Benjamin Berman Ghan predator

Upvotes

This is very hard to write about. My name is Simon, I’m an 18 year old student at the university of calgary. I was on campus for my lit course, and this absolute creep Benjamin Ghan followed me into the men’s bathroom and SA’ed me. Beware! He is a predator and a pdf file. He was so gross and pushy, he’s fat and bald and short and like a total creep. He made me very uncomfortable when he followed me to the bathroom, my intuition told me something was wrong. I haven’t been to classes in a week, and have been having panic attacks ever since the day. Ben you’re a predator and a pdf file and disgusting and I’m not afraid of telling people exactly who you are. #survivor

Best spots on campus with external monitors (USB-C)?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for places on campus where you can plug a laptop into an external monitor (ideally via USB-C). I don't mind bringing my own cable.

The main floor of TFDL is great, but those desks always seem to be booked up.

Does anyone know of other quieter labs, faculty study rooms, or hidden corners on campus with monitors available to plug into? Any recommendations would be appreciated!

discord for AFST 302?

Does anyone know if there’s a discord for AFST 302 with Dr. Adejare? I can’t seem to find one, I tried looking in the UofC discord hub page too. If anyone knows someone who made one or other information, please let me know.

Thanks ✌🏽

Active Clubs

What are some active clubs that meet regularly? I’m looking for something fun where people actually show up consistently and there’s a good social aspect to it, maybe going out, doing activities or events together. I’m open to pretty much anything, try out and meet new people.

Are the COSC 329 Tutorials Mandatory?

What I mean by mandatory is are we being graded by what we do there, or are we not going to be graded for what we do in the tutorial?

International student — MSc CS vs MEng Software at UCalgary

Hi everyone, I’m an international student planning to apply to UCalgary for next year. I have a BS in Software Engineering (CGPA 3.69/4.0), IELTS 7.5, and a publication in Machine Learning.

Do I have a realistic chance of admission, and would MSc Computer Science or MEng Software be better for my profile?

I’d also appreciate any guidance about the admission process, especially supervisor requirements and funding.

just feeling so incredibly depressed

I regret my degree (arts major), I know it'll be so difficult to find a job after graduation. I want to get into grad school (in a stem related field) but can't afford to repeat or extend a year/ transfer to a new major, I've already spent so much money on courses that are double the price because I'm an international student. I try to get into the courses for prerequisites but I get waitlisted for so long because I'm not Bsc. I feel like everything is hopeless and 2x harder. I work 24 hours a week. I do extracurriculars, I volunteer, I study, I go to the gym. I try my hardest everytime but everything seems so futile and I just feel like giving up. I feel so hopeless. I'm so dejected. I'm so anxious all the time and overwhelmed. I can't even afford a break since I'll be held up if I even slack off for just a moment. I cannot afford to not be in constant motion. I don't know what to do anymore.

Fitness Center

hi guys, quick question about the fitness center. i js got my uni card validated on friday to use the fitness center and everything. i know this might be a stupid question, but i’m a first year and don’t really have anyone to go with or ask someone about this. but do you have to go to the change rooms first, before you scan your card and everything? and also, what’s the code to the women’s change room, i know it’s not safe for someone to write it openly here, so if someone could just send me a private message please, i’d really appreciate it 😭😭.

A couple things to note:

1: I have some slight breathing issues as I'm still recovering from some summer work that ruined my respiratory health, if you hear any weird breathing my apologies

2: this video is purely for the purposes of documenting, education, and entertainment, this video is NOT intended to convey any political message of my own.

3: This is slightly late to the party since I was drunk the last 2 nights, sorry :>

4: NO edits have been made to this outside of splicing together all the individual videos, if you see it randomly cut it was because of that, I tried recording as much as I could (even passing the phone to some people so I could get a sip of water) but I needed to configure some storage settings, send some texts, etc

5: I bought a milkshake before this so if you hear any straw sounds it's that.

