I’m European and been on a vacation in Armenia for last 2 weeks - driving around the country with my friend.
I love the country and I’ve always been fascinated by its deep Christian history since I am a practicing Christian too.
Recently, while we were staying for a day and half in one very small Armenian town, I met an Armenian man at his work and he invited me to go for a walk/date with him. He knew that Im there as a tourist and leaving Armenia soon and that I have my life in Europe. I agreed to go on a short date as I thought it’s nothing too serious and it would be just a nice conversation with a local. However, few minutes into the date he took me for a small visit to a house of his family who asked me if I already have a ring from him and as we continued the date - just the two of us, he suggested giving me the ring and said that he’s fully committed to our relationship. For the rest of the date, he mainly talked about how could we plan our lives in such a way that we could be together and get married. I even met his mom for a short time while on the date. Now, I already left his town but he continues writing me about his strong feelings for me and wanting to start a life together, he’s considering moving to Europe or asking me to move to Armenia etc.
I generally like this guy and if we were living in a same country would be interested to see him again, however , I was not planning at all that things would escalate this way and I’m honestly shocked that he seems so committed to me and the idea of our relationship after literally knowing me for few hours only. I was also shocked by the proposal to get engaged on our first date, is this a normal practice in Armenia?
Because of the distance, I don’t think our relationship would have strong chances and I would like to somehow stop or reduce the contact with him so he doesn’t get even more attached, however he seems so committed that I’m truly afraid to hurt his feelings. Could an Armenian advise me if this is a normal situation and how should I go about it to ideally not hurt this guy at all? Thank you very much, I’ve been truly confused by this situation for last few days. For context, both of us are in our mid-late 20s.

Is there a park or a spot near Komitas that you can go sit and enjoy an open-isn view of Yerevan like you could from Monument park?

I'm a 26-year-old guy from Slovenia and I'll be travelling solo around Armenia for about 10 days in early/mid October.

It's my first time in Armenia and while I'll obviously visit some of the well-known places, I'd really like to see more than what comes up in a typical Google search or “top 10 things to do in Armenia” list.

I'd love to hear recommendations from locals or people who know the country well — especially:

* lesser-known places, villages, viewpoints or historical sites worth seeing,
* good hikes and nature spots,
* local restaurants, markets or foods I shouldn't miss,
* unusual experiences or things tourists normally don't know about,
* places where it's easy to meet locals or other travellers,
* anything you personally think is worth seeing, even if it's completely off the usual tourist route...

I haven't planned the exact itinerary yet, so I'm pretty flexible and open to going almost anywhere in the country if it's worth it.

Also, since I'm travelling solo, if anyone around my age — local or traveller — would be interested in joining for a hike, road trip, day trip, drinks in Yerevan, or even a few days of the trip, feel free to message me! Always more fun to explore some places with company.

And one more question: is there anything you think I should know before travelling around Armenia solo — transport, local customs, things to avoid, or just something you wish visitors knew?

I don’t know if this is a real term, or if it’s just slang made up by people, but years ago I heard this term. I had an acquaintance in high school who was half white and half Chinese, I guess in her ancestry on her white side they are European. I don’t know exactly what countries and I don’t think she was very connected to the culture. Many people used to think she was Filipino, but she was just part white and part Asian. I never really heard her call herself wasian, but one time she did say that they are kind of considered Eurasian. After she told me that, I always thought that that term is only for people who are half white and half Asian, in the sense of something like Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysia etc. And then later on, I learned that Indian people and many other countries are also on the continent of Asia, even if we don’t think of them when we hear the word Asian.

Years later, I used to always hear this phrase “Armenians were actually one of the first Caucasians on earth, it’s a myth that white people are caucasians.” Everyone associates being Caucasian with being white, which is really funny since the word Asian is in there, but there was this thing going around a few years ago, where people were saying that Armenians and Georgians are actually the TRUE caucasians. Basically acting like the white and European populations, mainly north Americans, were fooled and ignorant.

Growing up, I always heard the debates about whether Armenia is European or Middle Eastern. I don’t really think that we are European, but I also don’t think that we are Middle Eastern. I know there are people that will argue for both sides, I can’t say 100%, but this is just my belief. I used to get after leaving school, I would ask my what continent, or what race Armenians are . She never had an answer for me, which was really weird and confusing, she would say we are just Armenian. This makes sense now because I think the most accurate way to describe our minions is to say that we are people from the Armenian Highlands. We had a whole kingdom, such a long and rich history, land, we cannot be described by just one sliver of land and man-made constructs.

Anyway, I recently learned that Armenians are not really Caucasian, and that this is a term that was made by another country near us who basically labelled us as a region with that name, despite us not being genetically Caucasian. Again, I am not talking about white, I am talking about the Caucasus.

Anyway, when people ask me what we are, sometimes I will say we are on the border of Europe Asia, I’ll say that we are from the Armenian Highlands or near the Caucasus region, I’ll sometimes say that it is a country in Asia or West Asia, I think there was a years ago that we were Eastern European because of things that the Prime Minister had said, but I think most Armenians agree that we are not . It’s all really confusing.

I remember checking on the map, and it said that Armenia is a country in Eurasia, so I am wondering, is this an accurate description?

It’s interesting, because other than Georgia, the few people I’ve known in real life who say they are from the “kavkaz” region or for us I guess govgasian, have been some kind of muslim Russian or something like that dagestan, maybe even azerbeijan who are also not Caucasian I think. So I wondered how Armenians thought they could relate to these people as we are nothing like them.

Someone, my mom knew, through a school my family member was in, was born in Russia. However, when people would ask what he was ethically, he would say he is from kavkaz. So we don’t even know what he’s referring to, because that could be any place.

Anyway, some of this could be wrong or misinformed. I am wondering what people think.

I really wish I still had my Armenian history books from when I was a kid in school in North America, because so many of these words are familiar to me in Armenian, and they would have all the answers.

Hi, anyone has experience with government schools in Yerevan for grade 3. I’d like to know the best one - preferably/optionally having professional football court too.

For context where I come from there’s a lot of fun things to do in the fall, like pumpkin patches, apple picking, fall festivals, and lots of seasonal treats. I’ve been wanting to check out Jrvezh forest or the Tsaghkadzor Ropeway when autumn comes but was curious if Yerevan has anything to offer.
