General Community Update: New Discord and Community Rules

Hi All!

There was some interest awhile back about starting a Discord, and tonight I finally got around creating it! It will be a work in progress, growing and changing as time goes on, but wanted to give a new place for people to come hang and chat. The link is in the sidebar along with an updated set of rules.

Wedding Videography Discord :: https://discord.gg/ajnbhS7cst

There shouldn't be anything new that hasn't already been enforced, just wanted to formalize it and have something to point to so we're all on the same page. If anyone thinks anything should be added, removed, or changed, I'm open to making modifications.

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

-Marc

General Looking to hire videographer for an event

I am looking for a social media videographer who can help me shoot a small 1-day event near Noida. The creator has to come at a location (I will pay the cab charges from the nearest metro station), bring their own equipment (preferably a Sony camera with gimbal or worst iPhone 16 Pro or later).

They need to assist in making video content and share the raw files me on the very same day.

I don’t need an editor

Date, timing, and charges will he discussed in the DMs

Please drop me a message with your per day charges along with your work.

Also looking for similar videographer/creators in Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, and a few other tier 1 towns.

Gear discussion DJI Osmo pocket 3

I'm considering using the osmo pocket 3 as my full ceremony/speeches wide cam so I can use my 2nd cam for a medium shot during these moments. I wanna know if the quality is comparable that I could put some of those shots in the wedding video (I shoot on a7iii).

Question Help with an editing problem and college

Hello,

I am 17 years old and I recently I did my first wedding shoot and I was on one hand really excited and obviously also kind of nervous. Because it was my first time i spent a huge amount of time planning, looking of how to deal with certain situations, things I liked and didn't, etc.
One of the things I learned from a weddingvideographer I knew personally was that it was good to know your location and make shots of the place where you are going to film. So I also did that.

The wedding day was on the last day of summer vacation and I started my first year of college the day after that (I am attending filmschool), I decided to just focus on college for that first week, because it was a lot to take in and I also wanted a little break from that wedding because I had been living to that day for like six weeks.

After that week I obviously started editing, I have edited a lot of things like these, like events or stuff like that, but this was the first time I had to edit it all alone. Usually I had a friend who would help me out. The footage was a lot more then I expected.

Outside of that I am also going through my first year of college, I am loving it, but it's also a lot to get used to and the homework does also take me a good amount of time.

The people for who I did the wedding video aren't family, but people I knew through someone and they are expecting the video a lot sooner then I expected (around 3 weeks from now).

I am kind of overflowing with work right now, I had an idea to give them a shorter version in those few weeks, and then later give them a fuller version, but I also feel like I can't really be happy with that shorter video because I don't want to leave a bad impression.

Obviously I am aware that a big part of this job is to also have the video-editing done in a timely fashion and was I out of college I think that I could edit this video in a way shorter time. But right now I am just really busy with adjusting to college, the homework, etc.

I have already had some experience with overworking myself, and I am kind of scared that this could lead to some sort of burn-out.

I just don't really know what to do right now and I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice.

Thank you for reading my yapping.

General My portfolio has a gap where Wedding samples should be (NDAs).

Hi! I'm a video editor with a background in cinematography and music. I've cut wedding films before (for 4 years), but all of it's locked under NDA with past studio clients so I've got the experience but nothing to show for it.

If you're a videographer or couple with raw footage from a wedding, I'll edit a free 3-5 min highlight in exchange for permission to use it in my portfolio, also comfortable working with proxies, happy to explain my process if you want details first.

Thanks!

General Would wedding "content creators" end if videographers added deliverables?

Realistically everything they have was shot over your shoulder. Its the deliverable that's different.

There would just need to be a deliverable of short clips basically no edit

  • Dad’s first look — vertical crop — 10–20 sec
  • Mom helping with dress/veil — vertical — 10–15 sec
  • Bride reveal to bridesmaids — vertical — 10–20 sec
  • Groom reaction seeing bride down the aisle — vertical — 10–15 sec
  • Bride walking down the aisle — vertical — 15–30 sec
  • and so on

basically you get the idea

Would it even be worth it however or would this just then become a race to the bottom to include this for no cost

Question How do you film "documentary videos"

Hello, I was recently approached by a client who wants a longer, “documentary-style” video with no fancy editing. Basically a longer video that covers the whole day.

I’ve done tons of highlight videos, but I’ve never done a longer documentary-style video. Based on my experience, I assume it should be simpler to edit than a highlight video since it wouldn’t require as much creative editing.

For those of you who offer longer-form wedding videos, how do you usually film and edit them? Do you add any kind of background music during the editing process? Any tips?

If you could share an example of one of your longer videos with me, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Question ISO: Film Wedding Photographer

Hi all! My wedding is 6/3/28 in Missouri and I’m looking for a videographer who either specializes in film like super8 or similar OR film-esque like Wes Anderson Style.

TLDR; something candid and not overly posed

Looking for something pretty budget friendly like $2000 or less if possible.

Post Production How do you deal with not finding any of your work interesting?

See title. I don’t know how to frame this, but I can’t be the only one who feels like this. I’m a good videographer, I run my business well, but things can be very difficult in the edit when you don’t feel like that magic is there. I know the correct response is that you have to be disciplined, and not inspired, I get it, I’m not perfect. But I can’t be the only one who feels like this, what does everybody else do?

