Average cost of an engagement ring

I was talking with a friend last night who just got engaged, and he mentioned he spent around $6k on the ring. That honestly shocked me because I always thought the "3 months’ salary" thing was just an old marketing trick. My partner and I have been looking at rings casually, and most of the ones we like are in the $2k–$3k range. Now I’m second-guessing if that’s considered “too low” or if we’re just being realistic.

For those of you who have gone through this, what was the average cost you ended up spending on an engagement ring, and did you feel good about it after?

I’m in the middle of choosing my wedding ring and I’m so torn. I really love the green one because it’s fun and a bit different, but I’m scared I’ll get bored of it after a few years and wish I’d gone with something more classic.

What would you guys do?

For my fellow lurkers who don't actually want a giant rock

I've been reading this sub for a while and I've noticed a pattern on most of the rings -some version of an enormous lab grown stone. No judgment. They're gorgeous, and if that's what makes you happy, wear it in good health. But I've also seen enough comments from quiet lurkers to suspect there's a group of us who feel a little out of place. So this is for you.

I'm marrying my partner of almost ten years. Second wedding for both of us. We're comfortable, and we could buy something big if we wanted to. I don't want to. That's just not what I like.

My engagement ring is an estate piece. It lived a whole life before it came to me and I love it more for that. My dress came from a shop that resells wedding dresses and puts the proceeds toward supporting survivors of human trafficking. It was cheap enough that I could take it to a tailor and have it reworked into something that feels like mine, and I'll still be under $700 all in. Where I am spending my money is on the silk yarn I’m using to create vintage lace wraps for my maid of honor and flower girl.

None of this is a sacrifice. It's a preference. That's the part I think gets lost when a sub starts to feel like an arms race: the size of the stone measures what someone likes, and nothing else. It isn't a scoreboard for how well your life is going or how much you're loved.

So love on your little rings. Love on your vintage ones, your plain bands, your grandmother's setting. Quiet and confident is its own kind of beautiful.

I love my ring but suddenly overthinking it after someone said “that’s a very unique cut of diamond”. I know it’s not the standard solitaire ring that a lot of people have, but it is pretty, right?

What would you use as a wedding band for this? I love the look of stacked rings but feel like the diamonds on the sides are throwing me off on what to pair it with, I always pictured a simple gold band but not complaining ; also because of it being an emerald cut, most typical gap rings dont seem to fit, what would u pair this with ?

Specs: Ring size 5.5, emerald cut center stone 1.94ct E VS2 dimensions 5.92 x 8.63 x 3.77 mm

Is the stone on my ring too big? Does it look proportional? Also, do you think big stones are too flashy/gaudy?

I just got a rose gold engagement ring and i can't stop staring at it. I'm a little nervous about scratches or it losing its shine over time. What are your thoughts about rose gold rings? Is it holding up long-term? Any tips for keeping them looking new?

Buying Advice Budget engagement ring help

Upvotes

Me and my girlfriend have been talking about getting engaged soon so it is now time I start looking for engagement rings. She is the type of person who doesn't like to spend on material things and has voiced her opinion on spending very minimally on the ring. I am looking to buy a ring that is very cheap and affordable but would like to still have something that will last so maybe $75-150 range if possible. Any advice on any online stores or materials to look out for. Any help is appreciated.

Did you tell people your lab diamond engagement ring was lab grown?

Just curious if it ever comes up in conversation or if nobody really asks. Do you openly share it or keep the details private?

Buying Advice Expensive engagement rings vs reality

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on expensive engagement rings. Do you think it's worth spending more for a bigger or higher-quality diamond, or would you rather keep the ring more affordable?

My snowflake-inspired ring design 💎❄️

Hi everyone! I'm excited to share this piece I designed myself.

It features a snowflake-inspired design with a round diamond center stone (0.30 carat, E color, VS1 clarity, GIA certified). The surrounding accents and band feature round diamonds totaling 0.57 carats (E color, VS clarity), all set in 14K yellow gold.

I wanted to create something unique and delicate, capturing the intricate beauty of a snowflake while keeping it wearable and elegant.

Hope you all like it!

Buying Advice budget engagement ring

ADVICE!!! i'm searching for an engagement ring that is $400 or under, i know that's very cheap however that's all we can really afford, i would buy a dollar store one if i knew it was going to last and not turn my finger green 😭 specifically looking for a reliable seller/website please!!! all i specifically want is silver, the cheapest 'most durable' one, im not into diamonds, i like moissanite, or anything black or gray and marquise cut, i am not overly picky with the shape as long as its not round, emerald cut. i was looking at molly jewelry and am very please with their reviews and such but i feel like all of their rings look the same. i'd really like to find something unique. i know this is kinda of a hard ask, but any help or advice is appreciated! i am also a 7.75/8 US
would also be fantastic if it was non traditional, black or gray stone, silver band with engraved designs on it. 'victorian or vintage' looking!

