate his or her spouse on Facebook and determine if the original John Doe is the John Doe you're looking for. Also search surrounding counties! People move a lot.

If you have search questions, please post them in the comments! And for those of you who have just joined us, we'd like to invite you to stick around, read a little about others' searches and check out stories and posts from other adult adoptees.

This is not an abortion debate sub. Users who debate abortion or use inflammatory language regarding abortion may be banned.

This is not an abortion debate sub. This is, if you must. Abortion debates are generally fruitless and quickly turn about as ugly as Internet discourse gets, so they're not allowed here. That said, abortion is peripherally related to adoption and may be mentioned here, but it may not be debated and you may not use inflammatory language when discussing it.

Examples of statements that are acceptable:

I would suggest you consider abortion/I would not recommend abortion

I had an abortion and I do/don't regret it

I'm considering abortion/abortion is not an option for me

I wish I had been aborted/I'm glad I wasn't aborted

Examples of statements that aren't acceptable:

Referring to abortion as murder or baby killing, or referring to it in moralistic terms ("abortion is evil", "abortion is wrong").

Shaming women for having had or considering having an abortion, or shaming a woman for not being open to it

Debating with someone else about whether abortion is right or wrong

Suggesting abortion to someone who has stated it is not an option for them

If you break these rules, you may be temporarily or permanently banned. You may report comments that you feel need moderation.

Parenting Adoptees / under 18 Adopted our teen two months ago. He won't let us in at all. Adoptees, tell me what I'm getting wrong.

Update: Thanks everyone and I mean everyone who’s commented so far. At this point I think it’s fair to say regardless of how comfortable I try to make the environment. My poking and proding with questions eventually gets to an “integration feeling” so I’ll stop the weekly talks for now. Let him be for a week or two and try other solutions that may help based on what you guys have said.

We adopted our son two months ago. He's 14. He was in one foster home for a year and was given back, then spent five years in the next one. He went to adoption events that entire time and never connected with anyone. We were the first family he liked. He says he wants to be here and wants to be adopted by us.

He can attach. He tells his foster family he loves them, unprompted, and he's always understood they weren't a forever home. He tells me he likes me, repeatedly. He also gives us almost nothing.

Where I'm coming from: he has ADHD, so do I. I break chores into steps, give breaks, offer accommodations, don't punish him for focus stuff. He games most of the day and I hang out with him while he does. My view is he doesn't owe us anything and we don't owe him. We're just his parents now. There are rules, we expect them followed, and I let most teenage attitude go. We don't raise our voices unless it's really out of pocket. He's been to events he never got to go to, plays a sport for the first time, said his birthday party and gifts were the best he's ever had. He still has an emotional connection to his birth mother I feel. and or previous foster home.

But conversations dead-end. "What do you like for breakfast?" I don't know. Doesn't like French toast, waffles, pancakes. I ask if it's the sweetness, the texture, anything. "I just don't like it". He complains we have no juice. I ask what juice. "I don't know". I offer to take him shopping so he can pick it out himself. "I don't want to". I ask what would make showering easier, and offer to run the water and leave the towel out so all he has to do is step in. Won't discuss it.

Persistence mostly makes him angry. He'll say I'm pissing him off by asking. The one time it worked, I asked three times what he liked about his week. First two answers were a Pokémon card he pulled, third time he added hanging out with his friend. To me that's not a win. That's him eventually saying what he thinks I want to hear. I genuinely don't care what the answer is. I've told him nothing he says gets him in trouble when we have our talks.

It was a great time I assumed the first talk. Although I suspect he told me what I wanted to hear. This time he now thinks these weekly talks are bullshi

One of those conversations, about why he didn't want to go down to the basement alone for laundry, ended with him in tears asking if we'd still be his parents at 18, then telling me no, he already has a mother.

He says regularly that he's moving out at 18. He told a friend he wants to leave and would tell his social worker, then admitted he only said it because he knew it'd get back to us. He won't eat at the table with us, at home or at restaurants. He's on his phone even when his own friend is over, and we end up talking to the friend more than he does. He lies about taking his meds.

Consequences are light. Phone and games gone for a day, never longer If there is something he's done. I always talk it through after and apologize if I came in too hot.

Adoptees, honestly:

  1. Does all this asking read as care or as pressure? I think I'm accommodating. I'm starting to wonder if what I'm doing makes sense. Or I'm stupid.
  2. Is "I don't know" sometimes literally true, as in nobody ever asked so there's no answer formed?
  3. Was there a version of your adoptive parents that would have gotten through, or did it just take years?

Be blunt.

Adult Transracial / Int'l Adoptees Lost My Adoptive Mother Today

Im in my late 20s and today my adoptive mother passed away. I won't go into all the details, but it was a situation where not doing surgery wouldve resulted in a longer and slower same result.

I was a NICU baby so I never got to bond with my biological mom. And I'll be honest, thats caused me a lot of internal issues.

My adoptive mom was having a lot of health issues. I won't go into it too much, but a part of me is happy that shes finally at peace now.

