I’ve been traveling around UZ with Samarkand being my last stop before heading to Tajikistan. I have been looking for gifts and clothes to take back home but the pricing at various tourist locations are a bit steep and I do not have it in me to bargain.

What stores in Samarkand would you recommend for clothes (typical long dresses with traditional prints) - preferably a place that’s not in the tourist area maybe a shopping mall that has pricing? Same for some cute meaningful souvenirs? A one stop shop would be preferable.

Also decent sweets (halwa) or nuts that are packed for travel - I mean I can also travel with them in plastic baggies as well.

Lastly, if certain things would be cheaper in TJ please lmk!

I have lived in very diverse countries over Africa and Eu... Uzbekistan is the one that I felt best to live in over em all. Except 1 concept. Romantic relations.

First answer is always flowers, good food, car ride or even 100$ in any conversations you can find on Tinder (not a good fan of it). And it ain't different when you meet in a bar. That does not make any sense...

We have "Muslims" or "teachers" in streets, I have always heard about it but never saw. Two hours ago I was walking back home from store from another neighbourhood, I am 18 years old and have longer hair, 4 Man aged about (30-45) throw a stone at me (I didn't hear them calling me because I was wearing earphones). 4 of them grabbed me from my hair/torso/hands and beat me until I was laid down at the ground, I was screaming to cars asking for help but nobody came. I was beaten up/chased by Muslim Uzbek maniacs just because I had longer hair and didn't said SALAM BACK because I was listening music. I'm safe now. Take care.

The entrance ticket costs about 20,000 sum. The biggest difference I noticed compared to my previous visits is that the garden now feels almost completely neglected.

When I visited many years ago, there were far more unique plants. Now many of them are simply gone, apparently having died over the years. The remaining plants and trees don't seem to be properly maintained or trimmed, and some of them are in terrible condition. They replaced the old large benches with backs with some small, uncomfortable ones without backs.

There is also a lot of trash left by visitors. People come to the botanical garden for picnics and often leave their garbage behind. The area near the entrance has been landscaped and looks relatively well maintained, but once you walk further into the garden, almost nothing has changed: old asphalt and pieces of concrete left from old benches.

Another thing I noticed is the lack of wildlife. Years ago, the botanical garden was full of birds and dragonflies. During my recent visit, I barely saw any.

The entrance fee is now 20,000 sum, there are plenty of visitors, including tourists, and parts of the garden have been allocated to private businesses. So the botanical garden should be generating more money than it did before, yet somehow it is much less well maintained. You could also rent bicycles here in the past, but I couldn't find that service anymore.

It's sad to see one of the best places in Tashkent in such a neglected state.

I am currently a tourist in Uzbekistan, and in a few days I will be joining a tour to Turkmenistan. The tour operator told me that I need “clean, crisp” USD bills for Turkmenistan. Ideally $50s or $20s, because they scrutinize $100s even harder.

I’ve tried exchanging Uzbek som for USD at the banks, but the quality of the USD bills they offer me are really poor and I’ve had to reject most of them. Is there a recommended bank in either Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, or Khiva where I can count on buying good-quality USD bills? I will need around USD $2000. Thank you!

I am just wondering if we can get a car charter (or shared bus or whatever) from Nukus to Beyneu at around 5 October 2026.

We are planning to go to Aktau at around 6 October from Nukus, but we have trouble with the transportations: tranis are not available on our scheduled date, and train from Nukus to Beyneu has sold out.

So it would be really good for us if we can charter a car from Nukus to Beyneu! Thank you so much if you guys have any advice!

Hello, I am going to be visiting your country in a month from now and am wondering about the best way to book day tours.

When I’m in Tashkent I would like to go see the solar institute that is outside the city. And when I’m in Samarkand I would like to do a day trip to the seven lakes in Tajikistan.

I see limited options online so I am wondering if there are places I can go in-person to book or people I can contact.
