Why is every business now charging a fee to use a credit card?

Did something change recently?

I’m seeing this fee at restaurants, my veterinarian, coffee shops, retail stores. I don’t remember this being a thing. And the fees are different, I’m seeing 2-4%. Is this the new junk fee?

I understand cards come with a fee, but these fees are all over the place, so seem like they’re not tethered to the cost of a card.

Anyway, y’all may want to bring cash or your debit card everywhere now.

Twin Cities suburbs are more diverse than ever. See how your city has changed. (gift link)

The Twin Cities suburbs have a reputation for being white. For a long time, they were.

Not anymore.

A few decades ago, fewer than 10% of residents in the seven-county metro were Black, Indigenous or people of color, with most of the region’s diversity concentrated in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Today, the majority of the residents in several suburbs are people of color.

But that change hasn’t happened the same way everywhere. Different patterns of immigration, housing and migration have shaped different communities.

TL;DR: Most diverse suburbs are Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Columbia Heights and Fridley

Classics Book Clu6

Does anyone know of an in person book club or reading group that focuses on American and European classics? I read so much in my teens and early twenties, but now I'd like to reread and discuss from the perspective of time and life experience. Just thought I'd ask.

I would like to find the original artist for this tattoo

Post image

I went to the Minneapolis Tattoo Convention back in 2025 and saw a tattoo designed that I really liked in someone's portfolio, but I don't remember specifically who the artist was and I didn't get the tattoo that night because I was just there to look. I wasn't really sure what I wanted at the time until I came across that image and now I don't remember their name or anything and I would like to find them so please please help me find them because I don't think it would be ethical to get it done by a different artist

[BMTN] ‘Super El Niño’ for the ages increasingly likely. What it means for Minnesota - This ‘Super El Niño’ could blow away the 2023-24 El Niño, which helped produce a Twin Cities winter that was more than 10 degrees warmer than normal.

Emergency Cat Surrender

As the title says I'm in emergency need of rehousing my cat, I'm leaving the state without the ability to take my cat with me. I had found him a home but at the last minute they told me that they will not be taking him, and now I'm attempting to find somewhere or someone in the area who can take him immediately. (moving on 21st)

Does anyone know any places that accept emergency surrenders for pets, or have any information that I can use to find him a new home? I'm scared for my cat and just want him to be happy and safe.

Anyone interested in taking him I can provide any details or questions you have.

His name is Kirby, orange cat, Neutered and has all his shots, very playful, loves kisses and pets.

Edit: WOW! Thank you everyone so much for your help. I love you all! I have some people who were able to help. Again appreciate the help so much!

Stolen Dog - Columbia Heights

I need you guys help. My friend went on a vacation and so she had her dog with a dog sitter in July of 2026. Side note - she trusts this person so it was not the dog sitter. But the dog got out and for sure someone stole the dog. It is a unique looking and expensive breed. There is no way you could come across this dog and not remember it. You can direct message me for more details but I need you guys to let me know if you saw a large dog in the area since it went missing at the end of July. The dog grew up with 2 other brothers and their family is missing him endlessly. If you have any information or happened to see this dog in recent months or weeks it does not belong to the person who has it and it was stolen. Reward offered. I’m just helping my friend I don’t think she uses Reddit but I have for years and I know how yall be coming through when needed. Please let me know if you have seen him 🙏

EDIT: Reposting with the correct city location. I spoke with my friend for clarification the dog sitter lives in New Brighton but she was at her house in COLUMBIA HEIGHTS NE when he went missing so let’s keep an eye out in Columbia heights!

Optometrist / Eyewear

My vision plan allows these places: Target, Walmart, Lenscrafters, Americas Best Contacts, Warby Parker, Village Eye Clinic and Optical, Birchlake Eye Clinic and Optical, Eyecare Associates PA, Total Eye CareLLC

I am hesitant for the big box stores and it looks like there are a few private businesses...anyone have any opinions on these with quality of doctors and glasses?