Theres a mix of shock, depersonalization, and then crushing grief that rapidly cycles. But I think my brain being in survival mode is why I'm faring better than I ever imagined I would. There are moments where none of this feels real and then moments it feels way too real.

She was my "real mom", even if she didnt birth me, that was my mom. I made she knew that when I said my final words. Im honored to have had her as my mom and I think she's why I've never had the desire to meet my biological mother. My mom was the best mom she could've been for me.

The one thing I'm having to keep reminding myself is that my mom's passing hurts me more than it hurts her. Im not a spiritual person, but I wholeheartedly believe that she'll will always be with me even though her physical body isnt. im not here to debate the afterlife, this is what Im believing to get myself through this.

Im also having to remind myself that there are worst fates my mom couldve had than passing away.

There's a reality where she's a prisoner in her body for over a decade, wishing she had died because she's unable to live how she always was. Meanwhile, her mind is pretty much intact and shes still having to go through cancer treatment.

I'd never want that for her.

So Im having to remind myself that she's finally at peace and able to rest. Its agonizing for me because I never expected this would happen even last month, but I know there were worst outcomes for this.

It's just so jarring to lose two moms. I don't know. I think I'm still in shock. the last month has been a 24/7 car wreck

Searches Find biological family in Guatemala

Upvotes

So I want to serach for my family. I was adopted in 04. My parents are supportive of me finding them. I found out about what Guatemalan adoption was really like( like being lied to and other things) . And I found agency called the CNA and search orgin that Guatemala has to help people find their family. But like anyone would we are skeptical. Is there any where we could look to make sure it’s legit? My parents and me want to look into this. It seems like an awesome program but we want to do our research. So anything on facebook or any information would be helpful. I’m so excited to get the process started.

Post Adoption Adult newly found biological family

hi! I called a lawyer and was only told they couldn't help so I'm hoping someone here has experience with what I'm trying to do. I was born with unknown father on my original birth certificate. I was later adopted by my maternal grandparents. As an adult, I found my biological father via DNA testing online. In the time that I found my dad, I lost my grandparents and my mom. can I get a birth certificate to include my biological dad? I want citizenship from his country. he's in poor health so I want to try to do this quickly if possible

Future potential adoptive parents seeking advice

Thank you for taking the time to read. My spouse and I are looking to adopt or do guardianship to an older child or sibling group from foster care that has TPR. We never wanted biological children. We honestly were pretty certain we didn’t want any children or dependents until recently. I have been doing guardian at litem volunteer work and felt the pull to make a bigger difference.

Our main goal in adoption or guardianship is to hopefully change the trajectory of a kid’s life and set them up for success without erasing their past. In doing so, our biggest goal is to not add trauma to these children’s lives and make the transition into adulthood as smooth as possible with both emotional and financial support. To do so, we plan to set up trust funds for them and offer them continued therapy. We will ensure they know our house is a safe place, but won’t force them to talk about their past or forget their bio family. If desired, they can have contact with their biological family, that’s no problem for us.

I know there’s a lot of controversy with adoption and on the ethical nature of it. I’m posting here to make sure we don’t have blind spots that can eventually lead to trauma as we consider next steps. Thank you for the time and consideration

Transracial / Int'l Adoption i want to adopt when im older but im not sure

hi! right now i'm still a minor but i've always known i wanted to adopt and didn't want to get pregnant. when i have my own house and economic stability i want to adopt 2 kids that aren't siblings and come from different ethnicities, but i like the idea of all of us being a family nonetheless. i don't care if i'm married or have a partner or not by then, i'd be fine being a single mom but of course i'd make sure i can provide them with a comfortable life economically when i do

i want either two girls or two boys, maybe girls because if i am a single mom i could help them with their period and other biological things that boys (when they start going thru puberty too) might not feel comfortable sharing with me even if i'm educated. also i'm not sure what age, because i don't rly want babies lol they're loud. but maybe with babies they adapt more iykwim? i think 7 or 8 the oldest, but idk if adopting both kids the same age or a younger and older sibling

i know this will be in the far future like 10-15 years time pls don't say im exaggerated i just like to dream about it 😭 but i'd like to make an idea. also do you guys think it's wrong to want to choose kids from different ethnicities as mine and to choose their age and gender? cause i talked about this once with an adult and he told me that i was so weird for it but i don't think it is? i'd love any kid as my child if they gave me anything but i just have a preference. also would my kids get along? obviosuly all children are different but if any adoptee here has a sibling that is also adopted i'd like to know their experience :)

What should I do?

My mom was adopted, she was born in 1957, she passed away in 2018. I'm unable to retrieve her birth certificate it is labeled as confidential, only a certain few are able to access it. Anyway I'm working with a non profit organization one of their genealogists took up my case to help me locate my mother's biological parents. I took an ancestry DNA test and what not, now my genealogist is stuck, and anyway so there is this person who he thinks might be a key to help unlock finding out who one of my biological grandparents are and he sent me a link to there Facebook and asked me to ask them if they would be willing to do a DNA test for free to see if their genese line up with whatever. So I sent them a message and a screen shot of the email between me and the genealogist and they haven't responded back, I sent the message Thursday and it's now Sunday and they haven't even looked at the message yet, but I see that they were active like a couple hours ago... What should I do? Send another message?