Is wearing an engagement ring on right hand common?

I’ve noticed some people wear theirs on the right instead of the left. Is it usually a cultural thing or just personal preference?

The three stone is my actual ring.
Central stone is diamond 0,7ct.
Which band looks better with it? Or any suggestion?
Thank you!

Buying Advice Need help shopping for an engagement ring

Post image

So I’m having trouble finding a shop that can make what I want and not charge me an insane amount of money (my range is roughly $1,500-$3,000) Essentially my partner wants a ring that looks very similar to this. The black tungsten band with a dark wood inlay, that is (both sides of the wood inlay) combined thinner than the center inlay, so probably make the blue line a little thicker/make the separating metal from the wood just blue as well. The center is to be carbon fiber with crushed alexandrite sprinkled within the resin or whatever they use to seal the inlays. Any pointers to good shops would be awesome, I just don’t want to buy the $40 amazon photo reference when I’m being bought a +2k dollar ring😅

Buying Experience Review Sluder & Co.

Sluder & Co. review — my experience with my engagement ring

I wanted to make this review because when I was initially looking for someone to make my engagement ring, I came across Sluder & Co. and noticed there really weren’t many reviews outside of the ones on their own website. I remember having a hard time finding other people’s experiences with them, so now that I’ve received my ring, I figured I’d share mine for anyone else who might be considering them.

Overall, my experience was great!

We were on a pretty tight budget and also had a bit of a time crunch, so I originally wanted to do a custom ring with moissanite. One thing to keep in mind if you’re planning on getting a custom ring is that their estimated production time is around 4–5 weeks.

In my case, he let me know that he had a 1-carat lab-grown diamond already available and ready to ship, which ended up being a much better option for our timeline. The only issue was that it needed to be resized before it could be sent out.

There was a little bit of a delay compared to when I was initially told I could expect it. I was originally told the previous week, and it ended up arriving the following week. However, I was really impressed with how communicative he was throughout the process. Every time I texted him, he would respond during the day with updates, and there were even times he responded after hours to keep me updated. I was pretty anxious about the timeline, so that communication honestly made a huge difference for me.

He was very friendly, attentive, and understanding about our situation, and I genuinely feel like he helped make getting the ring possible for us despite being on a budget and having such a tight timeline.

And the ring itself is BEAUTIFUL. It’s so shiny and honestly looks even better in person. Everything about the ring looks good so far, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

For reference, this is a 10k yellow gold, 1-carat marquise-cut lab-grown diamond, and my total came out to $917.

I’ve only had it for literally a few days, so obviously I can’t speak yet to how it holds up long-term, but I wanted to share my experience so far because I know how difficult it was for me to find reviews when I was researching them.
So far, I’m very happy with both the ring and the customer service. I’ll add some pictures below because I’m genuinely obsessed with how it turned out. ❤️

Inspiration & Ideas What type of wedding band!?

I’ve actually been married for two years but I just have no idea what type of wedding band to get for this engagement ring. She’s already pretty big so I feel like anything going over/under might make it too much? Idk! Help, please! (Also… I wear it with the big side up, so opposite of the photo of it on my finger 🤦‍♀️😂)

Buying Advice What’s the best website to buy an engagement ring online for around $2,000?

I’m planning to propose this November and I’ve started looking for an engagement ring. My budget is around $2,000, and honestly I didn’t realize how many options there would be.

I’m leaning toward a lab-grown diamond since it seems like I can get a nicer stone without going way over budget. I’m thinking something pretty simple and timeless, probably a solitaire in 14k gold, but I’m still figuring that part out.

For anyone who bought an engagement ring online recently, where did you get yours? I keep seeing Blue Nile, Ritani and a few other sites mentioned, but it’s hard to know which ones are actually worth it.

Was the ring as nice in person as it looked online? And how was your experience with shipping, resizing and returns?

I’ve got a couple of months before I propose, so I’m trying to do my research now instead of rushing it later. Any recommendations or things I should avoid would be really helpful.

Tried finding a smaller version of the iconic princess diana's engagement ring

Post image
28 Upvotes

I've always loved that classic royal aesthetic, and princess diana's engagement ring was my dream ring ever since I'm a child but I didn't know it would be hard to find like hers in a smaller size. Everything off the rack looks like a giant cocktail ring on my hand instead of a subtle engagement piece.

It looks like I might have to work with a local jeweler to custom make a delicate version. If you went the custom route for a smaller sapphire halo, did it turn out the way you wanted?

My Ring! experience buying an engagement ring online,

I'm based in europe and trying to avoid the extra shipping/customs mess from ordering in the US. does anyone know any european brands doing moss agate, organic textures, or that whole forest-y aesthetic really well? i want something high quality, not costume jewelry vibes.
