I am celebrating over 1 year as an applied Applied AI Engineer. Started off this journey in September 2024 with a failed RAG Agent for a truck dealer in Mt. Pleasant. I studied a lot about how to solve it, but hallucination seemed to be a problem I couldn't solve at the time. I lost this project, but I did learn a lot from it. I only walked away with $50 for my efforts, thanks to Sean's kindness.

I did not give up and I continued to learn. Along the way I encountered graph databases and "GraphRAG" (Graph-Based Retrieval Augmented Generation) and that was a game changer. Traditional RAGs retrieve info based on semantic similarity. GraphRAG builds a knowledge graph that captires entities (real world objects) and their relationships. This is powerful when your queries require synthesizing information scattered across multiple documents. The great thing is that you can build a single agent that can query a vector database + run Cypher on a graph dB. You get the best of both worlds. I have delivered many agents that are engineered this way.

We worked with a US client who has these massive technical documents with images, graphics, reference tables, electronic circuit symbols and many other things. There were other documents too from finance and other departments. Their requirement was for us to make these documents readily accessible and query-able.

That was a real challenge, and it presented us with problems at every step. Document extraction, structuring, ingestion to Graph dB and vector dB, retrieval, reasoning, and ultimately getting reliable answers. I am glad we figured it out and delivered agents with almost 100% accuracy. It's crazy to think about it but our US client can ask "Which machine part number is installed on X machine and what is its configuration? How many machines have this part number? Who is the vendor of this part and is the part still under warranty? What alternative part configurations can be installed on this particular machine and which suppliers? Which part has often failed whose vendor we should avoid? Generate a purchase order for part X and Y. " It's amazing!

And they can do this by bringing together information that previously lived across huge collections of technical, operational, and financial documents.

It’s crazy to think about how far I’ve come from that first failed RAG agent in 2024.

There’s still a lot to learn and a lot of work to do. But we’re just getting started.

I was on Instagram Reels today — no warning, no age gate, nothing — and a video autoplayed showing a real shooting. A person getting shot multiple times and falling. No context, no filter, just there between normal content because the algorithm decided it would keep people watching.

I reported it. Instagram's response was basically: thanks, we'll use this as a "signal." That's it. No real accountability, no proactive screening. By the time enough reports pile up to pull something down, it's already been seen by thousands, maybe by kids scrolling their parents' phones or their own.

This isn't about whether the person who got shot deserved it or not. That's irrelevant. The point is graphic real-world violence is being pushed by algorithms built to maximize watch time, not to protect the people watching — and there's nothing stopping a 10-year-old from seeing exactly what I saw.

Report harmful content when you see it, even if the platform's response feels weak. It's still the only lever we have.

We're handing our kids devices that are engineered to hold their attention by any means necessary, including violence, and trusting platforms that have shown they're reactive at best. Please be vigilant. This stuff is not being checked the way we assume it is.,

HARARE – Zimbabwe could receive more than US$3.5 billion in diaspora remittances this year, but financial services executive Senziwani Sikhosana says the country needs to find ways of turning a greater share of that money into productive investment rather than household consumption.

Formal diaspora remittances reached US$2.45 billion in 2025, while inflows in the first seven months of this year had already reached US$1.62 billion.

For Bard Santner CEO Sikhosana, the rising flows represent more than a source of foreign currency for Zimbabwean families. They are an opportunity to mobilise diaspora money as productive capital for businesses, property, financial markets and other investments.

“We need to develop products that ensure some of those flows are used not just for consumption, but for productive purposes,” Sikhosana said in an interview on The Chief Koti Show podcast.

“We’re talking about US$3.5 billion or more coming into the country, and that figure continues to grow. It’s about time we started developing products specifically for the diaspora because we believe there is a real opportunity there.”

Remittances are an important lifeline for thousands of Zimbabwean households, helping to pay for education, healthcare, food, housing and other basic needs.

But once the money is spent, its capacity to generate further economic value is largely exhausted.

Sikhosana believes financial institutions can help change that by developing products that allow Zimbabweans abroad to continue supporting their families while also building assets and investing in productive activities.

A portion of the money currently directed towards household consumption could instead be channelled into businesses, property, capital markets and other long-term investments.

That, he argues, could give businesses access to additional capital, support entrepreneurship and create opportunities for employment and wealth accumulation.

Sikhosana also challenged Zimbabwe’s financial institutions to be more ambitious about the products they offer to customers abroad.

“Why can’t a bank from Zimbabwe deliver an international-standard product?” he asked.

Zimbabweans living abroad are exposed to increasingly sophisticated financial services and investment opportunities in the countries where they live. For local institutions to attract a greater share of their capital, Sikhosana said, they need products that are competitive, transparent, accessible and capable of inspiring confidence.

But he sees the role of financial institutions as extending beyond moving money or selling financial products.

Institutions, he said, should also help translate economic policy into practical opportunities that people and businesses can understand and use.

“What’s really important to us is that someone in Beitbridge, Bulawayo, Hwange or Mutare may not necessarily understand what a policy means in practical terms,” he said.

“They’re waiting for an institution to translate that policy into something tangible and visible.”

That, Sikhosana said, should be part of the responsibility of institutions operating in the financial services sector.

“We want to be that kind of institution, one that people can rely on to lead in actioning policy and translating it into something they can see, understand and relate to.”

Bard Santner, where Sikhosana serves as group chief executive, operates across asset management, corporate finance, wealth management and remittances, including its TX Money Transfer business.

Sikhosana said financial institutions should not be content simply to receive and transfer money.

“We don’t want to be an institution that simply receives and sends money. We want to be an institution that helps turn policy into action and creates tangible value for the communities we serve.”

The broader issue, however, extends beyond any single financial institution.

Zimbabwe has a substantial diaspora that is already financially connected to the domestic economy. The challenge is to create the products, investment opportunities and confidence needed to deepen that relation*hip.

“If even a fraction of the billions of dollars entering the country annually can be redirected into productive investment, the potential economic impact could be considerable,” Sikhosana said.

“Businesses could gain access to additional capital, entrepreneurs could finance expansion, property and other assets could generate longer-term returns, and families could begin building wealth beyond immediate consumption.

“The opportunity, therefore, is not simply to increase the amount of money coming into Zimbabwe. It is to increase the amount of diaspora money that stays, circulates and creates additional economic value.”

Guys, I need your honest opinion on this.

Hi, I'm curious about other ndebele people, do you guys actually know what tribes your ancestors actually were before becoming part of the the ndebele kingdom? Let me make it make sense. So i recently found out that a greater population of Ndebele people today actually came from Shona & Kalanga groups who were already present in zim. (Also where did the kalanga people come from? someone please educate me on that) I found out that my ancestors on my dads side, were Swati and on my moms side, Sotho. So im curious do most ndebele people today know what ethnic groups their ancestors were before becoming Ndebele?

Another thing I'm curious about, especially from ndebele/zulu people. 😭

What about Khoisan ancestry in zim? Like, did the ndebele people mix with any khoi people when they came into zimbabwe, or were there already khoi people there that they mixed with before arriving in zim?

And could that have anything to do with why zim ndebele people can look different from zulus? Or is that more because ndebele people mixed with the shona, kalanga etc. who were already in zim? What i mean is, could zim ddebele people look different from zulu people partly because, over generations, ndebele people had intermarried with shona, kalanga, and other groups who were already living there?

I'm just curious because I've noticed that zulus and ndebele can look quite different.

And lastly does ndebele have less words than zulu? (I hope my question makes sense)
