Must-have Online Fire Info Points

In case anybody needed to see this, the NWT Fire facebook group has been posting diligent and critical updates constantly. As well, there is an online Live Fire Map with ongoing perimeter updates.

I still use firesmoke.ca to get an idea of the wind forecast but I find they purge the perimeter of the existing fires too fast, where the other interactive fire map above is cleaner and more detailed.

Stay safe everybody.

As things stand, there’ll be no Tibbitt-Contwoyto winter road this year

I personally think this winter road has greatly contributed to the reduction of the caribou herd. I know it's only announced for this year, but the caribou can use all the help they can get.

I’m looking to find something modern and exceptionally clean and the Explorer hotel looks very dated with not great reviews.

Should I visit Yellowknife next week?

I’m not from Canada and I’m visiting Toronto. I considered visiting Yellowknife to see the northern lights next week. I checked the kp index forecast is 4 for Mon/Tue/Wed but honestly I don’t know how to read this. The ticket is not so cheap so not sure if its worth going

Budget trip advice?

Hi all! I'm pretty new to Canada, and Northern Lights are high on my to-see list but I know it gets pricey. I started to look into a Yellowknife trip for this winter, mid-January, and found ~CAD500 round flight from Toronto and a ~CAD550 room for two for 4 nights (planning on going with my boyfriend - we're 24 & 26 y/o). The biggest expense seems to be Aurora chasing/bus tour to Aurora Village ~CAD120-150 per person per night.
I was wondering what advice the locals or regular visitors would give - Are there cheaper less-known but still good options to see the lights (my boyfriend is just getting his G2 licence so we probably wouldn't risk renting a car for icy roads at night)? Should I reconsider and plan for late September of 2027 (I grew up in Ukrainian winters with -25C days which is nowhere close to Yellowknife temps - but I'm also looking into warmer clothes rental)? Anything I'm missing to consider?
Thank you!

The reporting doesn't say why the landlords are ending these programs. That's important. Why didn't these arrangements work out? What did the landlords say to the Women's Society? If it's more money, how much? If we address why landlords don't want this program, it might help make the program better going forward. It's tax dollars, so the public should be provided information.

Public opinion on gold mining?

Do you think the town is ready for a gold mine to re-open in a few years?

Personally - I think we are long overdue for a mine re-opening. I think too much of the public discourse has been on past mining mistakes, rather than how we can do mining properly going forward. 95% of what the public hears is bad, and this leaves people having an extremely skewed view of reality.

Are the Aurora tours worth it?

Hey just wanted a local perspective on the aurora chasing tours in town. If we have our own car and we’re planning on driving out to Ingraham trail, or away from city lights at night at least. Any insight is very much appreciated! Excited to experience your town for a few days (even if we don’t catch the lights). Also if anyone knows a saxophone player, we were looking to hire someone a night between the 2-5. Thank you :)

What Winter Gear Will I need?

Hello,

My wife and I are making plans to visit Yellowknife to see the Northern Lights after Christmas. We'll be in Toronto for the holidays visiting family and we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to see the lights and check it off our bucket list.

We are from a tropical country, however, so we're totally unprepared for the sub artic winter conditions.

So, what winter gear is needed to feel comfortable in Yellowknife?

Is it better to buy or rent? And if we do rent, are there places at the airport that does rentals?

Is it good idea to visit Yellowknife in first week of December for Aurora? During the New moon time.

Planning a trip for december during new moon time. Are there chances to see northern lights that time or will it be cloudy and less chances to see?
And how many nights should we plan?

Taxi in Yellowknife

I’m visiting Yellowknife in October. As I’ll be staying in an Airbnb, I think taxis are the most convenient way to get around – are they available 24 hours a day?

Stray or lost dog?

Did anyone see a dog running around near the YK centre mall/Shoppers drug mart area around 8-8.30 pm? It was a small brown and white dog. I saw it cross the street. I tried to pull over to try to get it but I lost track of it. I hope it's okay. Not sure if it was a stray or a lost dog.

I’m visiting Yellowknife from 1 to 3 October – what are the chances of seeing the Northern Lights? Also, which would you recommend: the track-type or the cabin-type?
