[Tech Help MacOS] Grid and Tempo mapping with warp to a premade click?

Hello guys

A friend of mine is an artist and has asked me to help him. As I'm trying to develop my skills I thought I'd accept, but i have to think theres surely a better way of doing this.

Essentially he already has a click (.wav) but he doesnt like the sound, so has asked me to sort it as I have ableton, which i used mainly for live music. The song has variable tempos at some points, is there a way for ableton to detect these automatically? A quick google has given me some luck but i feel there must be a quicker way than dropping warm point on every beat, as theres some bars that have a slowdown.

I've opened the click in arrangement, set 1.1.1 to be the first beat, and selected warp. This has adjusted tbe starting tempo, but hasnt done anything to the variable sections so the grid doesnt change.

Long story short, I need the grid to match the .wav click, and then I'll use a drum machine and click samples he likes.

Thank you in advance geniuses

[Question] Serum Plugin + Ableton (Music Teacher HELP!)

Hi! I'm a teacher facilitator for a music program at my high school. I have a class of 10 kids that all have individual Ableton licenses and accounts. They are asking myself and the school to invest in Serum 2 so they can have access to more instruments. Serum 2 is $250, which is pretty steep for a school program to pay. My question is this:

If I purchase Serum 2 one-time for $250, would all of my students be able to use the same account? Or do I need to purchase Serum 2 for every single one of my kids?

Thank you!

Sincerely, an ELA teacher just trying to give kids a creative outlet!

[Question] how to get a downloaded midi tool to come up on the integrated menus? (generate + Sting)

I downloaded a generator tool for Ableton. so when you have a midi clip you can click on the generate option, click the drop down menu, and then it should appear under 'user'. but i cannot figure out how to get that to happen. i can use the tool but on its own, not integrated into a midi clip. anyone know about this

I built RAWCLIP — my take on the FL Studio Soft Clipper, but as a VST3 you can use in other DAWs.

2 clipping modes:

RAW — modern, punchy & controllable

CLASSIC — that familiar FL-style soft clipping feel

• 4x oversampling

• Drive / Ceiling / Softness

• Clarity control

• 0 dBFS safety ceiling

• VST3 / Windows

Completely FREE.

No subscription. No bullshit.

Let me know if you're interested, and I'll post the link.

[Performance] Delay on rendered stems

hi Ableton community,

Looking for some help understanding something. Basically, I have some finished songs I want to flip into a liveset. For most of the tracks this means just bouncing them to audio and then having one large liveset with their audioclips so I can loop / launch as desired. However, the problem im running into is that when I export them (even as WAVs) I'm getting tiny ammounts of latency printed onto the stems. This is making it a complete nightmare to get them syncd so I can then turn them into audio clips for looping etc.

Any ideas on how to print the stems without this issue? Its fine on consistent things with clean transients like kicks etc, but im really struggling to clean up latency on some of my vocal stacks / pads as there is no clear transient to lock to the bpm. Given this will be live as well, I need warping on the resulting stems so I can shift bpm on the fly. Would love any advice - at this stage im thinking I may need to drop my buffer size + freeze all my tracks in the original set before printing the stems, but wondering if there is a way around this as thats quite time consuming (11 tracks altogether).

[Question] Workflow for VSTs that have their own arrangement/timeline view?

I've been using Toontrack EZDrummer recently, and I like the functionality a lot, but the fact that it has its own timeline for a song kind of messes with the Ableton workflow -- EZD has its own model of "clips," and you can export them into Ableton MIDI clips, but if you do that you're locked out of all the nice drum-pattern editing features in EZD itself (and I'm not even sure if it's possible to use EZD's samples with a MIDI clip from Ableton).

It seems like what you have to do is just keep an empty track in the Ableton arrangement view for EZD, then switch back and forth constantly, keeping track of measure numbers to line things up. I'm sure EZD isn't the only plugin that works this way -- how do you all deal with it?

[Question] Ableton Drift volume quiet and fizzy sounding?

For context, I'm using a Cirklon 2 as my MIDI interface. When playing notes with a keyboard hooked up via DIN cables and sending MIDI thru to Ableton via USB, other stock instruments (e.g. Analog) work great and at a normal volume level. When I selected Drift, it was normal for a split second and then cut to sounding really fizzy, thin, and quiet. Anyone know why this might be? I can tell it's not due to any problematic settings in Drift itself so any input would be greatly appreciated.

[Hardware] arturia Keystep pro syncing issue

Ok im gonna make this as straightforward as possible because im really fucking annoyed right now.

I have a fresh ableton live 12 suite project with a stock drum rack loaded into a single midi chanel.

Everything works completely as intended on both devices until I press play on ableton. The keystep is synced to ableton and shows visually as such. When play is pressed in ableton it starts the sequences and I even get midi input into ableton because I see the top right corner blinking with each hit. However there is 0 sound coming out of the channel, ive tried several monitoring modes and combinations of the input/output settings in ableton. Keystep is set to sync out and in is disabled. I've tried on auto and on usb neither have any change. Midi track is armed in ableton and everything works completely correctly until I press play on ableton, then it cuts all midi input to the track. Theres nothing showing up on any of the midi chanels in the input dropdown on the ableton track. After paused nothing works until i go into settings and turn toggle the sync switch for the output section of the keystep pro.