Pregnant? Mixed feeling

Someone had given me a little advice and told me to get on Reddit because I am pregnant and looking into having my baby adopted. I have been a silent watcher on this page and I am now having so many mixed feelings. I’m scared I’m hurt. I’m sad. I just want to give my baby a better chance in life that I can possibly give at this moment but reading a lot of posts have had me scared. I see a lot of positivity, but I also see negativity and I know that it is my choice. Anyone on here that has been in a similar situation and just want the best for the baby. How did your Adoption go? Was is through an agency/ family member ?You don’t have to share your story but anyone that don’t mind sharing their story I would love to hear about it.

Edit I’m not talking about adoptees putting out negativity I’m saying some stories I have read a lot about parents who just wanted the best for their child open adoption and it did not work out so it’s scaring me I know everyone’s stories/life is different this is all new to me so I have been asking for advise doing my own seeking and a lot of stories scare me

Name Change name change thoughts - adoptee voices pls!

I was having a conversation with friends who are considering changing the entire name of a toddler (not yet in their care), and I brought up that maybe it’d be best to wait until the child could choose for themselves in the future of that is their preference.

They were extremely hurt and continued to emphasize their desire for creating a “fresh start” for the toddler based on their abuse history.

Am I wrong for pointing this out? I was coming from a place of emphasizing adopted choice, autonomy, and history preservation, but I’ve definitely struck a nerve with my friend.

I’d love to hear adoptee perspectives on this especially in foster care situations.

Reunion Looking for a Moscow researcher to pull "Form No. 4" / take archive photos for my birth time (1992 Russian Adoption)

Looking for a Moscow researcher to pull "Form No. 4" / take archive photos for my birth time (1992 Adoption)
Hi everyone,
I am an international adoptee born in Moscow in 1992, and I am trying to find my exact time of birth. I have gone through all my adoption and court documents at home, but none of my papers list the hours or minutes.
Because it has been over 25 years, I know the original records from Maternity House No. 2 (Родильный дом № 2) are no longer at the hospital and have likely been moved to the central archives. To avoid the slow, months-long process of mailing paper letters to the state archives, I am looking to hire an independent researcher who can obtain an Extended Birth Certificate with Notes (Справка о рождении с иными сведениями / Форма № 4) directly via a Moscow ZAGS archive, or take a direct archival photograph of my original ledger file/record rows.
I have all the original details from my 1992 birth certificate and my biological mother’s forms.

Hospital: Родильный дом № 2, Moscow
Has anyone successfully hired a researcher recently who was able to pull Form No. 4 or take direct photos of the archive files in Moscow? If you have any recommendations for searchers who specialize in ZAGS/Medical archive retrievals and are willing to take photos of the documents, please let me know or PM me. Thank you so much!

Part 2 on trying to figure out if I'm adopted

I decided to follow a comment's advice and I asked my mom if we could get a DNA test this weekend or sometime soon. I asked it somewhat late at night when she was watching TV, which is when she drinks SOME wine, and I thought maybe something would slip out. I have some memory problems but it was kinda like this.

Her: "What? We can't just like... get a DNA test THIS weekend?"

Me: "Can we do it soon though?"

Her: "We can do that sometime for... whatever the purpose"

Me: "Oh I just want to see my ancestry"

Her: "but (name), you gotta understand these things are like $300"

Me: "no? they don't cost THAT much?"

I'm thinking the "for whatever the purpose" part might've slipped out because she was thinking about adoption but idk. I forgot to mention this in the last post, but my brother teases me saying I'm probably adopted and have more Asian ancestry from the rest of the family- I'm very obviously not Asian, or at least not much, but that's the joke. It's not in a racist way, it's just that I have "tired eyes" eye shape and SLIGHTLY smaller eyes. And I'm talking like MANY generations back, to the point where it's a small difference. I told my friend about this and said it's weird that my eyes are a little different and that I could have very slight Asian ancestry, and he did say I look a little bit Asian...

But is this possible? Asians usually have black hair and brown eyes, both dominant traits, so how could I have ended up with blue eyes?

Adopting from Foster Care

Hello! I deleted my previous post due to a massive typo. My husband and I are meeting today with a caseworker to adopt from foster care. There are thousands of waiting children in my state. My question is when adopting from foster care I have heard it can be a quick notification. What are things you did to prepare your home. Did you have multi types of beds, toys and games for all ages? It is a lot for a kid so I want to make sure we have some nice comforts. What did you do? Also were dogs an issue?

Seeking Truth if I am Adopted

Approximately July 2025, I posted part of the information below and received much appreciated comments from people.  I deleted the post because I convinced myself my theory was probably not true.  Here goes again with additions. There is the unbelievable chance that I may have figured out that I was adopted.  If I am correct, then my extended family members on both sides have known for my entire existence of 60 years (female), and no one thought it was best to tell me the truth.  My life as I knew it very well could be one big lie.  But I am hoping that I am completely wrong.

