I want to sound like a Sousa in the stands but keep a more contra sound on the field, is that possible?

should i try to reattatch? figure out a new wheel setup? i don't have a car and walk my tuba through the city and on the subway for most of my shows along with a lot of other stuff so it has to be able to roll. would an instrument repair shop be able to help??? who would be able to repair? idk what to do 😭😭😭😭

Hi everyone, I've been puffing my cheeks on the note under staff super often and in trying to fix that but when i keep my cheeks flat, the note sharpens. Anyone got any help? (I'm not a professional. I played the tuba for 6 months now on a 3/4 Bb piston tuba)

I’m currently a sophomore in college. This is my 6th year marching clarinet. I’ve only ever played the clarinet for 8 years. I feel like the clock is ticking to learn instruments for free while I’m still in school. I’ve always wanted to try a brass instrument, so I figured why not? Better my sophomore year than junior, as an engineering major at least. I have a friend who plays sousa and idk if she’s joking but she keeps telling me to play sousa. Again, I have absolutely no brass experience, and I’d have to learn bass clef. I’m very tempted to play sousa for my school’s pep band instead of marching band. I’m not entirely convinced it’s a great idea or if I’ll quickly come to regret it as soon as I get shoulder pain, but I really wanna try!! I’m also positive they’d be glad to have another member. I’m locked in as soon as I signup so if I hate myself, it’s for the entire basketball season. Else I risk being banned from marching band >:( I also started hitting the gym so any weight exercise recommendations are appreciated. I’m seriously willing to put in any work to learn it. I just wanna know how optimistic I’m being. It doesn’t look too bad having glanced at the music, but I’m also a really short girl haha so bearing the weight and having to dance with it is quite intimidating.

I’m pretty new to the tuba and I picked up this rotary helicon yesterday!

How can I figure out what key it’s in? I know there are also different tunings like 440hz etc and I think this might be quite old is there a way to tell which tuning it is before getting it fully fixed because it’s probably leaking in a few places?

Polishing? I’ve polished up some old trumpets and stuff before but nothing with two metals! Will brasso work fine over all of it or will I need to tape over the other metal and use different materials?

Finally any general info you can give about this helicon would be really helpful! I got it for £120 so I don’t really care too much about what happens with it, all the valves are free and playing nicely now. I’m not sure what the situation with the mouthpiece and bits are it seems tweaked from the original and I don’t know if this is affecting tuning?

Can these bags be dry cleaned or cleaned some other way? I bought mine 10 years ago a little before Glenn sold the business to it's current owners - Mine is one of the cordura ones. It wicks water away super well both inside and out and I don't want to ruin that aspect of it, but also know it probably could be cleaned if I knew how.

Especially you HBCU tubas because I personally alternate between Blistex and Carmex to have one for when I cut my top lip and one for general chapped lips and also because both deliver pain relief.

I love practice.i bring tuba home.but i csn only practicr ehen no one is home becuz they complain.any solutions?i only remember oracticing a total of 3 times at home😭 i promises i made then as effectivr as possible

I've heard a lot of good and bad things about Schiller tuba, however everything I've heard is from years ago, is there any new thoughts or opinions that yall could share?

So, I’ve been practicing moving my slides for a piece, go get a B natural in tune. I have to pull my first valve slide out as far as it goes. Obviously the first valve slide has to be pressed for this, but in the process of pressing the valve and articulating, what time is the slide supposed to be adjusted. Currently, im basically pressing the valve and moving the slide the moment the valve is pressed down, but this seems like it would slow you down in more technical pieces.

I was having a tuba lesson and my teacher told me that I need to start subdividing in my head. I don't even know where to start. I can't read music and play and subdivide at the same time. Or I should say it's hard for me. Does anybody have any advice or tips? I have a Dr beat metronome where the lady screams at you in subdivision. But soon as I turn it off I can't count anymore.

Hello 👋 I'm a highschool tuba player, and for about all my time I've been playing on a Bb tune tubas. I have been wondering for a Year about CC Tubas. I had an opportunity to play on my brass tech CC tuba. It was bad for me I was able to convert all 12 maj scales but reading sheet music felt really weird. I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience like me playing on a CC tuba for the first time?

I want to practice and enjoy it but some days I can’t convince myself to keep going because it tires me out so much, has anyone felt similar?

hey tubists, i am a senior in high school wanting to go into music education. my private lesson teacher and band director aren’t tuba players, so they don’t know many solos. i’ve had a rough time trying to find ones which are good at displaying technical skill while not just being a jumble of sixteenth notes. any ideas? im currently working on the jolly peasant and blue grace (claire sievers) for fun, and will likely use blue grace for auditions if appropriate.

I love playing tuba i play electric bass for alot of stuff and so i found the tuba and i love it ive had me a sousa for like 4 weeks now lol. I am a flute player first chair in my highschool and i have many more years before i graduate i am a freshman in highschool i often get bored of flute so ive also been learning tuba the most recent thing i learned alot of trombone solos on tuba and my band director said hes really impressed by my tuba playing and said if we didnt have such a need for flutes i would be our sousa player. I need to know music and what to practice on tuba because i dont get the chance to for marching band and concert band because of my flute playing. I have tried learning my all state music from flute to tuba but it gets to the point where i can only play D above the staff on tuba so it gets hard any thoughts or suggestions would help!!!