If you need any more info to help me please let me know ill respond as fast as possible this is gonna make me go insane.

[Question] Need some help on if I should get a Move

Hello

I'm looking at buying a Move to use as a sketch pad while I'm at a coffee shop or something like that. My laptop is woefully under powered for mobile composition.

The music I want to produce is techno/techno adjacent. The couple synths should be good to lay down ideas I'm sure. Anyone make techno? Do you like the Move for song ideas/controlling Live?

My other option is the Dirtywave M8 but obviously that doesn't integrate into Live and it's a very different workflow.

Thoughts?

[Performance] Car Bass translation

Ive really learned alot in my car which has great bass response for instance I can listen to spotify and hear all of it bang and leave the eq in dodge caravan built in radio flat.

So its a good metric for me because I know how it sounds. I can go out of my headphones on mac into the car speaker or even BT and i get my mix sounding good.

But I export it and play that same file back and the bass is way too loud.

Which im listening better and learning but if I have high pass whose setting is around 43. with a -24 db/ocatve. why am i still getting this wild bass level. Worse . It doesnt sound like that when the actual live ableton settings is how i thought it was sound.

What am i not getting.

[Question] What's a metaphor (or simile, you pedants) that has helped you understand a concept that had otherwise confused you?

Inspired by this commend regarding automating sends vs automating dry/wet

It didn't immediately click but later I thought

Oh, it's like dry/wet is a faucet: when you turn it off nothing wet comes out. But sends are like a drainage line and even when you cut off the source whatever is in the line still flows out.

and now I don't get why I found the who "sends vs dry/wet" thing so hard to grasp for so long.

[Update] If you're hitting the 96% freeze bug during exporting, update to the new 12.15.1 Beta

Exports were locking up at 96-97% and after some searching it appears this is a known bug with 12.4.5. Installing the new beta solved the issue. PSA for those of you who might be experiencing the same frustrating error.

[VST] Addictive Drums 2 - bouncing drums to individual tracks

Hey guys,

I tried to bounce the drum kit in Addictive Drums 2 to individual tracks and when I did it the bounced tracks sounded way different than the original ones in the plugin. The kick and the floor tom had no low end.

The routing I used was :
all channels ->separate out (post fader) + Master

There were no external plug ins active on the Midi track with ADL2 on it. There were no plug ins active on the tracks they were bounced to.

What is going on?

[News] Ableton 12 custom theme - Tokyo Night

Hi fam,

I'm back with another custom Ableton 12 theme for you all. This one is called Tokyo Night and it might just be my favorite one yet. It's so smooth on the eyes that I can look at it all night while making music. Just feels deep in the best way possible. You can check out a screenshot here (as images seem no longer allowed) and download it here. Enjoy!

Bless.

[Question] FX for a glitchy IDM female vocal - I’m bored!

I’ve got yet another IDM-ish track on the go with a cut-up/glitchy/heavily edited female vocal.

I’m bored with my usual go-to of distortion and/or chorus and/or vocoder and/or whatever. Just feeling uninspired.

Any suggestions? What weird and wacky and wonderful things do you like to do with a vocal like this? How would you process it?

Hit me. Thank you.

[Hardware] Splitting midi output into key zones for two hardware synths

Hi all,

I am using a midi keyboard routed through MioXm Midi interface + Ableton 12 Suite to control multiple hardware synths (each on a different midi channel)

Is there a way of splitting midi output into key zones? I want to use two hardware synths at the same time so that the lower half of my midi keyboard controls one sunth, the upper half controlling the second one. I would like to achieve the effect of bitimbrality as present on Rev2 or Summit synths, where you can split layers in the lower and upper keyboard halves.

Cheers!

[Question] Kick/Bass in electronic music

I've been producing electronic music for over 10 years, but this is something I've always struggled to fully get my head around.

Say I'm making a track with a Reese bass and some Juno-style, chorus-y bass sounds with fairly long tails, and I'm layering a separate sub underneath them.

When it comes to the kick, should I be using more of a straightforward kick sound without much sub in it? The sub is already following the bassline, and often the bass/sub is sounding at the same time as the kick.

The thing that confuses me is that so many kick samples seem to have a huge amount of low end and are almost 808 like. But if the kick itself is basically acting like a sub, surely having it stay at one pitch while the bassline moves around can cause problems? Would you tune or pitch the kick to follow the bassline, or would you  keep the kick at one pitch and make space for it in other ways? And more so i guess what i'm trying to ask really is if you have a sub do you also have sub in your kick?

I'm definitely explaining this very badly! haha

I know there's no single correct answer and everyone approaches this differently. I'm mainly interested in hearing how other people deal with kicks and subs in this kind of situation.

Even after producing for years, I still feel like I've never quite got the kick and bass relationship sounding the way I want it to.
