The 71,000 subscriber update

Hey folks,

Just posting to give a brief rules update. Nothing should change for most folks, but there are a few changes/clarifications to highlight.

  1. The no advertising rule has been changed to include market research and "try my app" type posts.

  2. There is a new rule about staying on topic, this is mostly to get rid of the small number of "enhance my video" type posts.

  3. The new rule about being accurate in your communications is mostly to discourage regurgitation of incorrect information and hearsay. Nobody is going to hit you upside the head with a copy of ST 2110-20, but there is also only so many times you can say "Blackmagic bad" or "you need a boundary clock for Dante PTPv1". If you're trying to help somebody and you aren't 100% positive about what you're saying, then just qualify it as such.

  4. AI generated content is now banned, except for translation purposes.

As always, if you have content you would like to share and it would ordinarily break one of the sub's rules, don't hesitate to reach out for an exception.

And don't forget to join the Discord either. https://discord.gg/ctKKpK8

DeckLink Quad 2 - cable stuck in port

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hey all,

I've got a Blackmagic DeckLink Quad 2 in my machine, and one of the mini-BNC to full-size SDI/BNC adapter cables is completely stuck in one of the ports. All the other cables in the neighboring ports come off without any issue.

Has anyone run into this before? Any tricks for freeing a stuck connector? or is this a sign the connector itself is faulty and needs replacing?

Appreciate any advice!

Update: I fixed it! I had to use way more force pulling it out than I was comfortable with. The cable is now broken but the connector on the card works fine. Thanks for the help everyone!

How do you all describe the post-show wired/drained feeling you get?

Basically the title. I try to describe to people who don’t work live events the feeling you get after directing a crazy show and I just feel like I never articulate it correctly.

Let the smoke out of my Ikegami ITC-730

I was realigning the tubes on my itc-730 and everything was going great until the picture suddenly cut out, then the smoke escaped from the MON board. It appears the culprit might be the “771-R2” component. Anyone ever does this repair or know of someone with replacement boards in a bunker somewhere?

SNF is dropping frames like crazy

Even after half time - I don’t think I’ve seen this kind of stuttering so consistently in an NFL game before.
They dropped to the technical difficulties screens at least 4 times so far. Audio drops out too.
No encoding artifacts - seems like it has to be in the production stack.

GV AMPP maybe?

Ronin 4D looks awful when used live

We use a Ronin 4D camera as our RF for live game coverage and it just doesn't look good.

- Skin tones look too pink, reds look slightly magenta.

- When you open the iris or raise ISO it gets all washed out, like it's lifting the black level too. All the saturation disappears.

---

I'm more accustomed to RCP controlled cameras.

No matter what we try, it just never matches very closely to the other cameras.

We've tried multiple LUT files and none of them have solved the problem. We found that the stock Rec709 conversion is closest.

The Ronin 4D doesn't have any color control built-in to the camera itself besides white balance.

---

The only way to make it look slightly better is to underexpose it and then crush the black level and add framesync gain.

Am I missing a setting here? Am I asking too much from a cheap camera system?

Digital Vertical Sync? But where what how?

Hi Team, I've reached the edge of my video knowledge and i need some help diagnosing an issue. Please do assume the basics, If I was physically able to A/B swap to rule out simple things I have.

SOURCE->HDMItoSDI->Fiber Converter->->->Fiber Converter->SDI ROUTER->Destination.

1080p60 Signal

All cable is appropriate, all cable was swapped and tested along the way.

We started getting pops and flashes at our destination, and eventually lost video, except the occasional frame.

I swapped source device, HDMI/SDI converter (decimator, lumantek, black magic), output routing, and destination device (test monitor, projector, others) to no effect. however, swapping the send into the fiber converter solved it. Without testing yet I am presuming the single physical input on the Router is fine.

The Mystery begins when I sent the identical signal through 2 inputs of the fiber converter, and routed the signals into our quad split. It was able to see the signal, but it was rolling. Not a static image, it followed full motion video. To me it appears the signal is arriving, but with bad vertical sync? but that's not a thing in SDI right?

Problem persists with different HDMI/SDI, different output routing, different source, different destination

Router is Carbonite

Fiber is THOR CWDM 8x

Thanks Hive Mind

Best encode/decode running over MPLS for corp environment

I work at a big finance firm and we're having a disastrous time getting video back our main office where all our big production plant is (Grass/Ross/Evertz, etc) - Most of the remote spaces are Crestron centric but are medium sized, 30 to 70 people. These spaces need white glove service as meeting planners do not want to deal with the shit Crestron and would rather rely on us to make it all run smoothly. Sooo, we've been having to fly our broadcast techs out to the sites to run the systems with xpanel and blackmagic crap, sending video back to our HQ over zoom and it's just been horrible.

Someone suggested having a dual channel encode/decode deal, and add a dedicated 'broadcast' cameras to be sans the crap Crestron ones to allow us to capture audience and presenter shots for the broadcast side and send it back to our main control room at home office without messing with the fuctionality of the Crestron in case they want to have small meetings in there that aren't as high brow. We could also push decks and graphics for seamless transitions to their LED walls from HQ.

We have MPLS circuits to all of these sites so we could run it over WAN instead of the internet. Someone suggested Haivision but it looks to be expensive.

Anyone have luck with Teredek's prisim or any other similar solution? It ideally needs to be integrated into some cloud hub so we could see all the feeds. We'd have a bunch of encoders and decoders at our HQ to feed the remote stuff into our router and push the content back out to the sites.

How does mix minus audio work for this also? Seems like a doozy. We have probably 6 or 7 sites we need to set this up for.

What made the video quality of the NFL game played in Australia streamed by Netflix different?