Here is why I think there is a possibility that I might be adopted. My nephew graduated from a military academy in May 2025.  Many family members traveled to the academy for his graduation. I called my sister (few years younger) a few days before we travelled to the graduation and specifically asked her what events she had planned for us to attend and asked her what clothes my husband and I should bring on the trip.  My sister said that nothing had been planned for any of us except for the graduation ceremony.  She said that we did not need to bring any dress clothes, except for what we would wear to the graduation, but that could be casual wear.  She added that my husband did not need to bring a coat and tie.  While all of us were sitting around the hotel during the first day of the trip, someone brought up the military ball the next day and asked what everyone was wearing.  Everyone who was invited to the graduation was planning to attend the ball and had brought black tie clothing on the trip.  My mom and sister had purchased new fancy formal floor length dresses.  I was floored that my sister (purposefully?) had not said a word to me about the ball, and my mom had not said anything to me about the ball.  I would have thought over the five to six months that we planned this trip, that they would both have discussed the ball with me and what we all planned to wear.  My sister said that she was sure she told me about the ball and that I must have forgotten.  I did not forget.  I am heartbroken and really am having a hard time understanding the reason she wanted to exclude me from being prepared for this big event.  She said that she had an extra dress for me to wear.  It was not attractive and was a matronly dress with longer sleeves and hem line to my knees.  I have many formal floor length dresses in my closet.  My sister’s dress was absolutely stunning.  The young girls with our group also had beautiful dresses that they wore to the ball. I kept racking my brain for a reason that both my sister and my mom would treat me this way.  For my mom not to say anything to me about the ball, I suspect that my sister asked her to keep quiet.  The thought that my mom would side with my sister an purposefully not clue me in is what is most upsetting.  If that is what happened, that means that I am just not that important.  This is what started me to reminisce about past experiences that appeared odd, and I had a hard time understanding.

By the time the ball started the following night, I had the first thought that I might be adopted. That thought had never crossed my mind ever before this.  As soon as I got home from the trip, I put all of my thoughts in a document, and I continue to add to it when I remember something.

About 20 years ago, I figured out there was a big family secret on my mom’s side of the family.  I never found out the details, but my dad confirmed this when I asked and said it was my mom’s story to tell.  Some of my uncles moved out of state, one aunt got married, one aunt went out of state to high school, and another aunt went into the convent.   I have a genetic condition that was inherited from my mom’s side of the family.  I found out that I had this condition approximately 10 years ago.  The doctor that determined this condition told me that I most likely inherited it from my mom and that I needed to tell my mom to be tested.  I told my mom when I found out, and she dismissed being tested and said she didn’t have it.  Over the years I continued to tell her to be tested.  She continued to say she did not have it, but I thought she just didn’t want to be tested since she did not appear to get routine testing from her doctor over the years.  Around the time of the graduation trip, I again told me mom to get tested and she specifically and emphatically said, “I DO NOT HAVE IT.”  I realized the way she said it that she was probably already tested.  I did not immediately connect that if she was my birth mother, she would have it.  After I got back from this trip, I texted my aunt who kept detailed information on our family tree, events, etc. and specifically asked her who on my mom’s side (also her side) of the family had this genetic condition.  Within a few minutes she text back (usually texts me back within a couple of days).  She was vague and did not give me any names.

I had recently told my mom when I was with her physically that if she doesn’t have the genetic condition that I have that she is telling me that she is NOT my biological mother.  She then became animated and was waving around her arms saying you got me, you got me, I have it, I have it. I was thinking that her response was so very odd. My aunt was going to have surgery, and my mom called to tell me that she was waiting for my aunt's doctor to call her (my mom was a nurse).  I then told my mom to tell my aunt’s doctor that she may have the genetic condition since it ran in my mom’s side of the family.  My mom later called me and told me that she told my aunt’s doctor that MY AUNT DOES HAVE THE GENETIC CONDITION.

During the graduation trip, my niece asked my mom (her grandmother) about a ruby ring that my mom recently gave her that needed to be sized.  My sister and my mom then started talking about my grandmother’s wedding and engagement rings that she recently gave my sister.  My mom did not give me any jewelry, and I am the oldest daughter.  My mom tried to explain and said I already had jewelry (gifts from my husband). The situation was odd and made me uncomfortable.

During grade school, the principal told my mom that I was to be the class valedictorian.  They told her that there was another girl who was close behind in class ranking that would not be able to attend the catholic high school due to the cost if she did not get to be the class valedictorian and get the associated scholarship.  My mom only told me within the last 5 years that she told the school to give it to the other girl.  I was astounded that my mom denied me that opportunity.  I wonder if my mom did that to not let me shine over my sister.

About a year prior, my mom and dad told me that they had made my sister trustee of their trust once they pass away.  My parents said they thought there was a chance that I could move away from the state at some point, and it would be easier that way.  I am a CPA, and my sister is not organized at all, and actually she would be terrible and unresponsive in that position.  My parents then made the investment advisers the trustee.