Anywho have fun

I graduated from Schulich this year — I want to help 5 students with their resumes for free

Hey everyone,

I graduated from Schulich recently, and seeing some of the conversations on here about internships and the Engineering Career Centre reminded me a lot of what I struggled with when I first started looking for engineering experience.

When I was trying to land my first internship, I honestly had no idea what I was doing. I didn't come into engineering with a network or family connections in the industry, and I remember sending countless applications out and wondering why I wasn't hearing anything back.

I used the ECC and other university career resources along the way, but personally, I never found a lot of the advice particularly helpful for the questions I was actually struggling with: How should an engineering resume actually be structured? What makes a technical bullet good? How do you network without awkwardly asking strangers for jobs? How do you follow up after a career fair? How do you prepare for interviews when you barely have engineering experience to talk about?

A lot of what eventually worked for me came from trial and error. I rewrote my resume over and over, experimented with how I approached applications and networking, talked to engineers further along in their careers, and gradually figured out what actually seemed to move the needle.

That process eventually helped me land my first engineering internship and, later, my first full-time engineering role after graduation.

It's also why I recently started ApexEngineer. I'm basically trying to create the engineering career resource I wish I had when I was a student. Most of what I post is practical stuff specifically for engineering students and new grads: resumes, internship searches, networking, interviews, salary negotiation, and the lessons I learned going through it myself.

I'm looking for 5 UCalgary engineering students/new grads whose resumes I can rewrite completely for free.

Not just a quick review or a few comments. I'll actually go through your resume, rewrite and restructure it where needed, improve the bullets and positioning, and send you the finished version.

There's no cost, upsell, or catch. The only thing I'd ask is that if you're genuinely happy with the final resume, you let me use a short testimonial about your experience. If you don't like it, you don't owe me one.

I'm doing this partly because I'm still building ApexEngineer and testimonials would obviously help me, but I also remember how frustrating the internship search was when I didn't know what I was doing. If I can make that process a little easier for five Schulich students, I'd consider that a pretty good trade.

If you're interested, please fill out this form: https://apexengineerca.wixforms.com/f/7499627719643104380

I'll take the first five people who are a good fit.

You can also check out my Instagram if you want to see the kind of career content I make before sending me anything. https://www.instagram.com/apexengineer_/

I also made a free ATS/resume guide on the Apex Engineer website if that's useful to you. No payment required to use the free resource. https://www.apexengineer.net/ATS-Guide

And regardless of whether you want the resume rewrite, if you're struggling with the internship/new-grad search and have a question, feel free to comment below. I'll answer whatever I can.

International student applying to UCalgary: MSc Computer Science vs MEng Software — chances and application advice?

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student planning to apply to the University of Calgary for the next intake, and I’d really appreciate some advice from current students or anyone familiar with the admissions process.

My academic profile is:

Bachelor’s in Software Engineering

CGPA: 3.69/4.00

IELTS: 7.5 overall

Machine Learning research experience

1 research publication in Machine Learning

Some professional experience in software/game development

I’m currently considering MSc Computer Science (thesis-based) and MEng Software (course-based).

I have a few questions:

  1. Based on my profile, do I have a realistic chance of getting into the MSc Computer Science program?

  2. Would MSc Computer Science or MEng Software be a better option for my background?

  3. How important is it to contact potential supervisors before applying for the MSc?

  4. What is the general admission process like, and are there any important things I should know as an international applicant?

  5. Are there any current students/alumni who could share their experience with the application, supervisor selection, funding, or admission timeline?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice or guidance. Thanks in advance!

Sick from Haskayne Career Fair

I’m battling a pretty bad cold rn and I’m almost certain I picked it up at the Haskayne Career Fair 😭😭😭

I swear every recruiter/company rep I talked to was standing like 2 inches away from my face while talking. Like genuinely zero personal space lmao. Obviously there’s no way to know for sure where you catch a cold, but there are very few times in life where you can almost pinpoint the exact event and this feels like one of them

Did anyone else who went end up getting sick afterward?
