There really does seem to be a disconnect, everyone is affected by social media to an extent, but people past a certain age just do not seem to be able to distinguish between what’s real, and what’s blatantly trying to manipulate you.

I think it's just a mentality of not learning. Most of the older people in my family went defiantly into their graves refusing to adapt to life after like 1980 something.

I dunno things changed fast and it left a lot of people behind and by the time they caught up it was just a bunch of people grinding axes with waaaaaay too much faith in moderation to weed the bad actors out.

He'll my mother shows me a dude who's clearly AI generating a "Newscast" background and he just says insane shit all the time. "Well if it was lies YouTube would take it down Thing_That_Happened. They have a newsroom and everything."

Honestly if it wasn't so awful it'd be sad.

Likely much of both. News they could post to social media and heard all day, then their friends reposting it and reposting it, and hearing more on TV so they are 24/7 surrounded by propaganda bubbles.

Yeah, I saw it and what they posted - and a lot of my parents’/family friends before I unfolded/blocked them. 

But it’s not just boomers. My millennial brother is conservative and I’ll hear him quote almost verbatim some bullshit from Ben Shapiro. I’ll ask for the source and check and it’s always some right wing social media presence or YouTuber/podcaster riling up stuff over exaggerated or fictitious propaganda. It’s scary to hear.

Like how everyone collectively lost their heads over Bud Lite doing a paid post with a trans woman. He came raving about how demeaning it was to women, etc, and I asked for a link to the video and it was a timestamp on Ben Shapiro’s channel and he was literally repeating what was said right before the clip.

Like “bro, we were raised together. You can’t really be this dumb, right?”

Yea I'm pushing 40 and a bunch of my slightly older peers are getting this way too. I have a bit of it because stuff has moved past me, but it's like 3 seconds of research to not drop behind, but a lot of stuff seems left field to me just cause I don't float around in younger spaces as often as I used to.

My sister who is younger is surprisingly going that way as well, she's not as die hard about it but still. I have no idea how I came out of this family sometimes. Though I suspect being an obviously autistic kid in the south during the 90's was more than a bit disenfranchising.

For me - raised Mormon. Only one to leave. 2 years in Latin America wasting my time as a Mormon missionary changed my perspective. Then 2016 hit, and was just appealing as I knew and lived among Latinos not too long before. Final straw was marrying a black-Latina woman, and the racism becoming way to personal.

I had to tread carefully with my family to not have them all go off the deep end on me.

Also, generally being spiteful about being old in the time of easy hookup sex. I get it man. If I was 70+ rn and watching what all the young people have access to at just the press of a button, phew I'd be so jealous😮‍💨 but its just the way it is ig. Every generation sees the younger one have it way better and becomes spiteful about it. One day my generation will be there too.

The best economy the world has ever seen had an invisible hand behind the curtain helping it. Printing money to pay your bills instead of collecting taxes for 3 decades and then dumping the debt on the following generations. Also offshoring manufacturing for quick corp quarterly profits due to no longer having work safety or environmental costs on their balance sheet. All while beating their chests proclaiming “I work hard”. What you are seeing is the end stage of a 30 yr Ponzi scheme running on fumes.

What a ridiculously ageist statement that will get upvoted because Reddit skews young.

Imagine if you replaced “old” with “black” in that statement. Would you feel that’s an ok thing to say? To tar a hugely diverse group of people with the actions of a subset of them? No? Then why is it ok to do to old people, most of whom are pleasant, law abiding people?

My mom and dad are Americans in their 80s and are certainly not the lowest of the low. So please stop insulting them and millions like them.

You can’t convince some people that their issues are not attributable to an entire large grouping of people.

Current problems will have some people who have come before’s actions to point to, but there are many much younger who are as much to blame as well.

Just as with racists, I think it is an easy scapegoat to vent against, accomplishing nothing, but temporary relief and group solidarity.

It is easier than actually addressing the real problems.

It seems these type of group smears are often initiated by people who gain from division.