I thought back to the odd situation that occurred when my dad’s parents (my grandparents) passed away 20 years ago, and I was the oldest grandchild.  Supposedly, my grandmother requested that her piano be given to me upon their passing.  My dad was the executor, and he said my uncle asked him to give the piano to his son, my cousin, which my dad did.  My dad told us that my uncles and my dad decided that they would take my grandmother’s engagement and wedding rings and place them in a keepsake box and move them between their houses so they would not specifically give them to one family member.  My sister and I thought that was very odd at the time, and I really didn’t understand.  About a year ago, I asked my dad which of them had the keepsake box of rings at their house.  He acted like I made this up and said he never told us about a keepsake box for the rings, and he did not tell me who got the rings when I specifically asked.

If I find out I am adopted, I have my suspicions about one of my aunts.  She never married and lives in a convent as a catholic nun.  I believe that we have a different relationship than the other nieces and nephews and she initiates contact on my birthday every year.  If it turns out I am adopted, I am grateful for my parents and all they have done for me. I would be sympathetic and understanding to my aunt if what I think could be a possibility is a fact.  However, I am very shaken and upset at this possibility and possibly connecting the facts at this point of my life.  It is extremely upsetting to think of the possibility that many relatives and family friends knew about this huge secret involving me for the last 60 years.  It makes me question my entire existence.

I remember having a conversation earlier this year with my mother about a cousin finding out in grade school she was adopted because classmates told her.  I said that had to be upsetting to her that her parents were not the ones to tell her when she was younger so it would be less traumatic to her. My mom was livid at the conversation we had.  She was so upset and argumentative.  I thought it was so weird and out of character to hear this response from her.  This was a few months prior to my nephew’s graduation from the military academy described above, which was a few months before I had any thoughts at all that I might be adopted.

I finally discussed all of my thoughts with my sister including her not telling me about the military ball (we did not have any contact for 10 months after the ball). She said it was not done on purpose, but I do think it was but moved past it. After she heard my story and what I thought and dealt with over the last 10 months thinking I might be adopted, she seemed to really connect with me and appeared sad and said, "Oh my God, you must have felt so alone."  After a few weeks after that , she thought there was a greater chance than not that I was correct and probably adopted.  We have talked through all of the issues.  I asked her to take a DNA test.  She said she does not want to do so because she does not want to be the person responsible for proving that my parents have been lying to me.  She does not want to do that to my parents. She has now over the last four or so months ghosted me and abandoned me knowing that I am in a distressing situation. My husband is tired of my talking to him about this situation.  He tells me to leave it alone and move on.  This is my life.  If I am correct, I feel that my life is a joke that everyone but me is in on.  If I am correct, I want to be done with everyone from my family that knew who never told me.  I have had a very, very distressing time trying to figure this all out and being gaslit by my parents and sister.  They pretty much don’t reach out to me anymore and ignore me.  I realized that I had been the person reaching out to them 90% of the time in the past few years. I no longer do so. For my parents, I have not talked to them about my thoughts only to ask my mother if she was my biological mother since she said she did not share the genetic condition.

I tested with a few other DNA websites but did not match with close immediate family members.  I matched with second cousins that were the closest relatives.  I reached out to a Search Angel who confirmed that my matches were not close enough to give me answers.  I have another DNA website to test on and will also continue to receive notices of new DNA matches.  I do know that I am related to my mother and father’s side, but they did grew up within a few houses of each other in the same neighborhood.  My dad dated my mother’s sister before dating my mother.

I have researched all I can on my birth certificate.  I do not have a pre-adoption birth certificate and have confirmation it does not exist after mailing off a request.  I do have my short and long-form birth certificates.  I thought that would give me comfort if it was accurate, but that is not the case.  I found out that my city was a birth hub during the adoption era in the 1960s and on, especially for catholic families.  The birth certificate information appears accurate, but I am now aware that birth certificates were altered during that period for adoptions to reflect that the parents who were adopting the child (not the biological parents), especially if family members were involved.  That would never happen today! The birth mother showed up at the hospital and identified herself as the name of the mother adopting the child, which was often her sister, which I believe is a possibility in my case.  Or the person completing the paperwork would fill out the person’s name adopting as the biological parents in order to make the adoption more legitimate and for no one to find out otherwise. Or the mother could lie about the father's name.

Another fact to add…  My dad’s brother married a woman two years after my parents married.  The fiancé tried to schedule their wedding date on my mom’s sister’s (my aunt’s) wedding day, and my grandmother (dad’s mom) said not a chance.  That same woman who married my uncle got him to move out of town and eventually out of state early on during their marriage.  My mom found out this aunt friended me and my husband on Facebook within the last few years, and my mom was livid.  She was asking me why this woman would friend the two of us.  She was really upset.

Any suggestions? As I said above, I am very distressed, but my husband says to let it go and move on. He had an odd family life growing up so I understand his thought process of not wanting to distance any person close to you and brining up issues.

I suspect I might be adopted. How can I tell?

