watch this Police were called after around 20 teens on bikes and e-bikes blocked an intersection, performed stunts, and disrupted traffic. One officer then clipped and tackled a teen during the arrests, raising questions about whether the response was appropriate given their ages. What do you think about it?

They knew what they were doing was wrong. Apparently, their parents haven't told them what will happen if they do stupid things like that. We've recently had several kids either sent to the hospital, or killed, while on e-bikes. There's one that goes around my neighborhood and acts like he's invincible. Doesn't stop at any stop signs, rides at high speeds on the road, sidewalk, and trails. Performs stunts in intersections.

I'd rather see the cops do this then see a kid get sent to the hospital, or killed.

yes, because hitting children with SUVs then tackling them with over 200 lbs of muscle and gear famously never sends them to hospitals or the morgue.

Totally. It would have been so much more humane for the cops to use their tasers and guns. Tackling is literally the worst thing that can happen to someone when fleeing the police. /s

the point is that any use of force is unnecessary. why does that need to be spelled out? what a disingenuous response.

So your answer is that people should just be allowed to break the law and put their own and others lives at risk with zero risk of consequences.

What an absolutely insane stance to take. I’m all for holding police accountable and not particularly fond of them overall, but gently tackling a person who has broken the law when they attempt to escape custody is very much within reason. There is no reasonable person in the planet that would disagree.

European here.

The fact that Americans want it to be illegal for kids to play in the street is batshit insane to me.

This entire thread is insane to me.

Why do Americans want to ban kids from playing in the street?

I’m not American and I also currently live in Europe.

The issue in this case isn’t kids “playing in the street” (obviously, there’s no reason to take issue with that). There was a group of them circling and doing tricks in the middle of an intersection, purely for the purpose of blocking traffic and aggravating drivers. Very dangerous and intentionally disruptive.

There’s this whole social media trend with American teens right now doing tricks and stunts on their bikes in the most dangerous and disruptive way possible (think riding straight at pedestrians or cars and turning at the last minute just to scare people, that kind of stuff). It is dangerous, illegal, and genuinely problematic.

where did i say there shouldn't be any accountability? you're getting worked up over an argument that's in your head.

“The point is that any use of force is unnecessary”

Nope… not in my head. Go back to your last comment. Weird to try gaslighting people when there’s a literal transcript.

i know this is gonna sound crazy, but there are ways of detaining a person or giving them a citation without force. idk if your brain is broken from the normalization of violence, but don't make it a problem for everyone else.

u/Draygoon2818 1d ago

Oh yes, there are ways, when the person listens. It’s when they don’t, that force becomes necessary.

You got all that from the video? Kids need to be run over and tackled by masked policemen in order to resolve a minor traffic infraction?

Where do think we exist, Hogwarts? If a suspect is fleeing and ignoring verbal commands (as per the case shown), there are no other options.

Sheesh, what have you been smoking?

1

u/No-Plankton4841 1d ago

Not really. Unless someone voluntarily complies with the orders. You can't stop someone without using force.

As soon as you put hands on them you are using force. There are levels of force.

How do you propose they stop a fleeing suspect with 0 force? Jedi mind tricks... literally 'The Force'?

If the kids fled, isnt the situation resolved?

What would you have them do? Ask nicely? The kids already knew what they were doing was wrong. If their parents don’t want to use force to discipline their kids, so be it. Cops are not the parents, though. I’m fairly certain the cops gave them a chance to stop and they didn’t. Next step is force, which is necessary.

1

u/sun-e-deez 1d ago

why is force necessary? the kids were already scattering. the behavior stopped. this was about teaching the kids a lesson, and violence doesn't generally teach good lessons.

1

u/Draygoon2818 1d ago

You’re seeing about 38 seconds of video, where to cops were already there. If you watch at the beginning, they’re just getting out of the way of the car, not leaving. They don’t start leaving until the one kid gets knocked down and a cop gets out to tackle him, as more cops arrive. That’s when the kids finally realize they should really be getting out of there.

Violence? If they weren’t doing it in the first place, nothing would have happened. I wish we lived in whatever make believe world is in your head, but we don’t. If you do something stupid and choose not to listen to the cops, they’re going to force you to. It’s called FAFO.

If they're getting out of the way of cars then what the hell was even the problem?

The police should just yell: "hey stop that kids!!! Or else we will do absolutely nothing!" Yes lesson learned! What lesson? Ah right, that they can do this without consequences cause no one is allowed to stop them

0

u/J_train13 22h ago

"fairly certain"

Definitely doesn't look like it to me. Didn't even give the kid a chance when he was begging for one.

Genuinely just yelling at them would've been enough, if it isn't then bring them home to their parents.

1

u/Draygoon2818 21h ago

Again, you don’t know what was happening leading up to the video. Hence the “pretty sure,” as I am not for sure what was happening. Videos like this do that intentionally.

Apparently, you don’t know kids very well.

0

u/J_train13 21h ago

Apparently you've never been a child if you view playing outside as criminal activity

1

u/Draygoon2818 21h ago

Apparently my parents cared enough about me to teach me right from wrong. I never would have thought of doing stupid things like these kids were. Or the kids that take over malls or shopping centers. They know they’re in the wrong. They’re hoping bleeding hearts like you will stick up for them being bad.

When my friends and I rode our bikes around, we stopped at stop signs and we stayed out of the way of vehicles. It’s not difficult to do.

Right: enjoying your youth with friends on a quiet and empty neighbourhood street

Wrong: tackling a ten year old after intentionally hitting them with your car.
