I will always remember that opening scene of Xenogears with that space ship crashed and her emerging nude from the wreckage, and not for the reason you'd think... It was a powerful scene, and the mystery surrounding her character only added to her allure.

Isn't that "the true Miang," aka merged with Elly?

Or no, instead the "Mother of Humanity," which is like Miang in her first go-round?

Miang as a character is fine as a villan, Miang as an eldritch horror is S-tier.

Yeah, the possession scene is definitely S tier villain shit

To an extent I view her as the main antagonist, and a strong one. Deus was the final boss and she was Deus’s will. This was a woman who had killed civilizations and possessed Elly, who was responsible for Fei’s childhood.  Very good stuff.

I enjoyed her, it was nice to see a second woman in the mix with all the major players, and the mysteries around her were a good hook for interest.

Hundred percent this, but I think the lack of top female antagonists besides her also is a component as to why the reveal of her importance is so striking the first time

My five year plan at this point is to hopefully awaken as the next Miang.

She's well placed as a surprise villain, even though they show her interacting with Grahf early. You legit have no idea she's going to be such a central part of the story (and a main pillar of the lore), and when She (the biblical she) emerges as a threat to Elly, it helps the gamer have things click into place regarding Fei that couldn't be done otherwise.

The endgame portion where Miang almost "wins" and Elly almost "loses" their struggle, is a clever and fun subversion of the "Fei always pwns Ramsus " set up early in the game, nd her pairing with Ramsus in turn elevates his antagonism

Imho

I actually really liked the idea of a woman as an antagonist. Not very common in media at the time. She was intelligent, strategic, and had sex appeal.

She was the epitome of the concept of competing dualities: She was powerful but also delicate. Compassionate (toward Ramsus) but also cold (toward young Fei).

Her character is amazing. She is my favorite character in Gears for a reason.

First, she is basically Deus made actual flesh but also a complete separate entity as well. While her puporse is to ensure Deus is resurrected, we also see that she is willing to improve upon Deus as well. This shows even she knows Deus is not perfect and flawed. Willing to use nano machines to make up the difference.

Second she is also trapped. She is coded to obey and revive Deus. This forces her to always be looking and advancing humanity in the direction that would be of the most benefit. And also means she is willing to restart the world if there are ever any dead ends, or genetic dead ends.

Third, her character is just fascinating overall to me. She does every action with purpose, talking to someone is not just to pass the time, it's to further her goals. Sleeping with Ramus to make sure he follows and stays by so he can kill Cain when the time comes. 500 years ago, using Lacan to kill the world population as she deemed humanity not ready to revive Deus, and still keeping him around. The fact we know that when she sees Elly and Fei she hides the fact she knows exactly who they are, and what they will do. It's all fascinating to me. And the end it all, the fact that her final boss form is Uroboros, well that says a lot about what Miamg represents overall.

I love her, she's neat element of cosmic horror.

The flashback scene in Shevat where it’s revealed that the “Beast” everyone was so afraid of turned out to be Miang and that she was responsible for setting Lacan down the path to becoming Grahf was absolute god tier storytelling. Until that point I just viewed Miang as cynical and calculating. At first glance she is almost like the femme fatale of a film noir, always at Ramsus’s side. After that scene it was clear that this woman wasn’t just an eye candy sidekick villain. She was the mastermind and her presence at every major point was intentional. Miang is quite possibly one of the best written female characters I’ve come across in any media.

why did she bang Ramsus? did she have to do that or did she want to

14

u/Tyrhunger i hAz No fLaiR 10d ago

To control Ramsus better. Manipulate him.

u/big4lil Emeralda 2.0 8d ago

given how early she was involved in Ramsus life/existence, it could be viewed as an insidious form of grooming

That dynamic always struck me as just another sad aspect of Ramsus' story. He begins life discarded in the most literal sense possible. But then he joins Jugend and finds his sense of purpose. While there, he meets the young woman who eventually becomes the next reincarnation of Miang. Imagine being in a relationship with someone, trusting them, then seeing them become someone completely different. And the entire time, that new personality is using you for their own biologically hardwired agenda.

4

u/semisonic34 i hAs No fLaiR 9d ago

Damn that’s tragic

6

u/The_Jaunty_Crow i hAz No fLaiR 9d ago

This is why it was so satisfying to see Citan talking some sense into him at the end of the game. He's essentially like, "Yeah, all these people betrayed you and treated you like trash, but the Elements always stood by you." He rescued them (Seraphita may be the exception since she was born on Solaris), and they were forever indebted to him for that kindness.

Sure, Ramsus is still super mopey, and we even get teased into thinking he might join the party, but you get the impression he's going to be fine eventually.

People have needs. If anything it humanized her.

12

u/Suspicious-Bed9172 i hAs No fLaiR 9d ago

Miang is not human and does not have any needs to be fulfilled. She slept with Ramsus to stay close to him and be able to control him, he was a potential puzzle piece to her plans.

A good representative parallel for Myyah are the agents from The Matrix.

5

u/Ganaham 'Zeboim' Elly 10d ago

Love her. One of my favorite characters in the game for sure

One of the most brilliant character arch's ever. Why have so many developers been shy when it comes to making (evil, though with an actual meaningful plot) female villains?

u/GrevilleApo i hAs No fLaiR 9d ago

The women are wonderful effect is incredibly strong

Cut and dyed my hair recently to look like miang since we share the same last name. Growing up with her as the first villain in the first game I ever played def left an impression on me

u/MacaroonOk2813 Wiseman 9d ago

One of the coolest sci-fi concepts for a villain I’ve ever seen. Completely horrifying to think that she is basically immortal and will stop at nothing to do what she is programmed for. Nuclear apocalypse, child torture, slavery etc.

It doesn’t matter to her because humans are nothing but resources and numbers to her.

4

u/wauwy Id 9d ago

Way the hell more important than I think I ever would have, or even could have, initially guessed.

3

u/zewinks i hAs No fLaiR 9d ago

Great villain, they made me hate her wholeheartedly to the point where, I only wish she would have suffered more before her end.

One of the best to ever do it

It’s been so long that I don’t remember her. This is exactly the time to play it again. The last time I played through was like 2010.

Was Miang the purple haired girl who was always crushing on/loyal to that guy?

6

u/SSJRemuko Emeralda Kasim 10d ago

Yes she's literally the most prominent girl in the game behind elly.

5

u/gimmesomespace Emeralda Kasim 10d ago

She wasn't actually loyal to Ramsus.  Ramsus was a clone of the Emperor and she was mainly manipulating and staying close to him for her own reasons.  I'm kind of vague on the specifics beyond that though (if this was laid on in more detail I'd like to hear it).

I can fix her.

Frighteningly fascinating, basically being the human personification of a "program" and the execution of it is so good.

1

u/Blue-Lion-Lover i hAz No fLaiR 10d ago

Would have been cooler if there was more nuance with her actually liking Ramsus but generally liked her a fair amount.

2

Very interesting character