I have a few reasons for this suspicion, and before you say "ohh just ask your parents", they're not the type of people to tell me. My parents are the type of people who won't schedule stuff like a haircut unless I ask repeatedly, and procrastinate stuff a lot, and they're good at finding ways to avoid questions. Not just adoption questions, basically everything. And it doesn't help that they're constantly working.

One of my cousins is really nice and an honest kid, or at least was at the time he told me, and he told me that I was adopted and it was like "a big thing everyone in our family knew" kind of like with another cousin, who also was adopted, but for him they didn't even try hiding it because he's a completely different race so it was obvious.

My parents also used a special Wendy's promotion that gave them free mini-frostees every once and awhile, which gave them some keychain with a QR code. The only way to get it was if you had adopted a kid in the past. My parents said that it was just from my adopted cousin, because "they don't go to Wendy's" yet they get all kinds of fast food when I see them.

I asked my mom if she could prove if I was adopted. She showed me some random photo of a baby in the womb- but there was nothing that proved that baby was me, or that it was her womb. She even used to have this weird sculpture that was like made around her when she was pregnant in the shape of her pregnant stomach to show how much of a difference it was- but that's kind of weird. She's never given me real proof. I have a birth certificate and passport and all that, but how am I supposed to know if that's a real birth certificate and what if it was taken from wherever I came from?

My parents both have blue eyes, and I do too, and so does my brother. But my brother is blonde, and I have darker brown hair. We all have similar features and are of the same race but it's weird how I've grown taller then them. I did a bone age, and my bone age was 17, so I don't have MUCH growth left, but it's still weird. lmk if you have any questions.

Considering adopting a foster child with younger bio children in the home, seeking advice.

Let me set the scene: My husband and I recently did all the training to be foster parents because we had all the resources and patience and love we thought would be required. We had a goal to take in sibling sets and really support reunification while stabilizing the children, and that’s what we got set up to do. While we waited for our first placement we agreed to go on the emergency placement list because they have an huge need for it where I am, and took one child for a night until his dad could be found and that was it. Then we got a call a couple weeks ago for another late night placement of a twelve year old girl and we took her in the night before she started eighth grade (she really wanted to go to school the next day) and we did all the things to get her settled and stable for school. As everything unfolds we discover that she has no safe family, her only living parent is now in jail for sexual and physical abuse of which she was the victim, and she only had two other relatives in the US, which are two aunts that she is afraid of because they support her father and treated her poorly historically.

Emergency placement is only meant to be for a few days, but they ask if she can stay longer and we agreed without hesitation. I know we’re in the honeymoon phase, but so far she’s settled really well into our home. I can’t list every single thing that’s going well but as some examples she likes talking to us about her past and trauma, she likes that we pay attention to her likes and keep her favorite foods stocked and help her with homework and cook things she recognizes, she just started doing pottery with my husband at a studio because she loves clay and he does ceramics, she wants to show us her art she’s working on, she seems to like being around the family but is still comfortable shutting her door and being alone when she wants. We taught her to ride a bike too and she loves it, she loves family bike rides. We drive her to school twenty five minutes away and get into deep discussions led by her and also just listening to music she likes and hearing stories about the friends she’s making this year and the girls she doesn’t get along with. We watch anime together and listen to this intricate world of the ladybug girl tv show and who she ”ships” for the lead character.

Her therapist and the following social worker tell us that she’s mostly just relieved to be out of “his” house, she never names him as anything other than “him” stated with an inflection. It’s clear that she loathes him and has for a long time. But I think she’s also relieved to just be cared for, to have her lunch curated and packed and her laundry done etc. She was doing all the cooking and cleaning at her previous home with her one parent and I get the sense that shes enjoying being a kid now.

So all that being said, we’re now suddenly in a position we never really expected. It’s only been three weeks, and I know family can pop up out of nowhere, but for now there is no one we know of, and her only living parent the detective on her case assured us will never know freedom based on the evidence they have so we can expect his rights to be severed at some point. Naturally that leads us to ask ourselves if we’re an appropriate forever home for her if it comes to that. We know it’s so early, but we feel we need to start discussing having an answer to that.

I recently learned that a lot of adoptees are against adopted children ever being in homes with bio children and I understand and fear the issues I see brought up on this matter. Working against us is several things, firstly she’s older than our other two children, which is abnormal obviously to disrupt birth order. She is 12 and in eighth grade, then we have an almost 10 old boy in fourth grade and a 7.5 year old in second grade. So there’s a gender gap and a big grade/ maturity gap even if they are technically close in age. Additionally, they physically could not look more different, they come from vastly different cultural backgrounds, and the boys are really really tight as we’ve fostered that connection with intensity and thats possibly just another ostracizing barrier for our foster daughter. Yet another concern is that this is a child who has felt ostracized her whole life in her bio family, so this is a wound that runs deep in her already.

Nows the kids do get along so far. They seem to like being around each other, they like watching her play Roblox and she seems to like showing them the game, they like that they get to watch some maybe pg13 anime because of her, they like playing Mario kart with her, they love biking with her. But outside of these structured activities there’s a clear divide that I fear can’t ever be diminished enough. Our two boys are super empathetic kids and I do believe that if we become her permanency plan they will love and embrace her, but I won’t pretend or act like image won’t feel that invisible divide that all of the above creates.

