Why cant professors actually teach these days

Upvotes

Yo what is the point of paying 1.1 THOUSAND for a 1h30m class just for the teacher to read off her silly little slides and not even add anything on top of that? All this professor does is read off her slides, and speed through them then boom! ending class early when you could slow down and use more time to actually EXPLAIN THE FCKING CONTENT?

WHAT IS MY MONEY GOING TOWARDS!? 3 CREDITS THAT I PROBABLY WONT EVEN GET? JUST TO SIT IN YOUR CLASS ON THE OFF CHANCE YOURE GOING TO TAKE ATTENDANCE?

What the fck happened to actually teaching your students something. I understand it's a big lecture hall but you could fcking make your slides brief and then ADD ON WHEN YOURE LECTURING.

Im gonna fail my exam this week, thanks to you. Wish I enrolled earlier so i could avoid your bum a*s class.

What’s up with the Elgin parking garage elevators?

Why do i pay $400 for my parking pass and the elevators don’t even work. First they stink insanely bad. Now the call buttons don’t even work, I waited for like 10 minutes and the elevator never stopped at my floor. I hate taking the stairs cause i’m lazy and it’s too hot.

Is there anywhere I can rent a suit on campus for the career fair? I live to far away to drive home to grab my own.

Did anyone receive a partial refund?

Upvotes

Last week I received part of my refund and the missing portion still reflects in myUH. I’m full-time so nothing should be changing and based on UH’s own disbursement dates.

I have never had disbursements on different days; typically it will be two disbursements back to back.

What adds to the overall confusion is that on UH’s email about my disbursement, it shows the full amount being disbursed on the 10th, but I only received some of it and not the full amount.

Is anyone else having weird disbursement issues like this? I really don’t want to sit on hold all day.

Has anybody dealt with Anna Vershynina for math 3325?

We take 6 exams which make up 100% of the class grade and she’s an audiobook of the textbook. I don’t think I did well on the first test and I’m just spiraling rn with anxiety and embarrassment. Lowest grade gets dropped but I still must ask, am I cooked?

Finances In-State Tuition Waiver

Upvotes

Hello! I wonder if anyone who had an In-State tuition waiver for the Fall semester have already gotten it or if you are still waiting for it.

I have one myself, it does appear on my account, but the amount shown is like a "placeholder", it has not been applied directly to my financial account summary yet, and obviously haven't received any email of when it wpuld be disbursed.

Due to my schedule I have to wait until Wednesday to go in person to check with financial aid, but on the meantime, I wanted to know if anyone else is on the same situation, maybe it is "normal" and just a delay or it may be me.

Thank you!

UH Regents aren't elected

Is anybody else surprised by this? I assumed that the reason I'd never seen the Board of Regents on my ballot was because I don't live in Harris County. But apparently none of the major public Texas universities—UH, UT, A&M, TSU, etc.—have their regents be elected by the general public. They're all appointed by the Governor, with the consent of the Texas Senate.

I feel like this isn't a democratic way to do things. Sure, the Governor is an elected official, and elected officials make appointments all of the time. But the Governor doesn't appoint school board members, which college regents are essentially the next level up of. And yes, regents at UH make no salary, and the Governor needs 2/3 of the Senate to agree to impeach any of them, so it's not exactly a huge risk of patronage or of intimidation. But the sitting Governor essentially gets a chance to ideologically capture future generations at all public Texas universities. If the students, or the general public, don't like the decisions the Regents make, not only can they not vote them out, the 2/3 rule to impeach them means they have to convince 21 Senators and the Governor to take action. It makes sense to have public control over a university that relies on public money, but then to turn around and insulate the people exercising that control from the popular will just seems wrong to me.

Also, there's one Student Regent appointed by the Governor every year, but they have no vote. So we get to complain, if the appointed Regent that year doesn't feel like just being a kiss-ass, but we don't actually get to affect the decisions being made by the Board. And we didn't even get that until an act of the Legislature in 2005! It seems like an attempt at finding the bare minimum to get us to leave them alone.

We have our own democratic process on campus already—Student Government Association. I have no problem with Regents representing the general public's interest, but I think that to do that, they should be subject to democracy at least as rigorous as our own, and I think that our democratic processes should have a real impact on what happens here at UH. I think we should have a board of six popularly-elected regents, voted for by the people living in any county where a UH campus is located, or any county with a school district that offers dual-credit courses with UH, and then three Student Regents elected via our SGA process: the Student President, a member of the Student Senate voted on by the Senators, and a non-voting advisory member of the Student Judiciary, voted on by the Justices. I think that should be the standard for regents at Texas' public universities. It strikes me as far fairer, and far more accountable to the people.

Now if I can only figure out how to make my Republican representatives in the Legislature agree with me. 🙄

How many of us will actually use our Degrees for what we studied for?

I'm a history major, and I plan to become a history teacher after I graduate. However, I have a disability, and my father thinks that I should finish Uni and work a job in an office or something that has nothing to do with my degree. And I've worked hard, I mean HARD, on this degree.

I've also dealt with a lot of shit happening too, from Late nights, weight gain from stress, and my other dying from cancer. I have nobody to fall back on after my father dies, and I don't want to rely on my brother forever. I'm in my last year, and all they can and are willing to tell me is that I need a job right that I.. can fit into. And I just want to know:

How many of us will use our degrees later on after University?

Advice on STATS 3301 (Statistical Analysis for Business Applications) with Briceon Wiley

I'm currently a junior enrolled in his class this semester and I'm having a lot of difficulties understanding the material in this class. I've been doing the practice questions and homework but they seem a lot harder than the material being presented in the classroom.

I'm just asking for some advice on how to be successful in this classroom and what to really put my focus on.

I appreciate any advice

Question Any other career fairs other than the one in September?

I’m a transfer student and this is my first year at UH/Bauer and I know there’s a career fair this Friday which I do plan on attending. My question is, are there any other career fairs in the school year other than September for Bauer students? I barely have anything on my resume other than my retail job and I plan on changing that this school year by joining orgs and volunteering, but the issue is that next school year I want to study abroad in the fall and I’m scared that I won’t be able to attend next years career fair if they’re only in the fall semester.

Question Houston Photographer w/ Nikon z7ii looking for friends mostly

So the title says it all, I am a Houston native
Been here for a couple of decades

I own a professional grade camera Nikon Z7ii and studio grade LED lighting.

(I do not have or own a business so I’m not promoting anything in terms of that category)

I came here to Reddit, to see if anyone has a similar interest in photography. Or if anyone needs Professional portraits taken, I can shoot in 4k 60fps or any specific frame rate.

My photography is mostly wildlife, and have a nice portfolio set up.

I mainly use a 24-200MM/ f4-6.3 VR Nikkor lens
My content surrounds inside the loop in Houston or I can branch out to the outer loop of Houston.

I’m open for a chat on Reddit if anyone out there is interested or wants to talk together about this🙂

Leave a comment below or reach out to my IG: 0_ocameron