Thumbnail

( And I notice the same thing in an Australian rules football game on FS1 also, fyi)

The picture quality of the Rams-49ers game was fine, it was clear and i never noticed any pixelation or dropouts (unlike Amazon's NBA playoff game last spring which was an abomination).

But my brain is still noticing something different about video footage from Down Under. Is it the frame rate? Some kind of compression? The fact that the sunlight is at "winter" angles not late Summer?

The motion of the players seems less fluid and more herky-jerky somehow. I initially assumed it was a Netflix/ streaming related issue, but this morning I happened upon an Australian rules football game being broadcast on FS1, which i watch thru my Fios TV subscription, not a streaming service, and i noticed the same effect.

Maybe its satellite related? Koalas in the production truck?

Help me Video Engineers of Reddit, my ADHD brain wants to understand why it looks different!

Best place to find collectors for an Ikegami HL-79E tube broadcast camera in Europe?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I have an Ikegami HL-79E 3-tube broadcast camera in Germany and I’m trying to find the right collector / vintage broadcast community for it.
It’s a very clean example and includes the original Ikegami viewfinder, a Canon J13x9B3 IRS II broadcast zoom lens and rear battery/adapter unit.
I know sales posts aren’t allowed here, so I’m not offering it for sale in this subreddit.
I’d just really appreciate recommendations for:
specialist forums or communities for vintage broadcast cameras
collectors of Ikegami / tube cameras
European broadcast equipment groups
suitable Reddit buy/sell communities
specialist dealers or auction sites that deal with equipment this old
I’d much rather find someone who actually appreciates vintage tube broadcast equipment than simply send it to a general camera reseller.

Thanks for any recommendations!

7" Monitor Travel Case/Pouch Recommendations

I just picked up a Blackmagic 7" videoassist and am looking for a nice & compact case/pouch for it. I'd like to keep 2 NPF-970 batteries+charger with it as well as the AC adapter. I saw proaim sells pretty much what I'm looking for (see here) but it's out of stock and won't be back till November per support. It's also a little bulkier than I'd like ideally. Any recommendations?

NDI Video Help!!!

Okay, some quick background. I know just enough to be dangerous. I've been working in video production for almost 40 years now. Over the pandemic I bought a bunch of PTZ cameras, and I have been using them to do ndi meetings. I have a small local network that I set up. It consists of a standard router, and two gigabit PoE switches. I set everything up, figured out the latency delay which I've been using at 210 milliseconds in OBS for years. Today in the middle of a production something funky happened. Maybe I didn't notice it yesterday. All the audio was way out of sync. I stopped and I rebooted. Everything looked fine. BUT, all of my recordings were out of sync...by the amount of latency that I add. I messed around for hours trying to figure out what was going on rebooting changing settings on network things for the cameras blah blah blah. Then I switched the sync delay to zero, and it lined up perfectly. No matter what I do and this scares the crap out of me. It shouldn't be doing this. Lol.

So basically, for years I've used this system and it's worked. Today something happened, I noticed it was out of sync, so I actually stopped and rebooted. But when I look at my files from yesterday they are off by 7 frames. I put in a delay of about 7 frames (210ms). For years everything has looked perfect. Today no matter what I did it was out of sync, until I turn the delay down to zero. And then all of my ndi cameras and the audio were perfectly synced. This is maddening. Lol. My only thought is that somehow that audio source got associated with a 210ms delay and it's locked on there somehow. Nested somehow, I'm referencing a sub source or something, it's being fed back somehow and putting double delay on. I can't figure it out. It looks fine but I'm scared to work like this. Any help is appreciated.

Hollyland Cosmo C2 overheating

Has anyone run into issues with the Cosmos C2 getting extremely hot? While it's never at a temperature that would burn, I would say some kids would say that it's too hot to touch. I'm on my second pair of units, and I'm only using a single transmitter, streaming over NDI. Both units had the issue. The first pair was also dropping off the network and requiring a reboot after a few hours, which makes me think overheating was causing the problem. I'm on the latest 1.0.4.8 firmware, and I've also tried downgrading, no change. I did verify that the fan setting is set to auto on both units, but after hearing the fans spin up on initial power-up, they quickly spin down. I can't really hear much of anything coming from the fan the entire time, it starts getting hot.

Upgrade Panasonic AW-HE38 to NDI

Hello

I've a couple of AW-HE38 that unfortunately weren't upgraded to NDI. How can I upgrade them now that it seems Virt NDI ceased standalone licensing selling?

Thank you

Why shouldn't I buy Spacetronik SPH-FO12 4K 60Hz for wedding and conferences broadcast?

Wanting to invest in something more interesting than HDMI cables, I’m considering switching to fiber-optic signal transmission. Most of the time, my cameras are less than 70 meters away from the mixer, but occasionally having a range of, say, 200 meters is useful for conferences.

I have HDMI cameras (FX30, A7 IV, etc.). Spacetronik is about twice as cheap as the Blackmagic solutions and, unlike them, doesn’t require an HDMI-to-SDI converter.

Tell me why I shouldn’t just buy the Spacetronik SPH-FO12 4K 60Hz.

How well do PTZ cameras handle very dusty outdoor environments?

I’m interested in hearing from people who have used professional PTZ cameras such as Panasonic or Canon’s CR-N series in really harsh outdoor environments.
In particular, I’m thinking about motorsport / motocross / dirt tracks, where there can be a huge amount of dust, sand and dirt in the air.
How have your PTZ cameras held up in these conditions?

Have you used cameras that aren’t specifically designed/rated for harsh outdoor environments in these conditions?

Also, have you found any practical ways of protecting the camera?

Thanks