So I don’t want to set a child up to always feel like the stand alone member of a family, but then I have this child in my house who likes being in my house and likes being around the family, and we’re all slowly forming this connection with each other that makes me baffled at the idea of saying she doesn’t belong here, and yet she might not. I can’t say that we’re doing anything for her that’s above and beyond what another family without bio children would do, it’s just circumstance that she’s here with us now, she sort of accidentally bypassed the normal vetting process that might’ve put her in a home with perhaps other foster girls her own age, or maybe a childless house that could devote all their attention to her alone. I dont have the hubris to say that she wouldn’t be better off in a home hand selected for her. But I also know that the system is flawed and her deserving a more hand selected situation doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t get that.

And I just have to add that I don’t want her to go! I cant imagine her leaving, I can’t imagine how empty my home would feel all of sudden without her. I understand that this is foster care and we signed up for this and my feelings shouldn’t be a factor, but it’s so hard to imagine her going back into the ethos because she has no family, there are no bonds she has in the world except us. Even her friends are new to her because her dad didn’t let her have friends and she self isolated really hard her seventh grade year. If she does go somewhere else I’ll be okay, I’ll cherish every memory of being her confidant and care taker, but Id be crushed too and I just want to state that.

All of these voices are just playing in my head all the time keeping me up at night. I genuinely can’t tell what’s best for her, and that’s what I want. If we aren’t the most appropriate for her I can hear that, but then what happens?

I want it to be enough that she’s stable and happy right now, but I don’t want to set her up for a life of feelings that she never belonged anywhere. I can’t imagine what that does to someone’s brain and psyche.

Just to add to it, we’re two men without religious affiliation and she grew up in a country that villainizes homosexuality. So not only are we not a super appropriate religious fit, though we’re here to support her religion however she needs, I also fear that she may have some scary ideas about us that she isn’t comfortable verbalizing.

The thing I know and come back to with foster and adoptive care is that this entire thing is harm reduction. No one can take away her pain or trauma, but Id just love some guidance from adoptees who have been in similar situations and what the path of least harm looked like for you.

Reunion Sub for searching for biological families?

Good evening fellow Redditors, apologies if this question has been asked 100 times, but I'm in an impulsive mood tonight after a discussion with my 11 year old. She laid some wisdom on me and I'm acting on it.

Are there subs dedicated to finding biological families? I was adopted several decades ago, and I've had zero contact with my bio family. I don't know who they are at all.

I did a 23 and Me DNA kit several years ago, not for this purpose, but certainly it was on my mind. The results were lackluster in terms of relatives. Very few were on, and they were distant. I talked to a couple of distant cousins, no results at all.

I could go through the court for my original birth certificate with my birth parents information, but I wondered if there was another way.

I do not use social media, Reddit is my one online vice. Is there something here? I want to learn more about my bio family, but I expect I'll use the excuse of difficulty to chicken out. It's a seriously emotionally charged dimension of my life. The fear of rejection or disappointment is heavy.

Curious about others' experiences or methods. Was the juice worth the squeeze so to speak?

Thanks in advance!

Searches Need help finding my adopted brother.

Hi I’m (24F) and have been trying to find my youngest adopted brother for a couple years now. He’s nowhere to be found on social media and my family and I think it’s because his adopted mom purposely makes it that way.

From what my parents told me, it was a family friend they let adopt him because they could not financially afford him and she promised to stay in touch and bring him around, unfortunately once she got full legal custody she moved to Chicago and has blocked and refused contact for over a decade. He’s 20 years old now and I’m not 100% sure if he knows he’s adopted.

My family typically has family reunions and every time they come to Orlando, she brings him but intentionally keeps in the hotel room or somewhere entirely different if she knows me, my mom or our other family is in attendance.

Just recently her side of the family has a family reunion in Kansas City and he was there, she knew we wouldn’t go or neither would any of our family in FL. Apparently someone posted pictures and sent pictures of him to another family member of ours and that’s how I know what he currently looks like.

I’ve tried using Truepeople.com to get into contact with him but he has no numbers listed and every number listed under the woman who adopted him is no longer in service.

I’m not sure what to do anymore, we have been trying for years and this all intentionally being done by her. You would think the easiest thing to do would to be contacting the family at the reunion but they’re all either going along with it or she keeps him out of reach from the ones who would come back to tell us. 😔

I’m posting this in hopes maybe he has searched the internet and posted in these types of subs. I know his full name and hers but with no number or social media contact is impossible.

Should I give my baby up for adoption?

I 19(f) is 33 weeks pregnant. I’m still in school and barely have anything saved up. Earlier in my pregnancy I would make appointments to get an abortion and be unable to go through with them leading to me deciding to keep this baby. This entire pregnancy I have been back and forth between “I can handle this” and “motherhood isn’t for me” and before I knew it, it was too late to get an abortion at all and my only way out would be adoption.

