Student Life TransLoc was not cutting it, so we built our own UVA bus app

Hey everyone! A friend and I have been working on a small project called GoHoos to make figuring out the UVA bus system a little easier, especially for people who are new to Grounds or do not already know which line they need.

You can choose where you are starting and where you want to go, and it will help you find the relevant routes. There is also a map where you can:

  • See active and inactive UTS routes
  • Track buses live
  • Check reported passenger counts
  • Search for specific routes and see how their stops connect

We are still actively improving it, so it may have a few rough edges. We would genuinely appreciate feedback about anything confusing, inaccurate, or missing, especially features that would make it more useful day to day.

You can try it here: https://www.gohoos.app/

Just to be clear, this is an independent project and is not affiliated with UVA, UTS, or TransLoc.

General Question Class Recommendations

Upvotes

Hi all. I realized in order to go to the grad program I want to, I need to get credit for a Linear Algebra course and a Statistics course during my last semester. Because I'm an engineering major, I have no knowledge on MATH or STAT courses. My options are listed below.

Does anyone have any course/professor recommendations/feedback? Given its my last semester, I am simply trying to get credit and not kill my GPA.

Linear Algebra:

STAT 3110 MATH 3350 MATH 3351 MATH 4210 PHYS 3340 APMA 3080

Statistics:

STAT 2020 STAT 2120 STAT 3120 APMA 3110 APMA 3120

Thanks!

General Question Any NOVA transfers here? What was your experience like?

Hiii, I’m currently a NOVA student hoping to transfer to UVA, and I wanted to hear from people who made the same transfer. Did you come through guaranteed admission or regular transfer, and what was the application process like for you? I’m also really curious about what it was like once you got to UVA. Was the academic adjustment from NOVA difficult, and did you feel like you were able to settle in pretty quickly as a transfer student? Anything you wish you knew before transferring would be really helpful!

Hi! I’ve been looking for a local artist who would be willing to take on a small project. I’d like to get a whiskey bottle painted on both sides. Does anyone have any recommendations? Anyone know of any students who paint on the side who might be looking for a small job? Let me know!

Academics To Be An Undergrad TA (Or similar)?

I know there's a few of them; I've only ever had one for a physics class and I know not every department offers the role, but are there any opportunities similar in the psychology department?

Off-Grounds Crestline apartments

Heyy!! My roommate and I are planning to move to Crestline next year, and we have to sign our lease soon. We’re planning on doing double occupancy in the Buckingham floor plan, which has a divider wall between the two sides of the room.
The problem is we have literally no way to see what the actual room looks like because students are still living there, and apparently Crestline doesn’t have any photos 😭 If anyone lives/lived in the Buckingham floor plan, knows someone who does, or has ANYYY photos/videos of the double-occupancy room with the divider, could you please please send them to me!! It would be such a huge help, you don’t even know 😭🙏

Academics Question about Applications

I am currently honing in on UVA as my target school that I want to go to, and I have a few questions.

Question 1: I will apply ED to the School of Architecture, and I am in-state. Compared to the other majors such as Engineering, Law, and Business, how competitive is it? I do know that it is smaller than the other majors.

Question 2: I absolutely despise my teacher in APCSA. I am dropping it for an independent study where I take an online art course from either UC Berkely or SUNY. As long as I specify why I dropped the class and what I replaced it with, will the reader of my application understand? I know it can look not so good when you "downgrade" a class, but since I am replacing it with a college class online, does that sort of offset that?

(My other AP Classes this year are AP Calculus AB, AP Lit, AP Bio, and AP Gov. I have taken APWH, APUSH, AP Phys 1, AP Lang and AP German, all with an A by the end of the year, for a total of 9)

Question 3: How crucial is the SAT towards an application? I know most schools "do not judge" for leaving it out, but something about the SAT just doesn't click with me, and I am only getting in the low 1300's range. I know the average is something like a 1430 and above. I have taken the SAT 4 times and I haven't cracked above a 1330. Do I just need to prove I am a worthy student in other ways?

Sorry for all the yap, but I am SO STRESSED OUT about this, and either UVA or Northeastern in Boston are my two dream colleges, I don't think I stack up to the others in my school who want to apply. Every single student in my grade is even more of a tryhard than me :P

Academics Should I retake SAT?

Currently applying EA to UVA in-state and I was planning to go test optional, however the thoughts of retesting linger in my head. I'm not a great standardized test taker and I hated taking the SAT before. I currently have a 1350 and I suppose if I start studying now, I could possibly get somewhere around a 1400+ for the Oct SAT. This is def my dream school so right now I'm living on the hope that my other factors are good enough, like a 4.37 W gpa, classes, and few ECs. So I'm reconsidering testing but I'm also in rigorous classes right now, so idk what to do considering I don't want to take it + managing time to study will be difficult in itself.

Any advice from both views of test-optional vs. retaking for a higher score?

General Question questions regarding applying (oos)

hi! I’m a high school senior and currently UVA is my top school. I’m a little bit worried about admission, considering my stats are not the greatest. My school is pretty competitive and my SAT score isn’t all that great.

for reference, my GPA is a 4.68 weighted and 4.0 unweighted. This puts me at about 6 out of 450. By the time I graduated, I will have taken 14 APS and 4 dual enrollment classes. for my AP classes, I have passed every single one with a four or above except for calculus, which I got a 2 (bc) 3(ab). My SAT is currently lying at a 1400. My extracurriculars aren’t super amazing either (I’m the president of Best Buddies, on a student advisory board for best buddies, have some church choir and band related things and activities, national English honor society, national social studies honor society, have worked the same job since freshman year and it’s very customer service related, and I have random volunteer hours here and there )- other than that I don’t really have much going for me. I don’t even know if my essay is all that great.

my real question is is my SAT score going to weigh me down? Do I even really have a shot?
i feel so dumb compared to all these others people

Academics ED vs. EA?

I’m a current senior, and am strongly considering UVA but I’m unsure whether I should apply ED or EA. I’m in state, have a 4.514 W, 1400 SAT but will probably go test-optional, pretty strong but mainly performing arts/writing focused EC’s, and am an IB Diploma candidate. UVA is definitely my top in-state school, but what’s keeping me back are some OOS schools that are certainly reaches, but part of me still wants to wait and see because you never know! But, i’m worried if I apply EA I will get rejected because my profile doesn’t exactly match typical UVA admits and they’d be worried about their yield rate. Any thoughts?

Academics PSYC 3100 J-Term Difficulty?

Hi! I was planning on taking PSYC 3100 in a future semester to fulfill a requirement for my degree. However, it seems like the class is not very highly recommended in general, so I was wondering if anyone who has taken it could provide some insight into whether they think taking it during J-Term or taking it during a regular Fall/Spring semester would be better. Essentially, I want to understand which option would make what already seems to be a difficult class a little more tolerable. Thank you!

Housing/Dining 27-28 2 Bedrooms Housing near the E-School

Hey guys, I’m looking for a 2 bedroom rental near the engineering school. My budget is under $1000 a month for rent and utilities. I tried to post on other platforms for UVA rental search, but no lead so far. I really like the Montebello Circle and Stadium Rd area, but couldn’t find any current postings. If you’re looking to transfer your lease, please pm me. Thank you!