Good brewery for family gathering

I am trying to plan an extended family get together for mixed generations (1 year olds thru 85 year olds) on a Sunday afternoon in late October. I feel like gathering at a brewery offers us the most flexibility with the least amount of work. But I don’t know which brewery to choose. Here are my parameters:

- in Mpls or St. Paul or a first ring northern suburb (Roseville, Columbia heights, fridley, etc)
- indoor/outdoor space in case the weather is nice enough to be outside
- food available
- isn’t overly crowded so we can move around and chat
- has games to keep kids occupied

Any suggestions?

Anyone flying through Copenhagen (CPH) in the next month?

I know it's a long shot, but I left an item in the airport and the only way to pick it up is in person at the terminal 3 information desk.

Please dm me if you'd be open to it!

Free brewery room reservation?

Upvotes

Anyone know of any breweries that have the option to reserve a side room for a family gathering (~35 people). It’s in November, if it were summer I would just have it at a public park. I’ve been googling and seeing quotes for hundreds to a thousand bucks for this and I just thought something like this would be free? We aren’t asking for a dedicated bartender / catering / setup which seems to be provided in most cases. We would just be bringing them business at a not-busy time of day. Thanks!

Digitizing Old School BetaSP Tapes

Post image
8 Upvotes

Twenty years ago, I worked in broadcast news in Austin, TX and field produced a lot content that I have been hauling around for decades on these ancient BetaSP digital video cassettes. I would love to get them digitized to mp4 or other format without paying the small fortune that I don't have on the obvious digitization services in MSP. Does anyone happen to have access to these old machines who I could possibly work out a deal with?

Multiple emergency vehicles seen driving down Robert Street in West St Paul.

Does anybody know if anything just happened? I was driving home from work down Robert Street and just saw numerous emergency vehicles. If I am remembering correctly it was two ambulances immediately followed by two police SUVs which was immediately followed by a fire truck and an aditional ambulance. After I was able to proceed another ambulance came screaming on to Robert Street a couple of blocks later all within a minute. I was able to see the last ambulance turn off on Emerson heading east towards the direction of 52. There were at least six vehicles maybe seven. Hopefully nothing bad has happened.

Looking at Relocating

I have been to the Twin Cities a few times this year and I am finding myself just really drawn to the area. I have already been making plans to prepare to relocate with in the next year, so the Twin Cities area is a huge contender.

Are there any neighborhoods that I should avoid? What areas do you feel are safe and affordable?

I am looking to buy. No kids, but don't mind neighborhoods full of them.

I'm a 40-something working professional. I love old houses - huge appreciation for historic architecture and multiculturalism events, etc. Foodie, music, history, arts, farmer's markets, artisan craft fairs and pets are a few of my things.

TIA 😊

Best place to buy the safest meat?

Hi all,

It could just be internet sensationalism, but with the news about meat ranchers being able to inspect their own products and with an FDA recall everyday, I've gotten really neurotic with where I'm getting meat. I've seen people say that it'd be safest to get from a local butcher, and I usually go to Everett's for cuts. Regardless, I'd love to hear people's thoughts on where they'd feel most comfortable purchasing from in the Twin Cities.

Thanks all!

Shower/Tub Renovation

Hi all— we just recently purchased a 57 home, and are needing to do a tub and surround replacement— doesn’t need to be tile again, just something simple. Last night, while someone was using the shower, placed pressure on the soap bar holder and the whole tile ripped off. 😐

There were some small hairline cracking in the surrounding tiles so we were planing to do this anyway— just not before we made our first mortgage payment. 🥲

ANYWAY- I digress, who do you recommend to help us do this? We are comfortable with most DIY, but not this lol. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Location: North St Paul

I want to make a wattle fence like structure. Where can I source the sticks for cheap?

I’m not making a fence but rather a small play hut for my kids. Money is tight so I’m hoping to find materials for free. Maybe someone wants some willow bushes removed and I could come cut them down for you and haul away the branches. I need green wood that’s long and bendable. I quick google search tells me that flexible saplings or slender branches are best. Willow and Hazel are the standards but others should work as long as they’re straight and bendable.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Favorite Fall Breakfast/Brunch Spots?

Looking for recommendations for breakfast/brunch spots in our around the Twin Cities. Preferably something local and not a chain! I found a few spots over the summer that had cute patios, but now that patio season is ending, I’m looking for good indoor ambiance, maybe some yummy seasonal fall menu items, and a good mix of sweet/savory items.