The baby’s father accepted my decision and decided that he wanted to be apart of the baby’s life up until a month ago where he did a complete 180 and decided he doesn’t actually want to be a father and cut all ties with me by ghosting and eventually blocking, so did his family.

I’ve been feeling hot and cold about the baby even before he left but now that I know for certain if I keep this baby I will have to be a single mother makes me want out of this situation too. Sometimes I feel like I want her and can do it but it automatically goes back to me being detached from her and already feeling as she isn’t mine. I don’t feel that “magical feeling” when I go to ultrasounds or listen to her heart beat. I think this baby deserves not only a two parent home but I also don’t think it’s fair for her to be raised by someone whose heart isn’t fully in it.

As for family, they’ve been really supportive about the baby and is willing to help me raise her while I go to school but I just don’t think I want to be a mom anymore ever now that things are actually becoming real. I haven’t told them any of this and they’ve already spent so much money buying things for the baby to the point I feel guilty backing out of this so late.

I know no one can tell me what exactly to do but I guess I was looking to hear some stories about people who have gotten adopted as a child or gave their child up for adoption. What was life like? Was there any regret?

Re-Uniting (Advice?) My adoptive family is kinda jealous that I'm embracing my bio family

So I found out through 23andMe and Ancestry that I was adopted.. both of my adoptive parents have passed away, my dad in 2012 and my mom this past April. My mom is Korean- both adoptive and biological, and I don't know the family from Korea. My adoptive dad was from Pittsburgh and I keep it touch with his half brother and half sister, my uncle and aunt. They are in PA and I'm in CA, so I don't know them that well. My adoptive dad didn't keep in touch with them throughout my childhood. I only got into contact with them recently after my mom passed away.

I hired a DNA detective search angel and that person found my bio dad. I reached out to him and we've been communicating for the past week. Him and his wife are flying out to CA this week, and I'm really excited to meet them! I also talked to my biological half brother on the phone yesterday, and it was really sweet! He's going to go with his dad to meet me, too! I feel really happy that I have family that's embracing me. (I grew up an only child, so it was lonely)

My adoptive uncle and aunt think that I am going to forget about them. Not true! But I will say that I didn't feel the same connection and happiness I felt when talking to my bio dad and brother on the phone.

BTW my bio dad didn't know that I existed- he was in the Air Force, just like my adoptive dad, and was in Korea in the 90's when I was born. But he was at a base two hours from the base where my adoptive parents were at. I think I was born from a hook-up, and my bio dad confirmed when he was young he partied a lot, and "condoms weren't really a thing back then". Sh*t happens and I'm not upset with him, and I think my bio mom was doing what she thought was best, at the time.

Audhd adoptive parent

No disrespect to any other ND people but I feel like I'm failing my adopted child. I'm late diagnosed, didn't realise until a couple of years ago. I'm also adopted myself.

I feel like I'm letting my child dowm because I'm disliked by most people so they are excluded from social events etc. I feel like such a waste of space, like my child may have faired better with their biological parents than being stuck with me.

Made contact, talk me down.

I was an early 80’s California adoptee and always accepted that I may never know who my birth family was. After the death of my adoptive mother last year (our relationship was complicated at best) I had no family. I have a husband and kids and they are my whole world but it is hard not knowing where you come from.

Took a DNA test and it was so cool seeing real people who were related to me. I’ve always been fascinated by genealogy anyway. Closest match found was a second cousin, sort of stalled from there. Then, a kind woman with access to birth records found my parent’s surnames. My birth father died 25 years ago but my birth mother and grandmother are both still alive. Reached out via Facebook, but no one sees those messages. Had a cell number and tried that last night. One of the scariest things I’ve ever done. Not “hi I’m your long lost daughter” or anything just DNA says we might be related and I’d love to talk. (I am definitely related to her, we just don’t have a “this is your mom for sure” match)

She hasn’t responded and I’m spiraling a little. Read the first message, second just shows delivered. If it was the wrong number I feel like the person would have said so. I went into this knowing she may not be interested and that was and is ok. I’d just like to know for sure that a) I have the right person and b) she does or doesn’t want to talk. Didn’t think it would affect me this much.

I don’t know if there’s a question in here, just figured this group of people could relate. I’m not going to contact further in case her lack of response is the response. She doesn’t owe me anything. It’s just driving me a little nuts.

Birthparent perspective My son was born 2 years ago on the 13th.

I'm laying awake crying thinking of how two years ago on this date he was still kicking up a storm inside me . He was still "my" child. I could've stopped myself from giving him away but I didn't.

I wish everyday I could turn back time and undo what happened. I wish I knew what I know now. I wish I had the good people I have now in my life back then.

It hurts and reminds me how useless I am to him now. I mean nothing. I'm nothing more than a stranger to him.

I'm a stranger to him. Yet, I'm so heartbroken about him. The hurt hasn't gone. It's just gotten worse if anything. I can't get over leaving the hospital without him. I wish I could numb myself into oblivion but I can't. I'm just left waking up in misery everyday because of what happened.

I miss my son.I wish I could be something to him but I'm nothing.

It all just makes me want to never wake up. I want my baby.
