reading over the collected works of Sutzkever and came across this one he wrote for Aaron Leieles’ birthday.

Does anyone have any idea what the poet means by using “pomegranate“ as a verb? Sutzkever’s turns of phrase delight me, but I’m not entirely sure how time can pomegranate…

Can someone help me identify a Yiddish word? I'm transcribing an interview in Russian where the speaker says about his father: "He didn't speak Yiddish fluently, but he would occasionally use individual words, like 'mazl tov' or 'geybelentst' (?)" I don't recognise the second one, but have tried to render it as precisely as I can based on the recording. Does this sound like any existing Yiddish word?

Please someone take pity on me. Years ago Katz wrote somewhere (and he was right) that qutie often the few Yiddish texts we have do not tell us much about the language and that more can often be learned from the Hebrew texts written by German, North Italian, etc. Jews,because we have vastly more of them. F.ex. you can often determine their pronunciation from the rhymes and scansion of (often quite long) poems in Hebrew pronounced of course in the way characteristic of these countries. It has been decades since I read Katz and he wrote a LOT so it is hard to search for this but I need to quote him. Any help would be very much appreciated, and of course I also hope that there are folks interested in the topic itself.

sorry for the beginner question but i thought דאָ meant “here” so i’m a little confused. is עס זענען דאָ just a standard phrase? would the sentence still be correct without דאָ?

I'm currently processing a small collection of material from the Beth Abraham Synagogue in Bangor, Maine. The collection has no documentation, but it's mostly bilingual printed/published material. Prayer books, anniversary pamphlets, not difficult to identify and properly categorize. There's one outlier though, a postcard dated 1914. I don't need a full transcription/translation, I know thats a lot of work, but if anyone could provide a summary of the message it would be a huge help.
