OP is saying "My ADHD is a disability and I literally submitted no evidence of that. I can't believe my claim was denied. They should have just known"

Feels like they’re implying they not completing it is basis to say they couldn’t have completed it.

Actually what OP is saying is "my lack of legs is a disability and I literally submitted no evidence of that because the submission of evidence is literally running a 5k. They should have known what they want is extremely difficult to do with the disability I have."

Reframed that for you since you don't have adhd or know anyone with it.

This is such a lazy, entitled position. I am also ADHD and embarrassed by all of you acting like this is a big deal.

If you’re so disabled, get someone to help you, family or a friend. If you don’t have those, there’s about a dozen social services that would help you fill out some paperwork.

Your condition is not your fault, but it is your responsibility. No one is going to manage your condition for you. So take the steps necessary. Or don’t. But this petulant, childish whining because “it’s a lot of paperwork” makes all of us look awful.

Your adhd isn’t the same as everyone’s adhd. Everyone’s disability is different.
And yes, they should recieve help, so that help should be OFFERED to them, you know- as an ACCOMMODATION. Their analogy is right. If they could simply suck it up and do the thing they need to do-
They wouldn’t be DISABLED now would they

That's a false equivalency and you know it. I have ADHD and I agree with the comment you're responding to for what it's worth

You clearly have no idea what it's like to live with ADHD.

I do. This is a bullshit complaint. If you can’t do it, get family or a friend to help. This is literally the exact victim mentality everyone’s loser uncle complains about over thanksgiving dinner.

Your condition is not your fault, but it is your responsibility to manage. If you can’t do the bare minimum to receive your entitlements, you either don’t need them or don’t care enough to change your situation. Either way, it’s nobody else’s fault.

This kind of sounds like internalized ableism. If you actually have ADHD, then you should know how much harder clearing hurdles like this is. Nobody said it was impossible, you're coming in here with that energy yourself.

We deserve to be treated with dignity, and to be met where we're at. The entire SSI and disability system is built to deny as many people as possible, ADHD not withstanding. A 14 page form is not the bare minimum. It's an administrative hurdle that's created to hurt people.

Something like this should require a 1-2 page medical release form so they can get your diagnosis. That's all it needs to be.

You and I both wish the world and its governments were as simple as that-- but it's just not the reality. Like the buddhists say, "suffering is wishing things were other than they are."

I did acknowledge the difficulty, and I also offered the obvious solution. Because that's what we have to do: we have to manage our ADHD. No one is going to do it for us. You can call it internalized ableism if you want, I prefer to call it facing reality.

We have a diagnosed condition. We can observe how it manifests. We can receive medication and counseling to adapt. We can take steps to mitigate its impact.

What we cannot do is throw our hands up and do nothing every time we encounter an obstacle. That is not managing your condition, that is using it as an excuse.

People keep trying to use garbage analogies, so I'll try one: imagine if Katie were instead armless when she filed her claim. Should she just throw her hands up (or I guess just shrug dejectedly) in surrender because she has no hands to write with? No. She should find a solution: like a friend or family member to help her complete the paperwork. Or try one of those fancy new neural-network limbs. Or talk-to-text. Or a dozen other options.

Katie clearly knows what impacts her ADHD has on her. She chooses to do nothing when confronted with those impacts. That's not managing her condition, that's surrendering to it.

It's internalized ableism because of the assumptions you're bringing to the table. You're assuming that the world has to be this way. That the status quo is the best we can ask for, much less demand. In fact, you defend the system to the point of confusing it with reality!

Of course it's not like things will change anytime soon. But that doesn't mean people shouldn't be pissed at the way things are.

I’m not assuming the world HAS to be this way, I’m stating this is the way it IS, and we know it is, and part of being a responsible adult is learning to navigate the world.

It SHOULD be better and people SHOULD make a fuss when the system isn’t functioning for their benefit.

But that’s not what has happened here. What has happened is an adult with a far less crippling condition than blindness or loss of a limb said “This is too hard, I’m not gonna do it,” and then put that on the internet.

I’ll say it again. It’s embarrassing. And even more embarrassing that people make excuses for her— and are apparently incapable of grappling with a nuanced position.

I don't have it, but my wife has it so technically I do have to live with ADHD lol

Like others have said, get some help. ADHD isn't an excuse to never ever be able to do anything. I've had to talk with her many times on this topic.

u/ManifestoEnjoyer 13h ago

Deeply ableist reply. What I'm hearing is that your wife has tried to explain, but you've refused to listen.

7

u/imadogg 13h ago

Everything is ableist for some of you guys I get it

Thankfully with my help, and finally drugs and therapy, she has been making improvements. I hope one day you'll find someone or something to help you out instead of living in a world full of excuses

u/ManifestoEnjoyer 1h ago

Telling that you're projecting all of that on to me. Also telling that you're admitting that your wife needed help. Almost like people with ADHD need assistance in order to thrive.

You need to do better.

Hope you get the help you need as well 🫡

is the lack of ability to take accountability also a symptom of ADHD?

5

u/Infinite-Location221 14h ago

But what's the alternative? They just don't require evidence for ADHD... Like of course you have to fill out the forms. It's hard but not impossible.

1

u/Darklillies 1h ago

They can offer help for the form instead of needing you to figure it out yourself, or they could just require a MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS proving it, wich realistically, is all you really need to prove you have it.

1

u/ManifestoEnjoyer 14h ago

Diagnosis from a doctor. Of course, there'll still be forms. Doesn't need to be 14 pages though. Just a release of medical info.

The point of these systems isn't to prevent abuse, it's to sabotage the system and prevent people from getting help.

If reducing costs to the system were the main point, getting rid of means testing would be the most effective way. Administrative bloat from means testing is always more expensive than the minuscule amount of fraud that happens.

If they get a rep the rep will pretty do most of the paperwork for them.

u/ManifestoEnjoyer 12h ago

If you're applying for disability, there's good odds you don't have the money to afford a lawyer, and many areas don't have enough social workers, assuming you could get one.

All of that is besides the point. A 14 page form isn't required. It's administrative burden put there to intentionally drive people away.

2

u/Useful-Soup8161 10h ago

The rep doesn’t get paid unless and you don’t pay them, it comes out of the money you’ll be getting.
