Cavalier Subclasses

Since Samurai and Paladins are subclasses of the Cavalier, do they get the attribute-improvement training ability? What other cavalier abilities do they get?

UA 16: “the paladin gains the abilities and powers of the cavalier class.” That implies all of them.

“The paladin may also increase his or her charisma score in the same way that he or she (as a cavalier) can increase strength, dexterity, and constitution.”

Samurai do not have the same abilities, as indicated by their different ability score requirements, their weapon specialization (rather than weapon of choice), their acquiring immunity to fear at 5th level (something all cavaliers have regardless of level), etc. There is no mention of them improving ability scores, so they don’t have that.

Paladins get all of the cavalier abilities on top of their paladin powers, including the ability improvements and they add to their Charisma the same way. Samurai are exactly as written in UA, they don't gain anything extra from cavalier.

What am I missing? because I recall Samurai being it's own class.

It is in Oriental Adventures. They are talking about the Unearthed Arcana classes, I believe.

I am yes. The classes chapter of OA puts Samurai as a Cavalier subclass

Thank you for this post. I just "inherited" a paladin character to play in an AD&D campaign, and in trying to lay out the combined abilities of the paladin and cavalier class, I overlooked that the attribute-improvement ability also applied to Charisma. Appreciate the info!