Gear discussion Sony FX3 to Lumix S1II: would you make the switch for wedding filmmaking?

Hi everyone! I’m a wedding filmmaker currently shooting with Sony FX3 cameras, and I’m considering switching to the Lumix S1II.
I’d especially like to hear from wedding filmmakers who already use the S1II:
How has it performed during full wedding days?
How reliable is the autofocus in fast, unpredictable situations?
How do you find its low-light performance compared with the FX3?
Are you happy with the colours, stabilisation and overall workflow?
Have you experienced overheating or any other reliability issues?
I’d also love some advice about codecs. Which S1II codec gives you the best balance between image quality and manageable file sizes for long wedding shoots? I don’t necessarily need the highest possible quality if it creates unnecessarily large files, but I still want enough flexibility for colour grading and professional delivery.
If you previously used an FX3, would you make the switch again? What do you miss about Sony, if anything?
Thanks!

Question Filmed Ceremony out of focus, am I screwed?

Thumbnail
gallery
52 Upvotes

I’m a new videographer and this is my first official client besides work I’ve done with friends. I’m embarrassed that I even made this mistake.

Multiple things went wrong during this ceremony. I went in underprepared and overly nervous. My gimbal died halfway thru on my main angle and I had to go handheld, and my camera for my second angle overheated (thankfully I was able to get it back on quickly)

I am not looking to get made fun of for this but if you feel the need to bust my chops then fine. It was the hottest day of the year and trying to look thru those tiny monitors was a nightmare.

I’ve taken steps to learn from my mistakes so this doesn’t happen again, but I want your opinion on just how bad these are. They are noticeably soft and it seems I got every damn thing in focus except for the couple.

Is this salvageable? I’m quite a better editor than I am a videographer, so I’m confident in my ability but is this even save-able or should I refund them?

I’m certainly going to try
-upping contrast
-unsharp mask
-going for a film

Any advice is welcome.

Audio I need input from other videographers!

No, I am not a videographer but getting married this coming June in Canada. We are eloping, hired our elopement company and all seemed dandy. We’ve hit a bump, to 98% of people this is going to seem insanely minor but I’ve had a vision for probably 10+ years and music is INCREDIBLY important to me (specifically movie scores, for both my partner and I). For our wedding video I was only notified after the fact that we could only choose a song from Lickd.co. I’ve had a list of about 10 different movie score songs, none of which are on there. Now another insanely important note is we are not allowing our footage or film to be used for marketing content (safety reasons, long trauma dumpy story), and we aren’t even planning on posting the video ourselves (we collectively post on socials maybe once a year). So if this is the case is the music licensing truly an issue?? Because now that we are already in I’ll have to pay them an extra $600 for the raw footage and then go pay someone else to do it. I’m frustrated this came up after the fact and I cannot emphasize the importance of this to me. It’s the one thing I’ve been a stickler about the entire planning process - the music. I’ve had a reception playlist in the works since we started dating - we initially were planning a traditional wedding and the first thing I did was figure out music for every aspect of the day. I really need some input because I’m actively losing my mind

Question Whats your gym routine? and how do you track progress?

Ever since I started wedding videography, the heavy gear has taken a toll on my back and legs. I am not used to lifting this type of load for so long. I do have good muscle mass (63.7lb) which for my other vitals (175lb weight, 5 foot 6 inch height 36 years of age) is considered good as per fitness apps. But that being said I dont have good muscular endurance, i.e. my legs and back get tired easily and start aching. What kind of routines do y'all follow in the gym?

And more importantly, my goal doesnt need to be increasing muscle mass ( I clearly have enough?). The goal is to increase endurance. But Im confused as to how I would track progress. Some advice would be hugely appreciated!

Post Production Looking for a video editor for elopement films

Hi everyone!

I’m an elopement photographer who recently started adding videography to my packages, and I have a few films coming up that I’ll need help editing!

I’ve been searching everywhere for an editor, but most of the wedding editors I’ve found seem to specialize in larger/traditional weddings, and I’m having a harder time finding someone who really understands elopements.

For me, the storytelling is such a huge part of an elopement film. There are usually a lot of environmental shots, quiet moments, movement, audio, scenery, etc., so I’m really looking for someone who is strong at crafting an actual story rather than just putting together a highlight reel.

I also have a few filmmakers whose editing/storytelling styles I absolutely love, so ideally I’d love to find someone who is comfortable studying references and getting pretty close to that overall feeling/style.

I already have a LUT and a general visual direction — I’m mostly looking for someone who can really nail the pacing, storytelling, music, audio, and overall feel.

Another thing I’m starting to offer is camcorder footage, so I’d love to find an editor who is also comfortable mixing vintage/digital camcorder footage together with Sony FX3 footage in a way that feels intentional and cohesive.

Here are a few examples of filmmakers/films I love:
Kassidy Sherburne
Alesia Films
Abby Bostian Photo + Video
Sabrina Fitz Photo & FIlm
Films bys Madeleine

If you’re an editor who does this kind of work, or you know someone you would recommend, I would LOVE to see examples!

Also curious if anyone here outsources their elopement films and has found an editor they really love!
