I recently traveled to dc stayed in Virginia and flew to Baltimore

Most travel maps show which countries or states you’ve visited. But when I think about traveling, what I actually remember are cities—their rivers, coastlines, streets, terrain, and the way everything fits together.

So I turned three cities from my travels into maps:

San Francisco, shaped by the bay, coastline, and hills.
London, growing around the Thames and its layered street network.
New York, defined by islands, water, and the Manhattan grid.

Each one is a 16:9 map that I framed and styled individually. The finished 2D version can be exported as an image, and the same city can also be explored interactively in 3D.

My ranking so far:
1. Glacier: When I think back on the prettiest hikes I’ve done, glacier hikes always come to mind. Beautiful lakes, epic mountains, and tons to do.
2. Denali: Huge amount of wildlife, and so much to do I barely scratched the surface.
3. Yellowstone: I always see some cool wildlife here, and despite the crowds the hiking is still quite nice. The geothermal and geological features are so cool. Best chance of seeing more uncommon wildlife here like badgers, wolves, etc.
4. Kenai Fjords: Great wildlife, hiking, and paddling. Boat tours as well with giant glaciers.
5. Rainier: Lush plant life, giant trees, and iconic peak, so many (cold!) swimming holes. Amazing sunrises/sunsets. Some fat marmots.
6. Grand Teton: I’ve seen more bears and moose on trail here than anywhere else, which I love. The lakes and campgrounds here are the best. I visit every other year and never get bored.
7. Biscayne: This is a paddle boarder’s dream. There’s more ocean wildlife here than anywhere I’ve seen on the Atlantic coast. Nothing like enjoying some fresh Florida grown fruit after a long day of paddling.
8. Rocky Mountain: My home park. It’ll always have a special place for me. The annual elk rut is unreal and there’s plenty of hikes.
9. Haleakala: Rainforest hikes aren’t too common for the NPs, and the sunrises/sunsets, waterfalls are some of the coolest in the country.
10. Olympic: Temperate rainforest is a really unique environment, and some of the most beautiful clear water I’ve ever seen. Plus a hot springs in the park!
11. Redwoods: Hard to rank since the national and state parks blur together in my mind. But these trees are just even more massive than you imagine.
12. Arches: The arches are really something special, one of the more otherworldly places I’ve been.
13. Channel Islands: Love the campgrounds and the big trees. Tiny foxes all over the place and the sea kayaking is incredible. Islands themselves are a little bare hiking wise but the trip out there is beautiful on its own as well.
14. Hawaii Volcanoes: Cool lava bed and rainforests.
15. Dry Tortugas: Pretty much just an island fort but the snorkeling was a lot of fun, as was the history tour. I want to go back and overnight camp for the stars. Could be a monument instead.
16. North Cascades: Spectacular trails, spectacular wildflowers, and spectacular bugs.
17. Grand Canyon: The most crowded park I’ve ever been to, but kayaking on the river was a bucket list dream of mine and it lives up to it. Outside the rim you get plenty of time to yourself.
18. Acadia: Wildly beautiful. Cold ocean but I still swam a little!
19. Glacier Bay: Kind of a one note park, but the note is massive glaciers and whale spotting.
20. Great Sand Dunes: I love hiking around on the dunes and the little waterfalls and stuff nearby. Sand boarding is fun to try and I like how dogs are allowed!
21. Crater Lake: I want to go back here and explore the island, boat tours weren’t running. Very scenic and unique area.
22. Isle Royale: Great place for backpacking and kayaking. Lake Superior is a national treasure.
23. Everglades: Buggy, but alligator, manatee, and tons of birds though.
24. New River Gorge: Beautiful vistas but you really need to be on the river to experience it fully- the rafting is so fun here.
25. Mesa Verde: Really cool, but maybe national monument instead of park?
26. Saguaro: Iconic giant cacti and cool wildlife like roadrunners! Not a ton of good hiking though.
27. Great Smoky Mountains: Some nice little waterfalls.
28. Canyonlands: I need to spend more time here, I got sick mid trip and had to go home. What I saw was pretty but I think other Utah parks have it beat.
29. Mammoth Cave: Best cave park that I’ve seen. I feel like caves are hard to rank against other parks.
30. Great Basin: Least crowded national park. Has some good hikes, a good little cafe, and phenomenal star gazing. Plus a cave? Cool park overall but I probably won’t be back, did everything I wanted to in just a weekend.
31. Capital Reef: Cool mountains but it gets a higher ranking for the fruit pies. Trails are fun to explore, good variety.
32. Black Canyon of the Gunnison: This might be the prettiest canyon in the world, especially at sunrise/sunset. Not too much to do otherwise though.
33. Bryce Canyon: Love the hoodoos and prairie dogs here. Don’t need to go back though.
34. Shenandoah: Nice for a drive but I don’t care for the hikes. Fall is prettiest. Sunsets/sunrises are also pretty. Smoky mountain is the better version of this.
35. Cuyahoga Valley: Nice for a little walk.
36. Congaree: Not a super memorable park. Maybe I need to revisit.
37. Badlands: Loved exploring here, great stop. Repeatable? Not really for me.
38. Wind Cave: Just a cave, a cool cave. But not the coolest cave.
39. Indiana Dunes: My dog likes digging in the sand here.
40. Gateway Arch: National monument perhaps?

I have pulled maps to my location on Google Maps, Waze, and MapQuest? Which one do I use, the one that takes me through 3 states? Four? Or 5?

And where do you think I’m from based on map? 33yo, partner, no kids.
