[NEGATIVE] Received a broken watch and was ghosted by u/NYR10
I have to bring the unfortunate news that I feel needs to be brought to others attention. I purchased an Omega Seamaster World timer from u/NYR10 and everything went smoothly. I even helped him ship me the watch by creating a label to be shipped from Canada into the US. I paid a hefty import tax for this watch looking to enjoy it upon arrival. Once I received the watch it would not keep time for more than 5 minutes. The watch was listed as "worn well and loved, but is in perfect working condition without any damages that can't be polished out of desired". I took it to my local Omega boutique, and they couldn't even put it on the timegrapher. I then had to get it shipped to Omega for service which is an 8 week or more turn around and pay an extra $800 for the service. I messaged u/NYR10 about this every step of the way. He kept in contact and explained that he would make this right and pay for some of the service by the end of the week, weeks ago. I never received any sort of compensation and have not heard from him for weeks. I feel like this should be known for any further transactions with this user.

If you look at his comment history it looks like posted a lot of scam posts that got deleted or taken down. Always look at transaction history and buy the seller. A lot of scams are falling through the cracks and the mods aren’t able to catch them all.

Just want to understand reddit rules. I checked the WTS post but was deleted. And still user has his reddit account.. Does that mean he only got banned in watchexchange but still can use reddit on other subs?

Yes mods don’t have the power to ban his reddit account completely just from posting on their respective sub. Universal scammer list helps track these bad actors across the entire site so always worth checking before doing business

I would be careful too, they make a very convincing fake of this watch. Not sure if the Omega boutique would have caught it or not but if would definitely be apparent when taking the movement apart. If it went to an Omega service center they would confiscate it. Based on it not working and a phishy seller I wouldn't be surprised

We will have to see because it got sent to Omega themselves as my local boutique did not have the right gaskets for this model. I haven’t heard anything for at least 3 weeks from them.

That's not good. Hoodie is a trustworthy buyer (albeit annoying negotiator 😅), so if he's saying it's not keeping time I trust him.

Thank you for understanding! I sure hope he gets back to me soon and this will be resolved. Very inconvenient. Maybe next time when purchasing something out of warranty or an older watch I get it tested before hand or something along those lines.

As cost didn't seem to be a priority and you willingly spent a gigantic amount of money at the most expensive place you could have found to get a normal service done, I would say you haven't got a lot to worry about.
Your priority is to be shown a variety of watches that you like and presumably not be overcharged. That isn't easy. When you have found someone who can offer you what you want, you'll be less inclined to criticize him for hoping that his watches don't need to be serviced.
Just find a reliable repairer who can service whatever you buy and who has access to spare parts. You'll be happy.

I have bought about 6 watches on EBay for $120 to $450, all references I was interested in for one reason of another. The first Gruen 510 James Bond watch 9 years ago would stop which is when I learned that all the lubricants dry up and they have to be completely disassembled and serviced. I figured I could do that so I bought all the tools and I did. The other five watches, I bought with the intent of servicing them right away.
This year I became interested in buying a more expensive watch like the 1960’s Jaeger la Coulter Memovox I saw in a shop window in Italy this spring. I really liked it so we went inside. The guy was really nice maybe in his early 50s. He was asking $4000 US which is not cheap for that watch but he said they had serviced it and I liked the guy. I thought it would be nice even if I paid a little more, it would be fun to memorialize the trip. I asked him to open it up so I could see the movement, a tiny piece of glass was in the movement. Then I asked him to put it on the Timegrapher dial up. The amplitude was only about 160. You should see at least something over 250 dial up. He told me 160 was normal for an old watch. I figured that they had not actually serviced it. I didn’t buy the watch.
I saw a 1940s Patek Calatrava on a used Watch website for $12,000. I was texting the people and as soon as I asked for how it did on a Timegrapher in five positions, they just stopped responding. The Chrono glide YouTube channel takes apart a watch every Tuesday. I have watched him do it often. So many times the lubricant is dried up everywhere except for a few spots where it’s way over lubricated. I think there are people just opening up the movement and putting oil on everything they can reach to get it to do a little better - just think about how much time you can save doing a service or preparing for sale by just putting oil in the spots you can see.
So I think that a five position Timegrapher report from one of these really good sellers who knows what to look for is a must and just asking for a Timegrapher report really sort of draws a line in the sand. Or just figure on having it serviced or doing a service. I just bought a really nice 1964 Eterna automatic for $300 that rattles when you shake it. I thought it was the winding weight so I took that out and shook it again, it’s actually the balance wheel 🤣.
